Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first backpacking stove I received my Jetboil Flash Cooking System with Java Kit for a Christmas gift. I had been wanting one but was unsure about quality, reliability, size/weight and ease of use. I couldn't be happier with this cooking system! I love it and I'll never go packing without it. I am an adult Scout leader and we always try to "be prepared", but keep the pack size to a minimum. All of the components fit inside the Jetboil container including a can of cooking fuel and it is very light weight. At 1,200 feet of elevation I boiled approx 3 cups of water in a very short time. I didn't actually time it but it came to boiling temp in a shorter time than my gas range in my home could have done it. The insulated sleeve makes it comfortable to hold onto with hot contents. You can have your morning oatmeal and coffee made in just a few minutes. It's super easy to clean at home or even trail side. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is in the market for one. The cooking fuel canisters last a while as well. With 2 or 3 camping trips per month ranging from 2-3 nights each, I can get a fuel canister to last almost three months. Don't hesitate. You won't regret spending the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Don't be fooled by I saw one of these in action at an event and was fascinated. It seems to be a much more efficient way to make coffee 1 or 2 cups at a time without firing up the Coleman stove and percolator etc... Here are my first impressions of the Java version. The neoprene sleeve is not just great, but mandatory. Without it the container would be way too hot to handle at all so not a "plus" but part of the design. However, when there it liquid in the container, the nylon webbing handle stitched to the neoprene sleeve, does not grip the container firmly and I didn't feel like I had quite the control of the hot liquid that I would like. The cap and bowl work fine. You can store either the small fuel canister or the coffee in the container...not both. As noted above, the Java "kit" - meaning plunger, does not fit with everything else inside the container, thus your 3-piece (screen and sectioned threaded plunger shaft) have to go somewhere else... easy to lose. Also noted above, for better result, use the plunger flat side up and COURSE grounds are better than fine. However, some will still escape into your cup. While not quite "cowboy coffee" it is worth noting. I checked "hard to clean" because it is like any other french press where you have to rinse out the coffee grounds. If you are packing in your own water, go the instant route b/c this takes a fair amount of water to thoroughly rinse (sure, paper towels are an option etc.. but you get the idea). I like the size for 1-2 cups of hot water, great for Hot cocoa in no time for the kids, ramen soups etc... when you don't want to or need to use the coleman. Fuel seems reasonable at $4.50 and $5.50 for the 110 or 250g sizes and the local outdoors shop. Certainly high on my list of things to bring but with a nod to it's limitations. FWIW, I have not tried cooking in it nor have I tried any of the tools per se. For us, I will add the Pot support and bring along the Bialetti ;-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use I'd been wanting the Jet Boil for a couple of years and finally bought it last month for a trip to Yellowstone. We car camped at 7800 ft. and the Jet Boil worked well. It boils quickly (about a minute at that altitude), was easy to use, and since I only boiled water and made coffee in it, it was easy to clean. I think it's perfect for one user. There were three of us so a kettle would have been more efficient overall. By the time I boiled water for each of our drinks and meals, I probably could have boiled a kettle on a stove. However, the Jet Boil is nice and compact and if you want a quick way to boil water that doesn't take up a lot of room, it's a great item. I will definitely be using it again. The package I got had the coffee press. It worked fine but isn't necessary if you use instant coffee or have a mug with a press. I did not have any problems with the ignitor. A couple of times it didn't light right away but after screwing the stove into the fuel canister tighter, it worked fine. There's a fill line inside the Jet Boil and if you overfill, you risk getting burned as the water bubbles high when it starts to boil and can jump over the rim. I really like the way most everything fits inside. With the coffee press, the fuel canister does not fit but I bought the larger size so it wouldn't have fit anyway. We used the small size in three days but used it for boiling drinks and water for meals for three people. I bought a long handled titanium spoon which is a good length for stirring coffee in the pot and fits nicely in the spoon sleeve on the side. It's a fun, compact, and functional way to boil water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great stove, but a miss with the press I couldn't figure out why this system was the same price as the regular Flash system, even though it came with the coffee press. After trying the press a couple of times, I figured out why - because the press is pretty much worthless. I first tried the coffee pack that came with it - bad idea, too finely ground and it all seeped around the edges of the press and into my coffee. Next, I tried grinding my own beans, very course grind, but this still didn't stop the grounds from seeping around the edges. Overall, not really dissatisfied, as I love the Jetboil system, and can always get a good cup of Via coffee with this system. Given that you get the whole cooking system, along with the fuel can stabilizer, plus the pot support, as well as the coffee press, this is a good buy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Jetboil has to focus on the small stuff. PROS: i take this product with me on every backcountry trip winter summer or in-between. this product has one of the fastest boil times ive ever seen, even at altitude. its best for one pot meals where all you are doing is heating water, or making hot drinks. the Jetboil is extremely stable in all conditions, the pot even screws into the cooktop, a nice touch. CONS: after 3 multiday trips the little clicker sparker that lights the fuel wihtout a match became completely useless. idk if its a flaw in my machine or a recurring problem but now i have to carry matches with me everywhere i go to light the darn thing!! a word of caution when i realized the starter had ceased to start the fire i proceeded to try to light it with my buddie's Jetboil. when i turned the lighted jetboil on its side the nice steady flame that normally eschews from the top turned into a huge orange ball of flame. i promptly returned the jeboil to its vertical state and everything went back to normal.. no need to worry!! also the french press device, A GREAT IDEA IN THEORY, does not work well. it does not fit very snug against the sides of the pot so after steeping the grounds and while filtering a lot of grounds would escape around the edge adding an extra crunch to my morning brew! a great stove in general just dont use the filter for your morning coffee.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great kit, but start gives me issues This has been a great little canister stove. The ignitor doesnt work all of the time (I have two of these units and have problems with it on both of them). I keep a box of matches in it, so I always have them. Other than that issue, i love it. It packs well and it light weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good headline- gives item title and comp I teach camping skills to new Boy Scout leaders in the OLS and BALOO program and I wanted a Jetboil to show leaders a great way to heat water for whatever they need: coffee, tea, or for meal purposes- cooking or heating water for clean-up.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for short trip It's on the heavier side. I sugest only using it to just boil water and not mixing anything in the container. It can be hard to clean with the insulator around it. and you dont have a water source. The gas can can add some extra weight depending on how how many you need to bring. I also found the Press not great, i found coffee grinds in it after pressing it. and again hard to clean the grinds out if you are not near a water source. But other then that its great, boils quick, has a tempter indicator on it and you can use other pots on it to cook.
