Comments about REI Classic Duffel Bag - XX Large:
This is my third duffel (2 XXL, 1 XXXL). I bought two the first time for my daughter for out-of-state college. So that means it endured airport travel. Loved it so much that I picked up another one for my other child. The best duffels ever!!!

Comments about REI Classic Duffel Bag - XX Large:
Bought this while vacationing in CA (live in Europe) as we seem to have a chronic problem every time we travel to the US - we come home with at least one extra bag. This time we were there for 5 weeks and it was looking like we were going to need two extra bags, so we went to REI to get something that hopefully would not explode in transit. Had on a previous trip bought the North Face duffel, I think the large, (which we also had with us), and intended to get another of those, but got the REI duffel instead.
This thing is great for what it is, which is an old-school capacious duffel bag that is lightweight and packs small, and it is GENIUS that you can pack it into the included "toiletries case". The TNF duffel would probably be ok if you dropped it on a landmine, and that's not the case with this one, but if you're going on some trans-Himalayan pilgrimage you are not going to do it with an REI duffel, I hope. We're two parents with a teething baby and a mountain of STUFF that we needed to get back to Europe, plenty of adventure for us. We stuffed the bag to the gills (we are already referring to it as "the body bag") and it showed up in pristine condition. Its size did not trigger airline outrage, but we did have to think about what we put in it to keep the weight at the limit because it is just so huge.
I agree with the previous reviewer that it would be a nice touch with some compression straps across the zipper, especially in the large sizes. Obviously having used it once so far I can't really speak the durability of the zipper or straps, but the checkout dude promised me that it was totally guaranteed for life, and we had no trouble with it popping or breaking in spite of being mashed into a rental car, lugged through airports, and presumably tossed and kicked by airport guys (SFO-Frankfurt-Copenhagen).
Given its packability, this will be no problem to wedge in somewhere on future trips and we'll always have an extra (huge) bag with us. At this price it's the perfect bag for our needs.

I bought this bag to store and tranport a Tributary Sawtooth inflatable kayak. It is just big enough around to accommodate the rolled up IK, with room for seats, pump, and a throwbag on the end. Works great for keeping everything in one place in the garage, and makes it easy to grab and go to get out on the water.
So far so good on durability, but we'll see how it holds up. A pair of compression straps across the zipper would be great additions to make sure the zipper doesn't blow out and to decrease the overall bulk when loaded.

Bought this to store my backpacking gear in on a flight, and it worked great! Fit my pack, sleeping bag, tent, pad, poles, boots, and a few more things in it. It held up great through all the baggage handling. Stowes nice and small in the included pouch. Now we use it for filling with tons of clothes on family road trips, and it's great for that, too.

Comments about REI Classic Duffel Bag - XX Large:
For the money, this is a pretty solid duffel. The cloth weight is not completely bomber, so you can't outright abuse this guy, but it gets the job done and doesn't add a lot of weight. I've used it on several car-camping trips and a couple of times as checked baggage on planes, carrying camping and bike gear. It has not yet incurred an oversize-baggage fee, although by my math it is technically 2" larger than the 62" airline standard.
Due to the size and packability, it is floppy unless filled with very rigid stuff. The four grab handles and neck strap, used in combination, make it manageable but i'd hate to lug this thing any more than a couple hundred feet. However i *love* that it packs into the little bag. This makes it easy to store in the bottom of a pack once you reach your destination, where you forget about it until you have to re-pack your stuff to head home.
One caveat: I enjoy folding things, and i can get this back into the bag, nice and flat, without much trouble. If you do it right, it's not a big deal, but otherwise can be a pain. If there were some handy folding instructions printed on the inside lid of the storage sack, that would be really nice!

Comments about REI Classic Duffel Bag - XX Large:
Bought this bag to protect my backpacking gear while in transit to the west coast. While the bag fit all of my backpacking gear after the first trip to and from the west coast it has holes. Apparently the fabric is not durable enough to withstand the normal wear and tear of airline travel. These holes appeared even though their was no signs of excessive abuse. Thus its a great bag if you are traveling by train or car but I would not recommend it for air travel.
