Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

Here's the deal, bottom line - - This bag is good for general front-country type uses (car camping, visiting people, maybe a short hike/camp trip, etc), otherwise, invest in a down bag or a synthetic bag that is going to pack down better. This bag is BIG and doesn't compress very easy; heck, it barely fits in it's storage sack without a bit of a fight.

I specifically purchased this bag with the intent to use it in campgrounds, car camping, etc. I have a down bag that I use for backpacking [why beat the expensive, performanced based bag when you can get a fairly cheap, well made, warm synthetic?]

So, I say, know your intent of the bag. If you want a bag for front-country type usage...this bag will be great. If you're trying to backpack and save money....don't save it on this, it won't be beneficial for you.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

I had my polar pod with me on a trip to the Monterrey coast to do some field work. The first day out in the field area had been wet due to rain and rising tides and by the time that we called it a day we were soaked. The polar pod did a great job of warming me up after spending hours in the rain. I was very pleased with how quickly the bag become warm and toasty.

The main con that I discovered was that the bag didn't pack a small as I would have liked, i.e. I couldn't get it to fit in the sleeping bag compartment of my backpack. I'm going to get a compression sack and see how that works and I recommend the same to anyone who is considering buying this bag.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

This bag is extremely comfortable. It's soft and fits your body like a glove. I used this for cold camping in New England with temps dropping into the upper 20's and this bag held up very well. I'm sure that it can handle the 10-12 degrees Fahrenheit as indicated by the manufacturer and EN ratings.

The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it does pack large. But for what I use it for it's perfect. I pack a large tote with my Camp Dome 2 and REI Camp Bed 3.5 sleeping pad. The three make an excellent combo for a soloist. Anyone familiar with those products can tell I value I comfort over compact.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

My wife and I purchased these when we discovered our cheapo sleeping bags were insufficient when camping in Yellowstone and Glacier National Park in the early spring. These things are WARM. It was in the 30s and I had it unzipped at the bottom venting out the hot air. I feel the temp rating is accurate. My only gripe is that it is too large to pack in a small/medium backpack if I wanted too. Most of my hiking is day hikes, so it's not an issue for me. This is very versatile in that I can unzip the bottom of the bag and still keep it comfy. I don't regret my purchase.

I first used this bag on a late fall hike to the Enchantment Lakes. Our camp got rained & snowed on over the night soaking the foot of my bag. Regardless, I was kept plenty warm. For the price, the bag is tough to beat and measure up well with more expensive bags.

If you don't already have a compression sack, get a 25liter one; the bag is large.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

I haven't done any serious backpacking or winter camping in years, and I needed a bag to tent out while many friends were in cabins. This was absolutely the perfect purchase.

Yes, it's bulky. It's also probably too heavy to backpack with, but for car camping it was great.

I was looking for a good winter solution without paying through the nose for a lower weight I don't care about. With a bag liner this is especially comfortable and will certainly keep you warm. My favorite part of the sturdy construction is the draft tube along the zipper, which keeps you warm even if you're moving around in the bag while you sleep.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

This bag is great. Yes, it is a little large, you will always trade size for comfort. But if you get a compression stuff sack it will fit in most backpacks. I had this bag in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Western Maryland Mountains for back country camping trips and it worked great. I also winter camped with this bag and it got down the -5 one night and I didn't freeze. I wouldn't use it in summer as it is a little warm. But in freezing to moderately cold temperatures this bag is great, even in the back-country were ounces equal pounds. Perfect for car camping as well. And for the price its a really good deal.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

I ordered this bag on sale thinking it was a great steal. The other reviews were right. The bag is just too darn big and doesn't compress easily. It's warm and cozy, but I have a large pack, and it simply takes up too much room. So much that I would not be able to pack the rest of my gear in my 60 L pack when I go out trekking for 5-9 days. Such a disappointment. If you have a big pack, and you only plan to trek for a day or two, this bag is fine. If you need space for a 5-9 day trek, you're going to want to pass on this bag.

Comments about REI Polar Pod +10 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

Before purchasing this bag, I'd bought an Alps +20 bag from the REI-Outlet and used that in the backyard in mid-30's temps. I was on the verge of being chilled while wearing mid-weight thermals and a beanie in the bag so I started shopping for a lower temp-rated bag and this one looked like a great buy.

After delivery, seeing it in person, and comparing it to the Alps bag, this bag is THICK and HEAVY. Lots of loft and solidly built. I like how there's a heavier fabric along the zipper to reduce snagging and the neck baffles look really effective.

I've been waiting for another cold spell to test this out in the backyard, but in the meantime I did get into the bag in the house. That's when I discovered my shopping error. The shoulder girth is 62" (my Alps bag is 68") and I cannot zip the bag all the way up from the inside. The closest I can get the zipper is about 12" away from the hood (about armpit level). At that point, the zipper starts to contour in towards the hood and with my arms contorted to pull the zipper (I need both hands to do it) I'm putting so much outward pressure on the bag that the zipper won't close. I can get it closed if I put one arm outside the bag but then I can't get my arm back in afterward. And in that position, I got very claustrophobic feeling. Having the zipper get stuck when trying to open the bag back up added to my anxiety.

If I keep this, it will be solely for car camping in a tent and on a 36"-wide comfort pad where I'll have plenty of ground insulation and won't have to worry so much about closing the bag up tight. Probably will use it more like a blanket/comforter than a mummy bag. But that's OK with my style of sleeping too - I'm a belly sleeper with lots of tossing and turning. I DO like the thickness and the construction, it just doesn't fit me very well.

The other issue I have is with the shape of the hood - it just seems too shallow for me.

I've been interested in doing some lightweight backpacking and so I've just bought a Kelty Cosmic Down 20-degree bag here. It's wider at the shoulders, much lighter, and reflects heat back to me faster than this bag or my Alps bag. I like the Kelty one so much that I *might* return this one in exchange for the Kelty 0-degree down Cosmic bag.

So, I guess my recommendation is: be aware of your preferences for shoulder girth as well as bag length - I thought the long would fit me but it doesn't quite due to the snug cut in the girth.

Also, due to the stuff sack size and weight, I'd have to say this is far from ideal for even semi-minimalist style backpacking trips.

It's a good, well-made product, just be more aware than I was as to whether or not it will be good for you and your needs.

Would recommend to friends only after knowing their needs and thinking that this could accommodate them. To self: live and learn...

Too heavy and bulky. It is warm, but way to snug in the upper body. Be sure to check the stitching before buying. The first one I looked at the stitching was about to come out.
