Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
It took me years and years to find a long, down coat like this that was warm AND fashionable! I feel feminine in it. Nice cut and it has a drawstring at the waist for even more of a contour. Super soft and lightweight. I go hoodless but the hood is actually attractive. I am thrilled with my purchase since it is tough to keep me warm. So far I have tried it up to 10 below with even colder windchiils. I am 5'8" tall 135 lbs and the medium fits perfectly. Note, I have the white, it is more creamy than the picture and it is very nice.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
This coat is perfect for really cold climates but doesn't weigh you down on milder days. It is really lightweight, very warm, and comfortable with soft fuzzy fleece on the inside. Plus it's cute and can be adjusted to have the fake fur lining removed should that go out of style. I also love the length because with a windchill, my thighs stay warm as well.
My only complaint is that the product details state that there are thumbholes in the sleeve openings, when in my coat there are none.
I definitely recommend this coat to all!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
Recently, I've become much more attuned to the design of everyday products. Also recently, I've moved to Michigan, my first foray into a truly cold climate. I shopped for a parka before I came, and had two criteria: 1. warm, 2. not ugly. I ended up with the Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat in White.
Now that I've had occasion to wear the coat, I marvel at how well designed it is every time I put it on. The top portion of the coat is lined with the softest fleecy material, and has the option to cinch at the waist to prevent draft. The cuffs have an inner layer that is soft and stretchy to form to your wrist and also prevent cold air creeping up the sleeves. The top of the zipper is covered with soft fabric so that when the jacket is fully zipped, the cold and rough zipper does not sit against your skin. The zipper pulls are rubbery and easy to grip with big mittens on. The hood is removable, and so is the fur trim. They may sound like small, obvious details when I explain them, but the jacket is so clearly designed with all of the (literal) touch points in mind. Nice work, Mountain Hardwear!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
I wanted a seriously warm jacket for my commute - a couple of times a week I walk the 3 miles to work. This coat keeps me warm in 20 degree weather. In the wind. It feels like wearing a very warm cloud. I tried it on at my local REI, and compared it with the several other jackets. The North Face Metropolis did not measure up -- it just isn't as warm and didn't give me the luxurious feel that this coat gives me. Fit notes: I'm 5'7", 36C, 28" waist -- the medium fits very well (just enough room for a bulky sweater underneath.) Lengthwise, it hits about 2/3rds of the way down my thigh. I was surprised at how cute the coat is on -- the internal drawstring allows for a little bit of curve hugging. My husband loves it. I know I'm gushing, but I've been trying to find a REAL down coat that doesn't make me look like the Michellin man for a long time!

I bought this coat because I travel a lot to the northern climate during the coldest months of the year. This coat is so easy to wear and pack. Super light weight, keeps you warm but you don't sweat as you run through the airport!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
I use this coat for general winter duty. Wear it to work, for errands, to the ski trails, etc. I live in a major snow belt, and we get some pretty intense winter weather. This coat is intended for blizzard-duty.
I love how soft this is. The inner fleece is great, too (although it isn't against your skin, so I'm not sure how much it matters). The neck is great - it zips up high under my chin, and doesn't leave a gap for cold air to sneak in. I don't wear a scarf, but I don't think one would fit inside the collar. The sleeve length is a little on the long side, which I like. I've seen a lot of references to the lack of thumb loops, but I'm really not sure how they would help - it seems fine without them, to me. Overall, the coat fits close, which I think will help it trap warm air and not scoop in cold air. The hood is wonderful - it fits close, without being restrictive - stands up to big wind gusts. Love the Espresso color (it is the darker of the two browns I've seen when looking at this coat on different websites - at least that is what I got).
The length is as advertised - I wish it were longer (knee length), but couldn't find a coat with all the features I wanted. I tried the MH side by side with the Marmot Montreaux, and expected to buy that, but overall, the Marmot seemed like it would allow a lot of cold air in (VERY big neck opening, big, floppy hood, thinner, less sturdy zipper, etc). I wanted to try the Chelsea, for something more windproof, but couldn't find one to examine in a store.
The Downtown coat has a few small weak points. 1) I'm not sure how durable the soft fabric will be. So far, so good, but I sometimes wish it had a little more structure to it. 2) The zipper doesn't have any sort of flap over the end, so I find it scraping on the bottom of my chin, so I fiddle with it a lot. It does have a fleece chin guard on the inside, but it's the actual end of the zipper at the top. 3) Again, I wish it were 3-6" longer. 4) I'd prefer it if it had more down fill. It seems to have more than any of the others I tried, and it's been very warm and cozy so far, but this isn't really a standing-around-in-the-cold-all-day coat. I just could not find a long coat with as much fill as I was hoping. I did size up to a large (typically a medium in MH stuff), so my down sweater should fit underneath in a emergency.
I haven't been able to try it in really frigid weather, but I tested it at 14 degrees with 40 mph wind gusts, and didn't notice the wind at all. I was concerned, since some reviewers said it didn't do well in wind. I've also worn it at 5 degrees F, and it did fine. Once again, not standing around all day.
Overall, I love this thing.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
Being determIned to stay warm this year at home and on trips with unforgiving bitter cold, I obsessed over which down jacket to buy. I just got mine yesterday and am so happy with my choice. I'm 5'2" with a muscular but petite frame and a wide back. If coats are too small in the back I "no can do" cause one lunge forward and I'm busting the back like the incredible hulk. Otherwise my limbs and trunk are fairly proportioned, besides somewhat of a short waist. I ordered a size small and she fits perfectly with a t-shirt and fleece jacket underneath. The coat hits 2" above my knee and its like wearing a down blanket. Totally flattering with a feminine shape that does not box you out at all. The fleece lining is so silky warm and I can't imagine how a person could tolerate more than 2 layers underneath without overheating. Its so soft and light so you don't need a Sherpa to get around town. Im usually one to order browns, but got this one in black and am very pleased with the choice; its sharp. I normally can't be bothered to write reviews but was so excited about how nice this coat is that I had to shout out about it. I hate being cold!!! Now I don't have to be...:)

I am never cold in this amazing coat. The only reason I say it doesn't fit in the sleeves is because I have insanely long arms and no sleeves fit me... pretty much ever. But this coat comes very close. Good job mountain hardwear.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
I don't normally take the time to write product reviews (although I always read them), but this jacket is worth the time to let others know how great is it. I've already convinced several other women to buy it after they saw me wearing it. My favorite things about it are that (a) it's warm! (b) it's comfortable (c) it's lightweight and (d) it's stylish! I live in Wisconsin and walk/bike/bus everywhere, so this coat was essential when I was walking by the lake in -30 degrees windchill. Bottom line: if you're thinking about getting this jacket, go for it. You won't regret it. Also, MH guarantees all their products, so when I got a little rip in the chest area, I temporarily patched it with some sleeping bag tape, then sent it to MH in the summer and they fixed it for a very reasonable price (about $30) with free insured shipping both ways.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat - Women's:
I bought last year's version of this coat and was debating on whether to get a M or a S as I am 5'6", 130. The S fit me very nicely, but the sleeves were just an inch on the short side, however, the M was a bit too big, so I opted to go for the small and wear long gloves.
Overall, the coat has been phenomenal, even with the bitterly cold temps, I still feel very comfortable and could spend quite a bit of time outdoors in nasty negative degree temps. The faux fur on the hood looks good and IS purposeful, as it has helped keep the snow off my face during pretty bad snow storms as well.
My only quip with this coat is that it doesn't breathe well, but I'm thinking that would probably sacrifice how warm this coat is. Otherwise, it's probably the best investment I've made for cold weather.
