With a touch of BMX style, the Marin MBX 50 16 in. kids' bike is great for young riders honing their skills, and features a suspension fork and adjustable training wheels.

    • 6061 aluminum frame features hydroformed top and down tubes for excellent strength without added weight; young riders can wheel the bike around and put it away easily
    • Suspension front fork—just like on bigger bikes—features 40mm of travel to soften minor bumps that get in the way
    • Single-speed bike features a coaster (foot) brake and rear hand brake, so a young rider is never without a way to stop
    • Features a BMX-style handlebar
    • Chainguard helps prevent clothing and shoelaces from getting caught in the drivetrain
    • Adjustable training wheels speed the learning process

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. All bicycles sold at REI include a free warranty tune-up. New bikes go through a normal break-in period, after which readjustment is important for longevity and performance. Bring your new bike in to your local REI for its free tune-up within 20 hours of use or 6 months from purchase, whichever comes first. Contact your nearest REI bike shop to schedule this important service.

Comments about Marin MBX 50 16'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

We bought this bike for our 3-year-old after a long search. Most kids bikes are poorly made and still cost around $150, so we thought we'd splurge on this one so that it would be in good shape for our second son to ride. Big disappointment. The bike really isn't different in quality from cheaper ones that you can get at big box stores - the pedals are thin, the seat tears easily, the brakes broke almost immediately, the brake handles cracked off after a few crashes, etc. Also, you cannot adjust the seat without tools, which is annoying.

Kids at this age crash constantly and lay their bikes down roughly. It would be so nice to have a bike that could stand up to that. Unfortunately this isn't the one.

One other comment about the customer service. We've been REI members for a long time and buy from REI specifically because we know we will be taken care of. With this bike, it's been nothing but problems and every time we've brought it in to get fixed, we've been nickled and dimed. Three weeks after we bought it, a brake pad broke off. This is unacceptable and should be replaced for free no problem. REI finally did, but not until we went back and forth with them for awhile.

We just took the bike in because an entire pedal broke off. We had to pay $26 to get new pedals, which, by the way, are REALLY high quality. Why couldn't these pedals have been affixed on the bike in the first place? Cheap. Made in China. Better off just getting a cheap, cheap bike.

Comments about Marin MBX 50 16'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

Got the bike for our four year old. [...] Once home our boy jumped on board and took off around the house and driveway. He can easily start from a stop, bike seems very taunt and easy to handle. Will certainly out last the boy, and our little girl doesnt know it yet but her first bike is going to be blue Searched bikes online, read many complaints about ordering bikes from a major store. [...] Was made very clear that for the bike to last, and be proper once all put together from the get-go purchasing from a bike shop is the only way to go (no dramas)
