Comments about Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Jacket - Men's:
I bought this 1 month ago. Since it is almost spring time I wear it everyday and I could say this jacket has the best price/quality ratio among the competitors.
This is multi-functional very versatile jacket. I use it for:
- running
- casual (very comfy)
- travel
- hiking
Just keep in mind that this is lightweight, water/wind proof shell and there is no warmth quality at all. EXTREMELY stretchable, extremely durable and spot resistant material.
I had a trip to Germany and it was on/with me all the times and when I came back to USA it looked like brand new.
Because it is HIGHLY breathable I didn't feel any sweating while changing between indoor/outdoor (which is the case when you travel - airports, buses, trains.. etc.).
It could be used 4 seasons if you use it with mid and base layer.
If you do not want to sacrifice from breathability point of view this is the right jacket for you.
If you need extreme wind/water resistance for heavy weather conditions you might consider different model. This jacket has VERY GOOD wind/water resistance, just I think it is not intended for severe weather conditions.
I think this is the best lightweight, HIGHLY breathable, durable all purposes jacket, on a very reasonable price. (actually the cheapest one among the competitors in the same category)

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Jacket - Men's:
No doubt, this is a nice jacket. I've always been a fan of Mtn. Hardwear gear. In the Offwidth, they've created a nice, mildly performing, casual jacket. I was looking for a new spring coat and wanted something that was a little different, lightweight, and mildly water-resistant. This one fit the bill. I didn't want a rain coat! Good thing too, because the Offwidth sheds a light rain well, but in a downpour, you'll get soaked. I wore it this weekend in 40 degrees F, with 20 MPH winds, and I found the wind cut through it more than I anticipated. With a fleece vest or sweater underneath though, you'll be comfortable. Overall, a very nice jacket. Just don't expect to go out on an extended hike in cold, wet weather with it.
Service and delivery comments:
REI's service is always terrific. They held the jacket for me for a few days while I decided if it was the right fit for me, and read up on some reviews online.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Jacket - Men's:
"Offwidth" is a technical climbing term, and although I'm not a climber I would think that the material in this jacket would certainly hold up to being scraped along quite a lot of granite. It's got a bit of four-way stretch to it as well which I expect will ultimately add to its durability. Despite regular hard use it still looks absolutely brand new.
I bought this as an outer layer during cold weather hiking, backpacking and Jeep excursions into the Rockies. I was NOT looking for true water repellency, and this jacket doesn't provide that. However, it does well in light rains, very well with snow, and is a great wind-stopper.
The zipper zips all the way up the neck, which brings the collar up high and against your neck forming a very effective seal against the wind (add a poly-pro balaclava and you're done). The collar is lined with a soft fleece, which feels good against your skin, although it is a bit 'scratchy' against that first day's growth of beard sometimes.
Two drawcords at the waist allow for a wide range of adjustment for wind seal, and MH has also added a drawcord at the neck to further tighten the wind seal there if needed.
My only real complaint is that there are too few pockets. This jacket has a cell phone pocket at the left breast with a pass-thru opening to the inside for an earpiece or headphones, and there are two large zip-close slash pockets left and right at the waist, but that's it.
MH did add a large inside pocket at front right of the jacket; it's a big 'pouch'-type pocket about 12" deep and about 6" wide. Useful, I suppose, for temporally stashing something lightweight like gloves and a watch cap maybe, as you duck inside a pub for a beer. But that particular pocket is really too flimsy and 'loose' for anything substantial and doesn't have any sort of zipper, Velcro or other closure. For you military folks out there it's large enough to hold an MRE.
For me the addition of four zip-close or Velcro pockets – two at the breast and two lower pockets across the front of the existing slash pockets would make this the perfect jacket… more of a 'cargo jacket' configuration I suppose.
It really looks great too, and I've taken to wearing this jacket often just out around town quite often. But a word of caution to the more fashion conscious out there… Mountain Hardware has placed their logo all over this jacket; on the left breast, on the left shoulder, on each wrist closure and even in the middle of the back just below the collar! This doesn't really bother me, but I suppose some would consider this a bit much. MH rocks and I don't mind advertising for them. Suffice to say that I am asked about this jacket all the time so it mustn't look too hokey!
Oh, a bit about sizing; I normally wear and XL in this type of jacket. However, this particular jacket does have a bit of an athletic, close fit, which did not fit my intended use as an outer layer garment. I was able to try on both the XL and the XXL in the store putting it on over a couple of different vests and 'down sweaters' and ultimately decided on the XXL. That makes the sleeves just a bit long on me (6'2", long arms) but not excessively so.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Jacket - Men's:
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose since I really like the placement of the logos on the wrist and other areas. What can I say, I love the "nut" logo.
This jacket is nice and stretchy and for me, makes for a good top layer over a fleece and Moreno wool base and a poly long sleeve tee shirt given it's adequate wind stopping capabilities.
Would I wear this in sub-zero weather? No. I would, and have, worn this jacket in the teens though (along with the above listed items and a wool hat) and was plenty warm.
No, it's not heavy enough to wear in cold weather but that's not what it's built for, or in my understanding marketed for. That being said, I would plan to wear two fleeces underneath and be perfectly comfortable taking this camping in very cold weather down to just above zero I suppose.
Great jacket, looks great, fits great and provides enough flexibility for cool to cold weather. Good buy (oh, and I get it for a great price on clearance :-) )
What the heck does "Offwidth" mean anyways? I'm looking for a humpback or something like that and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary about the fit.

I love it when someone reviews a coat, whose biggest virtue is that it stretches and breaths, and he says that not being waterproof or windproof is a Con.
This is a good coat, but its a basic, thin softshell, so it's only going to be good, if that is what you are after. It seems like every major brand makes one of these now. Mostly, you just pick out the one that fits you the best. This one fit me very well, so I accepted Mountain Hardwear's bad wrist cuffs and TACKY, UGLY logo.
It's a fine coat, though.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Jacket - Men's:
I love this jacket. Tried to steal my old man's from him last time I visited and got my own for Christmas as a result. Great outer layer for casual wear in moderate weather. If you layer under it, it's a very flexible jacket. It does a good job of dulling the wind, but I wouldn't quite call it windproof, same with water resistance. Plenty lightweight to toss in your pack even on a nice day as a "just in case" element.
Like the other review here, I hate the wrist straps. I think Mountain Hardwear were going for being stylish over function with these. They fit their intended purpose, but after a few months and a trip or two through the wash, the hook side of the velcro is causing the jacket material and especially the thread of the seam sewn around the wrist to fluff up and pill underneath the strap.
