Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-30 GPS:
The unit itself is impressive. Like its more expensive sibling the PN-40, it comes with base maps the other guys offer at additional cost. Signal acquisition is fast, reliable and accurate and redraws are quick. It has plenty of options for folks looking for bells and whistles but can keep it simple as well.
But...the Topo 8 software is a bit of a chore. It is more than powerful enough for what I need and has lots of features, but it is not self-evident and new users should be prepared to spend some time figuring it out. Like others have stated in the PN-40 reviews, it is buggy and transferring maps is hit and miss. When it misses, it is not clear why or how to fix it.
The included certificate allows users to download some additional content at no cost, but even this has proven buggy for me when working with imagery files.
I give the unit itself high marks. The price point is good and the additional content is a big selling point. When Delorme addresses some of the shortcomings in the Topo 8 software and perhaps includes a tutorial on the DVD, this package will be just about perfect.

Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-30 GPS:
I had a Rino 120 and it was good when I got it six years ago. I moved to South TX from Washington State and my hiking days went away for a while. I few buddies and I went hiking in Big Bend. I looked around for months for a GPS and after reading other reviews and watching to demo's on the DeLorme web sight I was hooked. The unit went above and beyond what I was expecting. Signal was fast and strong even under trees. I was able to get signal on the bottom floor of my house not near any windows. The softwear better than I expected. THIS IS A GREAT BUY FOR THE PRICE!!!! It would be worth the price if they doubled it!

Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-30 GPS:
I will be using this for navigation in the Motorhome and Geocaching. I have been wanting this unit for some time and when I found this unit on sale I was delighted. I have no use for the elevation or the true heading or any other "whistles and bells". I have not had it long enough to find any thing wrong yet.
I have had some trouble finding the data on the sd card.
I like the bearing and distance to the destination.
Being able to see the screen in the sunlight is very nice.
The included software is a plus.
