Comments about REI Taped Mittens:
These are fantastic! I've been looking for a pair of quality waterproof gloves. During the winter months, my hands never stay warm enough due to wet, soaked-through gloves. These are COMPLETELY waterproof. I tested them out by submerging them underwater for about 30 seconds. Not a drop passed through these mittens. I picked up some inexpensive thinsulate liners for cold weather, as these are only the outer, waterproof shell. I have smaller hands for a female and the size XS works perfectly with a liner (without liners, they're a bit roomy and actually fit my husband's hands better, however I bought them to use solely as warm weather mittens).

Comments about REI Taped Mittens:
I was expecting no issues with these after reading the other reviews, but I found them to be no more than water resistant. I used them as shells over other insulating gloves on the Appalachian Trail this weekend. It varied between rain, sleet and snow all day Saturday and within just a couple hours, these mittens had completed wetted out and leaked through to the gloves underneath, soaking them. In those temperatures (upper 20s, low 30s), having my hands get soaked was a nightmare.
They held up decently in snow, so I'm sure they'd be fine for skiing and snowboarding, but once the rain and sleet hit, they did not hold up whatsoever. If you need to rely on these keeping your hands dry in the backcountry, look elsewhere. I was really hoping these would be great multi-purpose shells that could be used alone in warmer, wet temps and paired with an insulating base glove or mitten when temps dropped, but that was not to be.

Comments about REI Taped Mittens:
THese mittens from REI are exactly what they are described as: Waterproof shells.
I did buy these when they were marked down. For the money that I spent, I got a mitten system which I can use in all conditions but the very coldest. Use the mitts by themselves for simple, waterproof protect. I also have several different liners for varying temperatures. Over a year of use as an outdoor professional, the mitts have been more durable than I would have thought and are still waterproof.
buy these and some liners and you will not need any other mitts here in the northwest.

Comments about REI Taped Mittens:
I ordered these to wear as part of my layering system for snowshoeing and downhill skiing. The nice part about them is how you can adjust for varying temps. by changing your insulating layer. So far they have proven to be completely waterproof. I wore these last week during an ice climbing lesson and melting ice never saturated the mittens. The only trouble I had was with sizing. I normally wear a medium glove / mitten, but the mediums were way to big for me, even with a pair of quality wool mittens underneath. I sent them back and the smalls are perfect. Overall, great shells!

Comments about REI Taped Mittens:
These shells are as advertised and I have recommended them to friends. The only drawback is that they are not very breathable, which may make it seem like the mittens are not waterproof if you're working hard and sweating. I wear them with The North Face Denali fleece gloves as an inner layer and it works fine in cold, wet conditions. Field tested at least 46 times over the last two ski seasons...

Comments about REI Taped Mittens:
I wear these mitten shells snowboarding with a pair of swix lobster mitts under. Even in below zero conditions my fingers never ever get cold.
These are a must for any snowboarder. I mean they never get cold
