I recently purchased the Novara Padded Cycle Boxers - Men's at my local REI store. I took up mountain biking in addition to me road cycling and wanted to use regular shorts for mountain biking. I bought these hoping I could use them in place of padded bike shorts. The shorts have a 4-way stretch polyester/spandex mesh that does feel dry and comfortable against the skin. They do get damp from riding. They are Gender-specific with a pre-curved chamois which conforms to body contours; the channel-designed, low-bulk, open-cell foam provides some comfort in the saddle. Soft elastic waistband and turned self-fabric leg openings provide a comfortable fit. The Flat-stitched side seams do prevent chafing; I did not get any chaffing while wearing them. I found that they do not offer the padding of "bike shorts". I ended up buying Navarro mountain bike shorts and prefer to wear them instead. I do wear them with my regular padded bike shorts on longer rides. They are ok for short rides and handy to have in your bag or when traveling. I would buy them again and have recommended them to my wife, the ladies type. For me they are best for doubling up my padding on longer rides. I know using them in tandem with other shorts is looked down on by purists but hey it's my derriere in the saddle and d sometimes any help is appreciated. These shorts are actually sized appropriately for American consumers. I am a size 34 and the large fit a little large. I could have used a size medium. Most bike stuff is sized European and usually sized at least one size too small but these larges are large.

Odd Size and Shape

[...] these liners are made well, however for me, they had some fit issues.I am a consistent medium, and found these shorts fairly over sized. In addition, the pad in the liners, is very large compared to other liners and shorts I have ridden in. They chafed both on and off the bike. (I am skinny and tall)I was concerned about the padding, so when I returned them I went with the Canari Gel liners. They fit like a glove as a medium, and the padding is a size more to my liking. Haven't put many miles on them yet, but in a short ride they felt fantastic.[...]

Comfortable even off the bike

I have some Canari bike shorts that are really comfortable in the seat, but the cuffs are a little tight around my thighs. I figured I'd try these underneath regular shorts, and after a dozen or rides (long recreational and running errands), I'm really happy with them. The stitching and elastic seem to be holding up after a few delicate-cycle washes. Most importantly for me though, is that they aren't totally uncomfortable to wear even off the bike. I'm gong to buy a couple more of these so I can wear them when I start commuting to work in the fall.

Not what i was hoping for

Padded underwear make bicycle commuting so much more enjoyable! I was excited about a potential Novara solution because my old undies are wearing out. I prefer undies with a minimal light, flexible, soft chamois. Something to handle the moisture and rubbing of my commute, but mostly feel like normal undies when i'm not riding. Unfortunately the pad in these is closer to "normal" bike shorts: It feels like a full diaper if i wear them off-bike. The size, stiffness, and thickness of the pad made them not suitable for my preference. My commute is about 12.5 miles with mountain roads and traffic. I usually commute 3 times a week, year round. The undies i use now are modified - they had a gel insert which i pulled out leaving just the terrycloth cover. As with all Novara products i've used, i found the size to be too generous: Normally a Medium in everything, i had to go down to Small in these.

great product for the price

Wore on bicycle trip from Pittsburgh to DC, where I wanted to ware cargo shorts for pocket storage of gear. Also wanted to be better dressed for sight seeing and going into restaurants. Excellent fit, very comfortable, for 50 mile rides and sight seeing. Drys very fast after washing, and comfort exceeded my expectations. Will buy again when needed.

Super Huge, not enough pad for a big guy

I bought these like many to avoid the cost of higher priced shorts. I am a big guy, 5'11'' 280lb. These shorts just do not have the padding I was looking for. Sore sit bones set in around 15 miles, while wearing my Pearl full shorts I can go 30 miles without a flinch. I like the concept of these for casual riding, but they do not fit the bill. My seat Specialized Riva- while not a rock hard race seat-it is a fairly hard and slim seat (works for me body wise aside from the pain with these shorts). As such I needed a little bit more padding than these boxers offer. Also these were HUGE. I bought a XXL set and I think I could have gotten away with a L. If you a heavier rider, think about looking for some thicker padding if you are riding on a less than plush saddle for 10+ miles.

Good for commuting

These got me into chamois. For the first 1.5 years of riding to work, I rode without tights. Although my seat was comfy enough, my first ride to work with them was the last time I would never ride without chamois again. I was "how did I ever ride with out these?" These are great for commutes to work (mine is about 12miles each way), when you want to save your expensive chamois for the bigger rides. I have 4 of these and generally ride 3 to 4 days a week to work starting in the spring.

Good Enough

I wear these mountain biking all the time. And for the most part, I really like them a lot. Definitely helps the bum on single track. The waistband would be my only complaint. It rides way up on my back for some reason. Not a super big deal, just a little weird. The fit other than this is excellent. I wear them with a technical fabric hiking short. Definitely a cheap alternative to expensive, single purpose mtn biking shorts.

Good alternative to biking shorts

A great alternative to using bicycling shorts. I wear them under my athletic shorts or cold weather tights. The padding dramatically improves ride comfort and I do not experience any thigh/groin chaffing on long rides. The waist band feels a bit loose on me, but the boxers did not travel up or down my torso while I rode. If you are a cheapskate like me, this is a prime alternative to spending $60+ on biking shorts.

What I needed!

I have a 2010 Cannondale F7. The seat just hurt my rear no matter how far I would ride. I didn't want the spandex pants because the weather varies where I am at and did not want to spend on long and short ones. So, I bought these liners...yeah....I can wear all my current clothes with these underneath...and Yes, my rear is safe and secure...lol...cheaper than a new saddle and/or biker pants.
