The product works as advertised except that the computer interface software for the update kit (purchased separately) is not MAC compatible as is described on the company's website. The MAC OS interface is still under development. After emailing the support staff about this they replied quickly, but did not answer my question as to when they may have a MAC version. The software is not needed to use the actual GPS, but is needed if you get the separate update kit. The 4 star rating reflects the misinformation on the company's website about the MC OS compatibility
for the "update kit", the GPS is a 5 star starter Geocache GPS for price and quality.
That said, my son loves the product and we have found many caches close to us. My son is 8yo and can operate the GPS and go through the menus by himself.

I got this for a 10 year old who is new to geaocaching. It is very simple and inexpensive enough to not have to worry about losing/breaking the unit. I like the fact that it is ready to go once batteries are installed.

Just a Note to Buyers: Dear Geomate.jr CommunityWhat can we say – this good thing has come to an end. We are no longer able to offer the Geomate.jr for sale or continue the Update Zone service. We do hope you've had as much fun geocaching as we've had working with everyone.To help keep the adventures happening however, we have made some software available here that will allow anyone with an Update Kit and a PC to load a Pocket Query from Geocaching.com to a Geomate.jr.Regrettably,The Geomate.jr TeamI had this fun GeoCaching GPS since 2010 and loved it. Since I read this news, I cannot update new mass region caches from their website. This GPS is now useless for my needs and I returned it. It was fun while it lasted. RIP Geomate Jr.

I'm unsure how to update a prior review, so am adding a second review for this product. The Geomate Jr. website has been brought back online. If permanent this would null and void my previous review. This is an excellent product for casual geocaching and I had given it my recommendation prior to the temporary shut down of the company. So, if they're back for good thumbs-up, if not thumbs-down. Before purchasing the product I would suggest contacting the company or searching message boards to determine their long range health. You can not fully update the unit without their website.

This is a great first timers tool for caching..Get the kids out side and have fun with it. We have owned ours for a year--starting to out grow it, but still find it fun to use. For updating--don't try to log onto geomatejr via AOL, I don't know why but could not get updates this way. Used explorer only and had no problems. Will agree with others, this is a simple device-not for hard core hiking or other common GPSr use. Nevertheless---new to geocaching--get one.

This device is PERFECT for kids, young kids geocaching with parents, or just the casual geocacher. It's incredibly easy to use (my 5 year old wears it & tells me the direction to go) and tons of fun without all the hassle or large expense. I really like the nice big strap to wear around the neck and the ruggedness of the rubber shell around it.

I bought this product for my children and I to have some fun, only we never did. It could not pick up a signal in trees, on top of a mountain, or at the Oregon Coast. I would say 90% of the times we attempted to use it, it could not get a reading. "Find clear sky" the screen kept flashing. I returned it. For the price point I was extremely dissapointed.

I purchased 10 of these units for a local scout encampment to run the geocaching course. (I also purchased 10 Garmin etrex venture HC's for the same event). For geocaching, this couldn't have been easier. I used the update feature available through the website to setup the private caches - after acquiring coordinates with the etrex. We had multiple scouts running the course. The geomate.jr was very easy to instruct with and got the scouts out and moving very quickly. I have also setup a private cache hunt for a birthday party as well as used it for general geocaching. I find that this is the first unit I reach for to geocache - as the convenience is great.

For hiking purposes, marking your origin point with 'home' and then using the unit in an emergency to get you back to that point is helpful. The unit will also display your current coordinates with a couple of button presses, so using it with a current topo is nice too.

For geocaching, it's perfect for all ages. The kids love it, and have had no problems just figuring out how it works. I occasionally have to go to my phone to look up a cache for additional info (if we're having trouble finding), but I would've had to do the same with a regular basic gps unit.

Cons - You can't enter in manual waypoints in the field. The screen has no backlight feature, so a flashlight is necessary at night.

This Geocaching unit is easy and simple to use once you get to know how to use it correctly. It finds 20 caches around your present area that you are at and you can choose which one you wish to find. It's a basic Geocaching device and gets straight to the point to find the cache you are finding. It's not 100% accurate on the exact location of the cache but when it reaches 15 to 0 feet, walk and look in the area and it should be there. Once you found it, store the cache code that you found and log it on GeoCaching.com.
When I first turn on my unit it can take a while to get a satellite signal. Once it gets a signal your unit is ready to go.
Just some quick tips: If you tend to move to different locations while you are caching, turn your unit off and on so it will find the most recent and closest cache that's available. If you are unfamiliar with your surroundings before you head for your cache, use your Home button so you will know how to get back to your car or where you first started from. It's also best to keep 2 spare batteries just in-case your batteries will die while you are finding a cache. It's also best to invest in the upgrade plug so you can update the recent caches around your area.
I really love this little Geocaching device and completely recommend this for anyone who like to have a fun and to enjoy this exciting and addicting hobby. Anyone can use it because it's so simple to use. It does all the homework for you and will find the caches in any location you are at. All I can say about this unit it worth my investment and I am hooked on this hobby. Get One and you'll have a Blast with it.
