Comments about Avid Shorty 4 Cantilever Brake Set - Black:

I got these for a Surly Long Haul Trucker I built up for touring. I needed cantilever breaks, as opposed to a linear pull, because I needed them to work with road brake levers; my second criteria was that they had to be low profile enough not to interfere with the rear panniers. And, of course, they needed to be able to stop a loaded touring bike. Unfortunately, these breaks didn't cut it. While they met my first two criteria, they just aren't strong enough to provide the adequate stopping power. I tried using the medium and long straddle cables (the short one wouldn't clear the fenders) and I even tried upgrading to Avid Rim Wrangler pads. They got a bit better, but still it took a lot of force to slow the bike even when unloaded. I've since installed Tektro's linear pull compatible aero levers and switched to linear pull breaks. Too bad, these looked cool. These may work out for cyclo cross or other applications, but I wouldn't recommend them for a touring bike.
