Great for a light cover to protect your skin.
Stays in place & gives a nice protective layer from the cold on the go without being too hot.
unbeatable
Being wool, this is far superior to any synthetic in quality of breathing and insulating without sweat-up and overheating. I have neck pain problems, this neck warmer is top value for that. While some seem to have found it uncomfortable, I forget it's on. Weightless, comforting. Length: the fabric is so fine, it can sit low on your neck not much more than an inch in height... or you can cover whole neck, or disappear your head in it. For more formal occasions, it looks classy, like an old-fashioned cravat. Washable: this is modern wool, mine goes through the washing machine BUT NOT in the dryer. It's almost dry from the washing machine.
I love it
I bought this primarily to wear while hiking to deal with sweat getting into my eyes. I chose the wool since we are starting the fall season. I wore the buff on a 24.5 mile 2 day hike and it worked just as I hoped. I never once had an issue with sweat getting into my eyes. Also the morning of day two was cool and I was able to double over the buff keeping my head warm until the day warmed up. After the temperature got hotter I was able to convert it back to the pirate style to finish out my hike. I plan on buying another in the near future.
Love My Buff!
I received my first Buff as a gift following my diagnosis with cancer. It was the best headwear I had while undergoing chemo (I lost my hair in October and it was gone the entire winter). It was soft, warm, and versatile. I could wear it single or double layered. I could let it fall off my head so that when I spun around, it reminiscent of long hair. I now have 4 (and about to get another) and wear them almost daily in the colder months - we snowmobile, so it's great as a neck gaiter and for covering my nose & mouth with the shield open. My daughter (in grade school) loves them, as well.
Prevents soggy beard on winter bike rides
I bought this because I was tired of my beard and coat/hood getting super wet from breathing while biking in the winter. The wool buff is really comfortable and my breath passes through while keeping the wind from stinging my face. This has the end result of staying relatively dry. I think for really cold days I might want to get one of their synthetic fabrics, but for days with temps as far down as the low 20s I think I'd pick the merino wool buff. I should say that my bike commute is pretty short, so I don't know if it would hold up to an hour of breathing in the cold air with out getting a little wet. Overall, I love it and carry it with me most days in the winter.
Expensive, but essential
Don't remember what prompted me to buy this, but within two uses, it became essential. Sizing. I've got a big head. When I wear it as a wide headband, this things hugs it comfortably. This is perfect for me. But if you've a smaller head you might think it's a bit loose. And then the wool. Extremely comfortable. Helps with the wind and even rain can't spoil the enjoyment. Being wool it's ability to insulate just keeps going. The material is superb. It dries surprisingly well. I was out just yesterday and did 10 miles and 2,500 EG in the snow. 4 miles in I had sweated it completely through so took it off to see if it would dry. An hour later I reached for it and found it significantly dryer than when it was removed. Put it back on like an old friend. And finally, the concept of a buff. You can contort this thing into a number of variations. You can do a full head, face and neck wrap, skull cap, headband, a scarf, and so on. Like you can easily pull a single or double layer of material over your ears. I like the ability to 'fine tune' my head layering like this. Really helps in layering through out the day. It's been on my head for almost 150 miles now, and still looks like new. I expect it will last many years.
Disappointing
Holes developed all over it after 8 months of regular/gentle winter use. Because I bought it mid-way through winter, it was too late to return per REI policy (and outside of Buff’s 30-day return policy). Outreach to Buff to let them know about the poor quality was unsuccessful. I liked the color and the softness. Didn't like how loosely it fit over face in cold weather, and of course that it disintegrated so rapidly (I've had a lot of merino wool products over the years and they've lasted for years).
These things are wonderful!
I've been camping and hiking for so long now that it is rare for a new piece of gear to enter my collection and be regarded as essential. That is the case with these merino Buffs. Super light-weight and packable into a space smaller that a racket ball, Buffs are a multi-function piece of gear: hat, scarf, headband, glasses cleaner, and, my favorite, a blindfold when the sun gets up before you care to. these are much warmer than one would think based on how thin they are. As has been said before, you won't notice it when you wear it, but you'll know when you aren't!
My favorite accessory ever
I've never been quite as in love with an accessory as I am with this buff. It's the single most useful simple accessory I've ever had. I thought I was buying it for my b/f to keep his neck warm because he'll never wear a scarf. He never got it. (sorry!) It's so lightweight, it fits under any jacket. Being tissue-thin wool, it's comfortable in almost any weather. If it gets really cold, I pull it right up over my hat. If it warms up, it scrunches up. It takes up next to no space. It's surprisingly not itchy at all. Just cozy. I wear it under my bicycle helmet for cold weather rides - it's enabled me to get in more all-season bike riding in. Just a super versatile accessory. Glad I got it. (I've now got 4.)
Is it supposed to itch?
I like the all the ways I can pull this over my neck, my head, ears, yada yada yada. Sure, wool doesn't stink after months of use, but I don't plan on wrapping my arm pits with this. I love wool. It just itches too much if I don't have something to distract me. I think they made some of these with regular wool, and I got one of those--were they thinking we sensitive types wouldn't notice--really, now. I may have to line this one with some stretchy polyester. My Icebreaker wool shirts don't itch. Hey, I have an Icebreaker wool shirt with a few holes that I can convert--I hope I didn't toss it!
