Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +45 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
The Mountain Hardwear Phantom 45 is a solid 3-season lightweight bag that performs above expectations. I've put this bag through a lot in the past few months taking it down to about 35 degrees and up over 80. I've used it in tents, bivy sacks and on its own. It compresses down very well, is extremely well made, and if you are willing to supplement its loft, versatile well beyond its temperature range.
The most appealing thing about this bag is its range. I have yet to use this bag in conditions where I needed to zip it fully and cinch hood down around my face. I've used this bag a few nights down to 35 degrees paired with a bivy (adds between 5-10 degrees of insulation), a lightweight foam pad (R value just over 2.0) and was more than comfortable. I am very confident that with such a setup I could have handled a drop of 10-15 degrees or so without adding more insulation, by fully cinching the hood and closing the zipper. On the other end of the spectrum I've used the bag on very warm nights as a super comfortable quilt.
CONS:
- Zipper snag in a sleeping bag has never bothered me before. The zipper on this bad boy snags all the time and it is getting kind of annoying. The bag is outstanding otherwise, so I put up with it.
- Possibly a bit too roomy in the lower half or third of the bag. Not a big deal, and makes the bag more comfortable, but could be a bit more trim (I'm 5'11 with bulky shoulders) for heat retention and weight reduction.
- The stuff sack could be slightly improved. It has two compression cinches. While using the second gives you another inch or so of compression, the bag compresses down so small to begin with, I'm not sure it is worth the added complexity and weight (which arguably is minimal).
PROS:
- Weight to performance ratio is exceptional. As advertised, this bag is very lightweight, and based on my experience, performs well beyond its stated temperature rating (45 degree bag based on the product name; 32 degree for men based on the EN rating). I know there are other bags (and quilts) from cottage companies that are probably on par, or perhaps better, but I couldn't find any that cost the same or cheaper, and often the price premium was very high. The weight of my bag inside the included stuff sack is 526g. The specified weight is 480g (maybe without the stuff sack?). While 526g is definitely heavier than other bags in the 45-degree category I don't believe they are comparable given the Phantom 45's performance. In short, I would rate this more accurately as a 30-35 degree bag, meaning that with minimal clothing insulation (socks, lightweight thermals, and possibly a very thin hat), a proper pad (an R-value of at least 2.0), and proper usage of the bag (fully zipped and hood cinched to trap and retain body heat), an adult male would sleep very comfortably. That to me also means that a drop of another 10-15 degrees would be bearable for me before adding additional insulating layers (e.g. a down jacket, which I would be carrying anyway in those temps) which could really stretch this bag's range.
- Compressibility: The quality of the down is very evident when you compress this bag. It gets very small and compact.
- Temperature range: Already belabored enough above but worth restating. This is a very, very, very solid 45-degree bag. Based on my experience with the bag I consider it usable (with proper preparation and supplemented loft where necessary) for backcountry use from 25 to 80+ degrees.
- Quality: Save the zipper snag (mentioned above), everything about this bag from the quality of the down to the construction, to the shell materials, is very high quality.
This is an excellent bag and well worth the investment!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +45 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
So... I was pretty disapointed by this. Its underfilled, leaks down everywhere and it has bald spots right out of the box. This is a great idea and could be very good with some tailoring improvments to keep the down where it belongs and if it had a few more ounces of fill. This thing is NOT worth the money you pay for it. I was able to sleep with it for a week before I decided that I would return it. Lucky for me REI took it back with no problem. I would look at the MH Lamina +35. Its slightly bigger and only a few ounces heavier.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +45 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
This is a very durable sleeping bag. However, at 6'3", and shy of 245lbs, it definitely could use a couple extra inches around the shoulders.
I just completed a week long hunt at the end of Aug 2011 in Chicken, AK. Temps at the top of the mountain dropped to the low 30's every night. Even with some heavy thermal underwear on, there wasn't a night I didn't wake up a little bit chilly. It definitely had a couple of spots that felt a little colder inside of the bag than other.
The only other down side to this bag is that the zipper snags ALL the time, unless you stretch out the bag to keep the zipper tight. This sucks, especially when you want to get to get out of the bag when you feel a little claustrophobic.
The bag does great in temps above 45, but I wouldn't recommend it when you are on top of a mountain below 45.
