Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
I was looking for a basic waterproof jacket for overnight backpacking in both 4-season temperate and desert California conditions, and am reviewing the 5 jackets I tried against that use.
This is a good intermediate level backpacking jacket. It is lightweight, and is waterproof, made of Gore-tex Paclite material, the lightest grade of Gore-tex. The manufacturer's website reveals they make a whole line of jackets at different price ranges, and this is not at all the most expensive and high-end. For a waterproof jacket, it is in line with norms for weight. In mountaineering circles, I have heard this jacket recommended as a first introductory jacket in part because it is Gore-Tex with pit zips that are well placed to ventilate out your sweat. The jacket has a pocket capable of holding a 1 liter-sized bottle, a feature oriented toward those performing overnight trips in freezing weather. The fit felt good, and the jacket felt durable, though I did have time to test durability. Drawbacks to this jacket and other jackets in this price range: The hood is not helmet adjustable and the side pockets are not harness friendly.
The chest pocket zipper is waterproofed. The main zipper is not waterproofed, but is protected by *two* semi-rigid flaps, with the other one held down by velcro. That should protect the front zipper in most real-life conditions, but it did not protect the front zipper when I performed a test in my home shower.
In my 10 minute home shower test with a fresh t-shirt underneath, my belly got 22% covered with water, my sides and back stayed dry.
Waterproofing weaknesses were: the front main zipper, at which my shower's water spray worked water around the double flap protector. That might not be the best indicator of real world effectiveness where you are. In a real shower, I probably would have stayed dry, but in horizontal rain, water probably would have come through the main zipper.
General comments after testing 5 rain jackets: I found you must spend at least $200 for a jacket that is truly waterproof. Even then, expect to be wet from your own sweat in a rainstorm no matter what breathability claims the manufacturer prints. Some experienced mountaineers have told me to just buy fleece and wool midlayers that will keep you warm when wet, because you can't avoid being wet in a lengthy rainstorm.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
The new 2010 version of this jacket has been dumbed down. The 2008-9 version had a much better fit. The new one makes it more of a city casual jacket than an outdoor adventure jacket. The fit is now wierd, baggy in the chest and tight elsewhere. Worst is pockets were lowered so they now ride at hip belt level, meaning you cannot use them with a pack.
Bad regression.
Now thw Typhoon pants are fantastic but the jacket is not worth it, there are better choices in the Paclite selection at this pricepoint.
The TNF Meru and OR Foray are better jackets for the climber, hiker, active outdoor person. I went with the Meru and have really been impressed with it. Check them out.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
I just got this jacket and really like it! A quick walk around the 'hood in a torrential downpour produced notion except being soaked from the waste down. The hood fit admirably, better than any other hood I've ever owned. I am a big guy (6'1", 255) and it's hard to find gear. With most brands, an XXL is just an XL with the seams let out a little (figuratively.) This thing is an HONEST XXL. Plenty of room to layer under this without it fitting like a tent. Beyond that, I was looking for a general outdoors parka and was balking at the price tags for some of the others. I note someone mentioned helmets, I was warned off some other well-regarded brands because they are sized for helmets and the hoods don't fit properly without all that volume inside them. This hood fits fine without a helmet. In fact, it's one of the best-fitting hoods I've ever used. I agree that the convenience/handwarmer pockets are too low, but then again this is not a technical parka per se. And when I'm wearing it with a pack, I'll just not use those pockets. My biggest beef is that the thing does not have a 2-way front zipper. But I can live with that and since the difference in price combined with the member discount was enough to get me into a BA Copper Spur 3, all I have to do is think about that tent anytime the lack of the 2-way zip annoys me and I'm all good!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
I just receive my new Typhoon jacket (Spring 2010 model), and I love it. I'm 5'8", 185 lbs, and the large fits great with just enough room for layers. I got mine in Cypress/Duffel and it looks even better than the picture. The Cypress color is quite a bit darker than it looks in the picture...which is great. I like the Spring 2010 style a lot better. It has a cbl of 30" giving you a little extra length. The jacket has 2 comfortable hand pockets which are mesh lined, a big chest pocket and pit zips. There is a dual drawstring on the hem. The hood is very adjustable and comfortable. The hood brim is stiff enough that it doesn't flop in your face. And of course...it looks very stylish. My only complaint is the lack of an inside pocket, but the big chest pocket makes up for it. I have a Cohesion jacket too, and I give the edge to the Typhoon jacket. Don't hesitate to buy.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
Being a hiker in northwest, rain is a major consideration. This one works very good in keeping rain out.
I tend to sweat quite a lot and I found this to manage the moisture very well - much better than the (waterproof, breathable) jackets I owned earlier.
Hood fits very well and the adjustments are very easy. Pitzips are a pain though - I need both hands and require some tugging to make them work. Room for improvement there. Would have liked some reflective material on the jacket too.
Jacket fits well - yet has space for extra layers.

Have taken it on a few backpacking trips where temps dropped to the 30's and this "shell" was plenty fine against the frigid temps and the wind

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
Worked well on an Arctic 2 week backpack. We didn't get much rain, but it was pretty windy and the jacket "breathed" and blocked the wind. Layered well with a down sweater when at camp or with a pile jacket when hiking. No noticeable wear from carrying a 55+ lb backpack hiking 2-5 miles/day. Fit me well.
Took a while to find a gortex jacket at a reasonable price

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
Just bought this Jacket using my REI Dividend and 20% off coupon. I did a lot of research and talked to my buddy that works at REI and decided that this was the best rain jacket i could afford. at [$] this was a little pricey considering its just for when it rains - but after the discount i justified it. The jacket fits of the large side. I am 6'2" 216lbs and usually wear XL. I bought an XL and am now thinking about returning it for a large. It fits good with layers underneath so it may be able to double as a winter shell. This jacket has kept me completely dry in light rain/sleet. I am a bit skeptical about the side pockets not having waterproof zippers like the pit zips do. I will b hesitant to put electronics in the side pockets in a downpour. The hood is awesome! It is large enough to fit a helmet but can be adjusted to fit snuggly around your head/face. The stiff brim stays out of your face and adds protection. Because the hood can be adjusted to fit so well it barely effects your peripheral vision. The pit zips are very hard to zip and unzip. This is inevitable with waterproof zippers but these take two hands and a bit of effort. Not what i want when i need to cool down a bit. As i stated before, this jacket is the best bang for your buck.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Rain Jacket - Men's:
I really like/liked this jacket, I was happy with its lightweight, breathability and waterproofing features. I tore a hole in the back of it crawling through some briers in MS. I should have realized the PacLite material was the lightest and least durable of the GoreTex fabrics. I still recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good light weight, protective, breathable shell. I bought mine one size bigger than my usual anticipating layering, but its not necessary. REI took mine back, now I have to find something more durable.
