Comments about CycleOps PowerTap Wired Comp System - 700C Rear Wheel and Computer:
If you are reading this comment, you are likely interested in training with power: IMHO it is really worth the money you spend to get this device.
For those who are already convinced, well this wheel is a good and conveniently priced option.
The powermeter adds ~450 to the price of a mavic rim and a decent hub.
The wheel, 32 spokes, is a great training wheel. REI builds it with more expensive black finish spokes and the black version of the open pro. Both make for a good looking wheel.
The brake surface is well machined (as all the open pro rims) and although is not the one treated for more durability (CD), it's a rear wheel, so not the one that suffers the most from braking.
The assembly could have been done better: the wheel is slightly out of true. Nothing noticeable without the proper truing stand.
32 spokes makes for durability and a safe ride: it's unlikely that you break a spoke and even if you do, you can ride back home, no matter how far you are (sometimes 40 mi in my case).
The wheel is at hos best as a training wheel: robust, durable, and serviceable. You can probably train for 50000 mi on this one, just performing the basic hub maintenance (10 years in my case!!!).
Installation is a breeze (wired meansno coupling of sensors, etc.) and the provided cradle and software let you download and analyze your power files.
As a racing wheel is a bit on heavy side: 576g for the hub is 200g too much. Not everybody, though, has dura ace/super record/zipp hubs and this wheel, coupled with a light front one, can do an excellent job in road races, and still be good for crits (it's easily serviceable too, in case of a crash: no custom pieces or assembly).
Bottom line: the best clincher for training (same level with same build of HED and DT), affordable and still race-able.
I see it inferior only to builds like 404 with wireless powertaps...which cost so much more.
Last recommendation: get it trued around 2000mi the first time.
