Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
Save yourself some money and walk away from these while you can still walk away. Seriously, I have these as well as the low top versions and they do NOTHING to protect your foot or underfoot. THESE ARE NOT HIKERS! They are tennis shoes in grey. If you're going to walk on a nice, well graded little trail with a colorful rock boarder then they are maybe okay.

Gor-Tex failed after three (3) months....
Upper portion of shoe separated from footbed after 5 months.
Don't waste your time - much better options out there.

Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
Bought this boot after walking about in the Ventilators which were quite possibly the most comfortable boot I have ever wrapped around my feet. But, alas, the Ventilators did not even pretend to promise resistance to water. So I got these thinking they were a lot like the Ventilators, but WATERPROOF. They are not. They are not even water resistant. I wore them once walking for an hour through damp grass and they seem to be all that Merrell promised they were. They were comfortable, lightweight, and seemingly waterproof. The next day (I walk my dog on our neighboring golf course every morning for an hour or so) my feet began to get damp. After two weeks, while walking in the rain, my toes were soggy. After 3 months, every time I walked through wet grass, my feet were wet. Finally, the souls began to separate from the uppers. I threw them in the trash. What a waste of money. I will never buy Merrell again. Maybe unfair, but there are plenty of good boot manufacturers out there, and at a hundred bucks, I'd rather see what they've got to offer. Shame on Merrell. I don't know where they're made, but as Neil Young says--piece of[*]

Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
Generally after hiking only a few miles the insoles move and boot leaks (toes). Yet the venting is awesome. Tread holds on down-trail but catches on sides. Light weight but provides ankle support with 20 lb loads or less, if you are under 200 lbs. Good for lite-fast trips. Cheapest hiking shoe that REI offers with guarantees. Merrell should know the Gore-Tex membrane breaks-down from rock dust abrasion. Also the insoles should not have smooth bottoms. These are design defects.

Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
I took these boots on two seperate hikes: a 31 mile day hike (yes, day hike) and on the 93 mile Wonderland Trail in 4 days. I am a long distance, light pack weight hiker and needed a sturdy but light weight boot for my adventures. These are amazingly comfortable and held up as expected. Sure, you can tell that they've got some miles on them, but they look like they still have a ton of life left in them. There is only one small piece of the tread that came off, but with 124 miles of rugged hiking, I think I can give them a bye on that.
They're still water proof too. On the last day of the Wonderland, as I was crossing a small stream, a rock moved on me causing me to lose my balance and step in the stream. While my foot was in the water for only a moment, they allowed no moisture in and could barely tell that the outside of the boot got wet.
These were the first boots I tried on in the store and they fit like a glove. I tried on several other boots while there, including the ones that were more than twice as expensive as these, and nothing fit better. Even some trail runners couldn't match the comfort these boots provided. On the trail, I recieved no heel blisters (a miracle for me) and only experienced one hot spot on top of my right big toe that was easily covered with moleskin to prevent an actual blister.
The traction was stellar. In mud, on snow and while crossing streams over wet log bridges or rocks, I never once lost traction. I could see where others had, but they clearly weren't wearing the same boots I had.
All in all, an outstanding boot! Bear in mind that everyone has different shaped feet so make sure to try several pairs of boots. These are top notch boots though.
Service and delivery comments:
Service at my local REI (Tukwila/Southcenter, WA) was outstanding as always. You can always count on the best service and best return policy from REI. That's why I love shopping with them.

Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
Great boots for day hikes or for everyday wear in winter/wet conditions. Great traction on loose soil, rocks, ice and snow. Merrells fit me better than any other make, supremely comfortable and these are waterproof/breathable to boot. Retired Army, ex-paratrooper and long distance hiker in all conditions, I know boots and these are excellent for light duty use. I would not use them carrying heavy packs, but they offer better support than Army jungle boots and I carried 50+ loads with those frequently, so they could be used for that but I think there are better designs out there for heavy loads. Also great for mountain biking in inclement weather.

I got these boots a year ago and figured its time to write a review. I use to use a pair of old school heavy leather boots that would cause blisters after the third day on backpacking trips.
I've used these boots on dozens of day hikes(10 to 20mi) and several multi day backpacking trips(3 to 6 days) and I have not had any blisters at all even carrying a 45lbs pack on 20mi days.
The other nice thing is all I wear for socks now are dri-fit running socks, no more thick hot wool socks.

Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
I've been an avid hiker since I was a teenager, which means I've been hiking for more than 40 years. I've used a variety of brands of boots, including some from companies that don't exist anymore (remember Pivetta?).
These are the best day hiking boots I've ever worn. They fit perfectly, they're lightweight but supportive, they grip trail and rock well, and they breathe. I've had my first pair for over a year now and have put at least 300 miles on them. There's still plenty of tread and it looks as if they'll last at least another year or two.
My only complaint is that now, after a year of hard wear and a fair amount of slogging through mud, the waterproofing isn't that great anymore. But it's well known that Gore-tex loses some of its waterproofing capabilities when it's dirty, so I can't claim to be too surprised or disappointed. I wear midweight wool socks when I hike in heavy rain, and even though my feet end up a bit wet, they stay warm and comfortable.
Overall I'd highly recommend these boots. In fact, I bought another pair and put them on the shelf just in case Merrell stops making them.

Comments about Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Boots - Men's:
My last three pairs of shoes have been the Merrell Moab shoes, and I love them. So I was excited to finally need new hiking boots so I could buy the mid height version. However, I like my boots to be waterproof, and after reading the other reviews, I almost didn't buy these...
However, I'm so glad I did. The fit was exactly like my shoes - so comfortable. I took them on a two day hike without any prior break-in, with no problems. Second trip was a 4-wheeler trip, and I broke down in the middle of a three-inch deep stream. I spent the next 30 minutes in the water - and the only time my foot got wet was when I stepped in a hole and the water came over the top. And even then, it only felt wet for a few minutes. I'm so glad I went ahead with these boots - they are great!!
