Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

I am 5 ft. 5 in; 135 #, and this is a great pack for me. My husband and I lean toward 3-4 day backpacking trips. Fortunately for me, he carries the tent, so I can't comment on the impact of items strapped outside the pack. I have plenty of room for sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow, clothes, part of our cookware and food. The front zip panel makes packing and removal of items very convenient. Extra zippered areas provide space for items that can get lost in the pack. Wish the pockets for water bottles were more accessible; although I have found the pockets on most packs to be too far back to reach comfortably when the pack is on. I would buy this pack again.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

I'm a smaller person (5'2") so this pack was a little too big for me. The front pouch throws the weight off in a funny way, so I didn't use it most of the time. It is nice that you can access the inside from the top and the front flap. Even for a RTW trip, I think this bag just has too much space. I think the Ridgeline is a better choice for someone of my size.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

I am an avid outdoors woman, spending...on average...two and a half weeks per month from May-Oct sleeping in the backcountry. I own an Osprey Xenos 85 (I need to carry considerable gear) and a Gregory Deva which I use for daytrips or quick overnights. My Osprey is failing and after a miserable 5 day pleasure backpack with the metal stays digging in my hips and backside (requiring me to hike with my hands under the bottom of the pack to relieve the pressure) I decided I had had enough and drove straght to REI looking for another pack. I stumbled upon the Venus and after the empty, heavy weight of the Osprey and Gregory the Venus felt light as a feather! I bought the pack, loaded it up with my gear in the car and headed out for a summit bid on Mt Adams...we both made it, I am happy to report. This pack carried all of my gear without so much as a squeak. It had pouches in places where I had long wished my other packs had, I am however, still getting used to the clips and zippers. I thought the nail polish idea a previous reviewer gave is brillant! The pack is light and airy and a pleasure to carry. I would recommend this pack to anyone who must carry an above average load.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

Love, love, love it! Prior to buying and using the rei Venus pack, I bought the Gregory Deva, which sat in my room for a good three months and wasn't used once. Because the Deva was so expensive, I was hesitant to take it out and get it dirty; I wanted to be sure it was the right pack for me...turns out it wasn't. My average sized sleeping bag wouldn't fit in the darn sleeping bag compartment! I chose to exchange it and get the rei Venus. Unlike the Deva, this pack is accessible and and holds a ton. The top and front load pockets make loading a cinch! Everything is in one place. Though the green color is not my fav, the material, as well as the zippers, are durable and strong. The slim profile is great for off trails and it fits me perfect (5'6", 125lb.) The only downside to this pack is it doesn't have very many exterior pockets; but then again, organization is what stuff sacks are for. The top compartment and the front pocket offer enough room for the essentials--maps, compass, flashlight, snacks. I have only taken the pack on 3 day hiking trips thus far, but have also used it for much longer traveling trips. This bag held everything I needed for a two week trip to Chicago--dress clothes, casual clothes, everything else--it all fit (and it also survived the rough and bumpy trip on the MegaBus)! This is a great pack at an economical price!

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

Love this pack. Went on a hike in the Grand Canyon for 4 days 3 nights. The pack did very well. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because of the sleeping bag area. You can not use the divider with a 3 liter bladder. So I did not use the divider and it worked out fine. Otherwise it's a very good pack. Can't wait to go on more hikes.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

It isn't the lightest pack out there, but it's comfortable and sturdy. I wore this for five months of extended backpacking trips for my job in the Sierra Nevadas and it held up wonderfully. I'm a fairly small woman (5'3", 125 lbs) and was carrying a lot of weight, and this pack fit perfectly. My only wish had been for a zippered compartment on the bottom for easy access.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

I am 5' 3", and this 5-lb. pack is too big and heavy for me. But I used it anyway for a 400+ km walk through northern Spain (Camino de Santiago). I bought this pack because it's adjustable, durable, and easy to pack and access gear--and equally easy to overload because it swallows gear without even a belch. Before you buy a 5-lb. backpack, consider: How much will your gear weigh, and how much total weight do you want to carry?

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

I rented this pack from REI in Seattle for a 3 night/4 day trip from Pauls Peak Trailhead to Golden Lakes (Mt Rainier). I loaded it up with extras, and it carried the weight well -- 4 miles of steady down and 6 miles of steady up. My friends had lighter packs and were worried about the 5.6 lbs of pack itself, but I thought it was comfortable. Because it has lots of adjustments I could keep the heat off my back (80-90 degree weather!). Lots of space, pockets for stuff, loops to hang things from. Plus the rental staff were happy with the durability of the pack (improvements over previous years version of the Venus). I'm not skinny -- the hip belt fit comfortably around my waist/hips and didn't dig in. I plan to purchase this pack.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

Just finished a 4-day backpacking trip in the Bighorns of Wyoming. The pack carried heavy loads easily and my lower back pain did NOT exist once during the trip! I am long-waisted and was worried that it wasn't going to be adjustable enough, but the 19 inches seemed to do the trick. I'm 5'8" and slender so wanted to have a women's pack for the padding, hipbelt sizing, and shoulderstrap sizing and not get a men's pack in order to accomodate the length of my back.
We encontered light rain only on the hike out so I didn't have a chance to test the pack in a lot of rain but the contents of my seemed to stay mostly dry. (Stuff not in plastic or coated stuffsacks.) I wish it had a slightly larger case on the hip belt--it almost fit my camera but was tight. But really, I have no complaints about this pack.

                Service and delivery comments:

Incredibly fast delivery--I live in the boonies and it usually takes longer for me to get stuff.

Comments about REI Venus 70 Pack - Women's:

I haven't tested this on a hike yet, which is why I only gave it 4 stars, but so far I love it. It is very comfortable and you can barely feel the weight. I'm going to have to be careful not to overload it. It easily fits my sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent, and a bear canister.
I like that there is a separate sleeve for the water. All the pockets are huge and have the waterproof zippers. The front stretchy pocket could maybe be bigger but will work great for a rainfly, I plan on using it to carry my DSLR camera. The hip pocket is nice and roomy; however, it is mesh and I wish both sides were pockets.
The material seems very waterproof and durable. I like that the buckles are reinforced and aren't just cheap plastic.
The removable top is nice. There are two roomy pockets with zippers not Velcro like most bags. I will probably more straps so I can use it as a day pack.
My only complaint is that the sleeping bag compartment isn't removable but since the u shaped zipper starts at the top it seems very easy to remove the sleeping bag. My other minor issue is that there are lots of straps and buckles. I decided to paint them with nail polish so I could more quickly identify where they all went.
I really like the color but I could see people wanting more options.
