Comments about REI 3 oz. Bottle Set - Package of 3:
The perfect "3-1-1" bottle is surprisingly difficult to find. These come close. They are made, I beleive, from "PET" which is stong, crystal clear, very lightweight and slightly flexible. The shape is very good. Unlike the cylindrical polyethelyne Nalgene 3oz bottle, these are more retangular and more space efficient to pack. A small consideration for many but if you are a "one bag" traveller and live from a single carry on you know how precious space is, especially in your "3-1-1" bag. For this reason I am not a big fan of the silicon Gotoob bottles which are even less space efficient than the round Nalgene bottles.
The caps of these REI bottles seal well and are interchangeable with an included spray top. They also interchange perfectly with Nalgene caps. The caps are of the push-down-on-one-side-and-a-spout-flips-up-on-the-other variety. While this is probably more secure than a typical flip-top, which will flip open if you so much as look at it the wrong way, I prefer the even more secure Nalgene "dispenser" flip-up spout at least for thin liquids. These have never failed me in many thousands of miles of travel. The REI cap, however, has a wider spout which is more suited for very thick liquids. I recommend securing it with tape before travel. Minus one star for the cap design- good but not perfect.
I cannot comment on the pill organizer, spray pump or vial. I got an older set that only contained the bottles. I do use similar vials for thick creams and that works well. The Gotoob "one handed" vials are particularly handy. I think the spray pump would be very good for spray-on sunscreen or deodorant but I wouldn't put insect repellent in a non-original container.
For bottles smaller or larger than 3 oz. I have a large collection of oval Nalgene bottles which pack well. For some puzzling reason Nalgene does not seem to make a 3 oz. oval bottle. If you get a good Nalgene/cap combo they will never leak. But you don't always get good ones, so I recommend testing them with a squeeze in the store before purchase.
The included mesh bag would -probably- pass TSA muster as a 3-1-1 bag because, unlike the plain mesh bag in my older set, this newer bag is lined with plastic (probably urethane).
