I go on about 3 or 4 hikes a week. I wanted a boot that gave me ankle and arch support and I wanted something that wasn't going to have a long break in period. I went in to my Local REI store and these boots were sitting on the SALE rack if you can believe it! They were the only ones left and they were my size to fit exactly. They felt comfortable in the store but I would have never guessed how comfortable they were out of the box. I went on a long hike after it rained non stop and the Barton Creek Greenbelt was gushing out water after the rain storm. They were waterproof. At some points on my hike the water came up to the beginning of my ankle and my feed stayed dry. They just get keep getting better!
I've been wearing my Oboz Sawtooth boots around the house, then around town running errands and on an all day walk to break them in before I use them on a hike and not once did my feet hurt. They are comfortable and I'm looking forward to hitting the trail with them. I wish I could wear them to work they are so comfortable. I usually have to wear orthotics or shoes made with firm arch support. I wear a size 7 and got a half size larger. I recommended these to a friend already. Giving these a 4 until I see how they stand the test of the trail and of time.
I purchased my Sawtooth hiking boots to replace another brand that I had worn out. I took the sales persons recommendation, tried them on and they felt comfortable. They proved themselves to be great boots. Hiked in Sedona, AZ on so many different trails. They had excellent grip on a 45 degree angle walking down smooth Rock. I also now know how waterproof they are, as I stepped into a stream to help an accident victim. I would definitely recommend these boots for comfort and performance. I even wear them all day on a shipping dock.
I am super impressed with these boots, and I am never going back to anything else. I had my previous hiking boots for 10 years (*gasp*) so the upgrade felt amazing on my feet. I forgot to break them in, and proceeded to hike 17 miles up a Colorado 14er. By the end of the day, my toes did not feel squished, even after hiking downhill for half of those miles. The only down side is that it fits funny on my left ankle bone. I have this problem with snowboard/ski boots as well, so I don't consider that a fault of the shoe itself. I got a half size smaller than my usual shoe size, FYI. All in all, Oboz is the way to go for hiking boots.
Every hiking boot I have ever had gave me blisters. Break-in time was long and blisters still appeared. These boots are the best I have ever owned by far: comfortable from day 1, no blisters. First try with Oboz was 10 days in No Cascades NP: fine in cold, rain, heat and sweaty feet. Second new pair (wore out the first wearing them on daily hikes) broken in at Glacier NP, 8-12 miles/day. All comfortable in hot, cold, wet, dry. I hope Oboz stays in business a long time because my feet need these boots! (They are so outstanding they prompted this, my first online review.)
I have bad feet and often wear mountaineering grade boots for big hikes. However, I feel like I am walking in ski boots when I wear them and they are quite bulky for travel. So, I bought these and they worked out great. Really great support in the sole - you cannot twist/turn that sole, it is solid. Even the removable insole which I usually replace - actually it is good quality with arch and shock support. On my feet they felt light and comfortable, even traveling on the plane. On trails they were great - even over rough lava on the Big Island of Hawaii. All in all a surprising find with great results.
I purchased these boots for day hikes in Sedona and the Grand Canyon and am very pleased I did. They were comfortable from day 1 with no break in period required. I bought one whole size larger than I normally wear in street shoes so I could wear mid-weight socks and still have room. They provided very good grip when we scrambled up and down steep embankments and were waterproof crossing steams. I normally wear orthotics but the boots provided good support so I didn't need them. The bottoms are extremely solid and my feet and ankles felt secure on all terrains. I would highly recommend these!
I started off liking these boots. I have a narrow heel and after several trips to REI, a combination of hiking socks, liners and a special lacing technique seems to solve the problem. I wore the boots on several hikes to break them in, even wore around town. Seemed to be okay and broken in. Then, I hiked the Inca Trail. I found myself with painful bruises around my ankles after walking the many steps. I end up loosenng the laces around my ankles against REI recommendation to save my ankles. Fortunately my toes held out during the decent. I will never wear these boots again.
My husband swears by the Oboz Sawtooth, so I purchased a pair of my own, And I am glad I did! First, the great quality is immediately evident. The boots are not too heavy, but give excellent support. I especially like their performance in downhill hiking. My heel is held and my toes do not jam into the toe box when going down slopes. The traction is also excellent in dry and wet conditions. I wore them on a eight mile hike last week with no soreness or hint of blisters. My feet fell well protected in them. As far as looks go, I was apprehensive about the "ice" colors, but in reality, they are much more subtle. I will definitely buy another Oboz product when I need a new pair.
I never believed reviews that said comfy out of the box but these definitely were. After only a couple very short hikes, I wore them backpacking for a week with a 40 pound load. I have a narrow heel yet like a larger toe box, and these accomodated, especially because of the awesome lacing system - easy to get nice and snug. Can't comment on waterproofness though cuz wasn't really in any wet conditions. We'll see.
