Used these pants on a 4 day Ibe Climbing Trip to Ouray. Wore them every day with light / medium weight thermals in temps begining the morning in the 20's and ending the day mid 30's. Mostly light to moderate winds. Found them a perfect weight for the application, kept me warm and dry.

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

I was in a pinch before a climb of Mt. Rainier when I picked these up. I've used them for mountaineering, skiing, and even cycling when it rains (ankles rolled up for cycling).

These pants can handle all weather. They are an excellent, comfortable shell, and are easy to fit. The mid-calf zipper with a button at the ankle makes fitting them snugly over your boots easy. Pull tights all around perfect the fit. My other shell gear is top shelf, brand-name, but these pants hold their own in keeping me dry all around. Seeing other much more expensive, pants, I can't imagine the benefit they could possibly give me over the Taku.

Simply put, in my winter pursuits, my pants are not an issue since I bought these.

The material is soft and strechy, and fitted over plastic boots I've already got a couple of small tears. I don't know how they'd hold up with a lot of scratching and scraping, they seem as tough as a pair of swim shorts.

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

The Taku pants kept me comfortable and dry on a 5 day backpacking trip on Mt. Kenya. The zip vents kept me cool Velcro/elastic waist band adjusted easily to accommodated under-layers. If you want all-weather pants that are comfortable, you can't do better than the Taku. I only wish they had heavy duty fabric at the knees and ankles and maybe seat. So far, no holes or wear apparent. But I would feel better if the high wear areas were reinforced.

Bought these pants when I was in the U.S. over the summer. Used them on a 5 day backpacking trip up Mt. Kenya. I wore them almost continuously. They were comfortable and dry. Kept out water and wind. After a hard trip they still seem like new. Will they do the trick trip after trip? I don't see why not. Note: I'm 6'5" and these pants could be an inch longer. Bought the longest REI had to offer.

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

I bought these for a month long mountaineering course in the North Cascades. But they proved to be problematic when putting them on with boots. The bottom opening is not even close enough to being big enough to put them on with tennis shoes, much less mountaineering boots. This is a big flaw for my uses. Also, you may want to size up in the waist if you plan on wearing layers underneath, especially because its got that cool tightening feature for when you need them tighter.

But in general, they look sweet, are super comfortable, and plenty long in the inseam, which is awesome. I just wish they had a full or 3/4 length zip instead of just to the ankle.

All this saying I have not wore them outside at all and I will be returning them, most likely for the Arc'teryx B eta AR pants.

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

I am still in awe of how well these pants perform. I spent 6 months living in a tent working in Alaska doing trail work. These pants made my life a lot easier and more comfortable. I gave up wearing my carhartts and pretty much wore these pants almost everyday for 6 months. While other people were either soaked or scrambling to put on rain pants, I was neither. I worked in pouring rain for hours upon hours and they held true to their waterproofing and when it got to hot I opend the thigh vents. I find them to be invincible. One day I stabbed my leg by accident while working and while I was bleeding under the pants, the pants didn't even have a sratch or a tear. I still don't understand why they weren't cut. I used these as my main shell when snowboarding or hiking in winter weather. I just wore a pair of thicker thermals underneath and I was perfectly fine. An example of their amazing feats would be when I decided to climb a ridge line and the snow got too deep, so I turned around and slid down the mountain on my butt. My thermals were still dry and the pants dried within minutes.
Although I've been raving about these pants there are a few things that I would change. Even though they kind of have built in gaiters there isnt a way to attach them to your boot so they really dont work. Another possible feature would be to have a bit of mesh that covers the gaping hole in the thigh. If you are in the snow and need to open them, it's possible snow will come pouring in. Especially if you forget that you opened them. Other than that they have lived up to my expectations and are worth every penny!!

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

These are the best pants I believe can be had for under $200. I purchased these for use cross country skiing, hiking over rugged terrain that requires extreme leg movement/flexibility, and winter backpacking. The fit is somewhat snug, but true to size. The flexibility offered by the fabric is excellent. These pants wear like a softshell, but are waterproof. I have only used them for 15miles skiing, one three-day backpacking trip, and one dayhike, but am confident that these are well worth their price. I cannot comment on durability over extended use, but they seem to be of excellent quality.I can only note the following shortcomings...- There is no way to secure the pant to a boot. This is a feature on all the snowboarding pants I've had, and I find it very helpful when hiking through deep snow. I will be adding this feature to my pair.- There is no zipper access form the side to get through the pant at the hip. I enjoy this feature to get at any pockets under the snow pants.- umm...that's it.I am extremely satisfied with this product.

Fit great. Not baggy like alot of winter pants. Wore on a recent backpacking trip in the presidential range, New Hampshire. -18degrees with moderate winds. These pants put up with miles of snowshoeing and the coldest weather I've experienced. FLAWLESS! REI is not paying their designers enough.

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

Nine months ago, I made the following 'review' somewhere; I can't recall the website.

"I've worn this jacket every day since I purchased it two months ago, it's been run in, hiked in, backpacked in, and slept in. It's been rained on, poured on, snowed on, stepped on (kids don't respect anything) and yes, showered on (I had owned my gear for almost a week; I couldn't wait any longer for it to rain!). Last weekend I attended a Search and Rescue Field Exercise in the Shenandoah Mountains; it was 35 degrees and rained the whole weekend, and I had a 35lb backpack on the whole time. We spent a good part of our time walking up and down the side of the mountain performing mock 'sweep searches' through the woods, pushing through thick brush and climbing around rocks and over trees. I thought for sure that the sticker bushes would destroy something, the Taku pants (and jacket) held up incredibly well. I definitely feel that I've made a solid purchase that I will enjoy for a long time to come!"

Now that I've owned my Taku Pants (and Jacket) for about a year now; I can honestly say, overall these pants have performed flawlessly. As an avid outdoorsman and a member of a mountain search and rescue team, I have put quite a few 'miles' on these pants if you will. Whatever the weather (Rain or Snow), whatever the task (Running, Backpacking, Hiking, Search & Rescue, Casual Wear), these pants have been up to the task and have proven themselves time and time again. If I'm not wearing them (which, isn't that often lately with all the rain and snow) I take them with me wherever I go. Purchasing my Taku gear has been one of the best gear investments I've ever made.

Also, it appears that at least two 'new' versions of these pants have been released in the past year, REI is constantly improving their products and trying to make them better, and that's awesome for those of you who are reading this review. You have the opportunity to purchase 'better versions' of the already awesome product what I currently own.

Comments about REI Taku Pants - Men's - 34" Inseam:

During the Blizzard of 2009 in the Washington, DC area, I wore these pants and they kept me dry and warm as a second layer. They appear to be well made and the draw string on cuffs is a real nice touch.
