exc purpose built breathable softshell

Owned jacket for 3 months now, so not a long time but it's seen a wide range of uses. This is a very conditions specific jacket that is the best I've ever used in cold to cool, highly aerobic sports/conditions. It is not great as a casual softshell, and potential buyers should be clear about this. I own half a dozen softshells, and this is not what I grab to walk around town in cold, windy conditions. It simply breathes too well. It's very comfortable, but if you're used to windstopper membranes in other softshells, this feels drafty in comparison. This is not a fault of the jacket, but simply not the primary focus of Polartec PowerShield. When I'm running, night biking, or climbing in cold weather, this jacket is spot on - feels like it was designed exactly for what I'm doing. I've struggled with core temp and sweat management with night mountain biking for a long time. Jackets that would keep me warm would often not breathe, and more breathable jackets would leave me feeling cold. This strikes a perfect balance as sweat management and brethability are outstanding, while leaving core temp right where it needs to be. I've used it at 28F with light wind, trail riding at about 10-15mph and it worked perfectly with a long sleeve breathable baselayer and a short sleeve jersey below it. It blocks a good amount of wind, but definitely not all. The Schoeller outer surface is great and highly abrasion resistant. I've downed my bike into trees and bushes on night rides and it doesn't even scuff this jacket. My first time wearing it I got jabbed with a branch and thought I had torn the brand new jacket but it was fine! very impressive. The DWR from the factory is like teflon. The jacket is very flexible in all directions, allowing for better range of motion than pretty much every softshell I have tried. Sleeve length is long, but the proper length for climbing which is great. I am about 6' 160lbs and the medium fit me perfectly. Like others said, athletic cut.. more space in the chest, tailored in toward the waist. The jacket handles a pack well, pockets are still accessible and the chest pockets are quite useful for things like maps. Neat feature with the chest pocket zippers... they're mounted on the outer lip of the material, under side facing toward your body. Seems odd at first but it's an extra level of protection from wind and precip from getting through your zippers. Overall, if you're highly active in cool to cold weather this jacket is a knock out of the park... between the build quality and sheer functionality, this thing is as good as it gets. For me usable conditions are: casual 35F and up with light to no wind. Aerobic 25F+ with up to say 15mph winds. If you're looking for the Arc'Teryx name but something more useful in higher winds or in less aerobic uses, check out the Venta line... they are great jackets, similar cut and build quality. Or something like Mountain Hardwear Alchemy or Marmot Sharp Point if you're in colder conditions (sub 35F with wind)(I own both, they're top notch as well but don't breath as nicely).

Good Looking Fall Jacket

Like all Arc'teryx clothing, this jacket is extremely well made. It's comfortable on chilly days and the finish is water resistant. Rain beads up nicely but if it were pouring and I was out in the weather for long periods I'd definitely put on my Beta AR jacket. As for the negatives, I think the sleeves are a bit too long, I wish the sleeve cuffs were adjustable, and the fleece lining in the sleeves doesn't play well with flannel shirts, sweatshirts or other non-slippery material - it kinda grabs hold of the shirt. Like all other Arc'teryx clothing, I order a size up and it fits great (excpet for the longer sleeves.

Distortion is Olive

Mainly just wanted to post a review with true color pictures to show people the distortion color is not quite what it appears on the site. It comes across as a bright cream or bone, but in reality it’s more of a champagne color with a tinge of green/olive. I actually bought it hoping it would be more olive, as some previous reviews had sad. It’s much more reminiscent of a LEAF crocodile than it is a cream like the pictures show. For reference, here it is against a bright white door, and next to a true cream Lulu warmup jacket. Hope this provides some clarity for others deciding on color.

Napoleon style pockets needed

My Gamma MX is fine for what it is, largely for in city. I have another Arcteryx softshell (name ?) with small 8"x 4.5" napoleon pockets, made of thicker material so it's too hot for most activities. The best jacket I have for things like North Shore trails, xc skiing etc is an old Cloudveil Serendipity softshell with 9.5" x 9" napoleon pockets that are highly useful to hold hat, skins, micro-spikes etc and not bother with a pack/fanny pack. Please design a new softshell with more functional pockets!

Great Jacket!

I bought this jacket in 2010 and had to buy another one for 2013. It has done me well in every setting imaginable: day trips into the wilderness, week-long camping trips, grueling airline travel, sporting events, house parties, and nice dinners. It looks great and does a fantastic job of keeping me warm and dry. The price was well worth the three years of near constant use.

The Best Jacket for Athletic Tall Men

I have bought three of these jackets, and I'm about to buy a fourth. I'm tall and slim: 6' 5", 165 pounds; and this is the best fitting jacket I've ever found. The sleeves are unusually long which is great for me. I have completely worn out one of these (the cuffs are frayed) by wearing it literally every day for about five years. It is very comfortable, but not particularly warm. In cold weather I wear a layer of fleece underneath. I use it for casual wear as well as hiking and traveling.

Versatility and Quality

I bought this Jacket to use it in North Georgia cool & cold weather, either for the outdoors, or to go to restaurants, etc.. With a temperature of 35 to 60 F, it feels good and easy to manage wearing single or double mid-layers. On a trip to Europe last year, the Jacket was very handy. While wearing it in the Les Halles Market area in Paris, a young fellow of early 20s put his thumbs up and commended the Jacket. I agreed with him. My wife & I were on a one-month train trip. The Jacket was used many times. It was good for me a 69 last year, and will be used again at 70 years young on the upcoming cool season. Good investment.

Great all-around spring & fall jacket

I've used this jacket almost daily for 6 years now. It's a nice upgrade from my old Arc'teryx softshell, the Gamma LT. It's softer inside with three bonus pockets vs. just the one hidden pocket for the LT. I miss having the hidden inside pocket of the LT, but the bonus tech pockets of the MX make it very useful for things like chargers, headphones, etc. and it doesn't take up handwarmer space. It's warmer and better wind/water resistant vs. the LT, but the sleeves for some reason are way too long on me with the M-size. S-size would have been a better choice and even then it would be 2" too long in the cuffs for me.

Taller buyers take note

I should start with the following disclaimer: I received this jacket as a gift just two weeks ago and have only had a chance to wear it a handful times. With that said, we can continue. I am 6'2", 190lbs. I had requested a large... typically that fits me perfectly in just about everything and this jacket for the most part does fit great. It stretches laterally, is slim on the torso and the drop back hem is a really design feature. My only concern is the length on the front... in my humble opinion it could stand another inch of material. When I reach overhead the jacket is well above belt level. That may not bother some people, but my preference is for a little extra length.

Best jacket for many conditions

This is my second Gamma MX (last one was stolen). I opted for the large size and it fits my 6’-0” 170 lb frame perfectly with room for a fleece mid layer. I love the longer sleeves too. The versatility and looks of this jacket are unsurpassed in my opinion. The quality is exceptional. This jacket has been and always will be my go-to for 40-60 degree Colorado days and is well-vented for more strenuous hiking. I love this jacket and highly recommend it for most outdoor activities.
