I moved with my family of four, from the US to the Blue Mountains in Jamaica over a year ago. The day before I flew out of St. Louis I picked this up at the local REI store. I wanted a purifier that was easy to use if we were subject to a hurricane. After arriving in the mountains I realized that it was an hour drive to get purified water we started purifying between 12 and 24 liters a week. In the last year I have filtered over 600 liters with any hangups except that the whole in which you hang the dirty bag ripped. I drilled a whole in the plastic handle.Works great. Why didn't they design it that way in the first place? Great product!

Sawyer 2 liter: bad filter

Used one on backpacking trip only to filter good stream water 3 times. Backrinsed, dried and stored after the trip. Brought it out again 18 months later and filter is completely nonfunctional with impossibly slow flow rate. No excuse for the product failure.

Sweeeet Set Up!

After several months of endless research, I decided to go for this unit. The first thing I noticed out of the box is that Sawyer has taken care of the "bag tearing when hanging" issue. They have installed a solid grommet in the trouble area rather than having the material alone bear the weight. I bought it right before heading out on a short hike so I could try it out and see if it performed as advertised. It worked flawlessly. Now I have the trust to take it on my next camping trip. I will now be traveling about 8 pounds lighter due to not needing to pack in so much water(I hate boiling and cooling). I can't wait to see how it holds up in the long term. My only wish is that it came with some bags to put everything in. I got some really thick zip locks to keep everything separated and the inside of my pack dry after I use the unit.

comparison to MSR

I now have 5 trips into Sierras with friend. He has the MSR system, I have the Sawyer system so I can give real life/use comparison of the two. Of note, I adapted my Sawyer to directly fill my hydration bladder so I only need to carry the gray bag, filter and tubing. . . . . Both filters worked well. There were 2 practical differences between the two systems: the MSR bag was much easier to fill in shallow water. The Sawyer filter NEVER clogged whereas the MSR did a couple times. If I had it to do over again, I would buy just Sawyer filter system and a cheap hydration bag that opens on top ($10 on Amazon) . . . .this would be more convenient, cheaper.

Never had a pump...and never will

This is my first water treatment gear. I was uncertain about what to get but really liked idea of the gravity systems. I am very glad I chose the Sawyer. On a recent trip getting more water was as simple as dipping the dirty bag into the river and connecting the filter and clean bag. It worked flawlessly on ~8 liters. The tubes can kink if coiled to tight, but I have not noticed this affecting performance. Another reason I chose the Sawyer is it's usefulness in emergency situations at home to filter bad tap water of other emergency sources in a disaster.

I love it

I bought this years ago, really years ago and still using it. It works, it's fast and down right simple! I also use it for Wilderness Search and Rescue in VA and when I take groups of people out hiking. I love it because I can clean water without any hard work. I would love to see them redesign the dirty water bladder to a dry bag style - would make it easy to get slow moving water that is only so deep. Cleaning it is simple and if flow rates are slow they include an adapter to flush out heavy metals, dirt, etc. Remember, if water is very dirty the flow rate will be slower than clear water. Also you back backwash it in the field too!

Excellent filter, one drawback

I chose the Sawyer filter for a combination backpacking/car camping trip across several national parks in the summer. I chose it primarily for its ease-of-use as a filter as well as the fact that you can convert it into a hydration pouch with by adding some parts (a bite valve and lock). The water filter part was terrific - color coded, easy to use and hook up, even quick to hold when there wasn't a good tree branch or gravity differential to let it run on its own. The water came out clean and tasty. I haven't tried backwashing the filter yet, although the instructions to do so are quite clear. The product had one major drawback, which is that when converted to a hydration pack using the enclosed tube, the tube continuously detached from the valve, causing water to fill the bottom of my day and overnight backpacks. After a few times I duct taped it, but there's no real reason why it couldn't have been put together more sturdily. It happened no matter how careful I was when placing the water pack into the backpack. I didn't mind purchasing the extra parts, either, but you should know it will be an extra 10 bucks or so on a $100 piece of equipment.

Great filter for the whole group

Amazing filter. Just got back from John Muir Wilderness and this filter was great for all 4 of us. We filled several canteens and camel bladders without a hitch. We used water both from clean and somewhat dirty sources and never got sick. Nice that you can fill the gray water bladder while the blue is being used. That means if you fill them both before bed, you will have 4 liters of water to wake up to. Also, when empty, it is very light. Because of its weight and how much water it produces without much work, I prefer it to all the 'pump' style filters. All-in-all, a great purchase.

My new favorite piece of equipment!

I bought this water filter system before my latest backpacking trip and was glad I did! I used to use a Katadyn Hiker Pro, but the pump handle busted on a prior trip. Now I can't imagine going back to any other filtration system. Before I went out on the trip I decided to modify the filter to eliminate the need for carrying three hydration bags (the two included with the Sawyer filter plus one for drinking out of). As you can see in the attached photo, I just connected the drinking hose from my CamelBak directly to the filter's output valve. I noticed a slight difference in how hard I had to suck to get water, but not enough of a difference to be burdensome. This modification reduced my load by 13 ounces. (Originally was a 16 oz filter system plus 7.4 oz CamelBak hydration bag, but my modification brought it all down to 10.4 oz.) Me and my hiking partner commented frequently throughout the trip how easy getting water became. It was no longer a chore of pumping water for ten minutes. We would simply swipe water out of a lake, hang the bag on a tree, and then just remove the bite valve whenever we needed to fill a water bottle. If you're looking for an easy-to-use filtration system that will last years, this is the right choice!

best filter ever

I used this on the appalachian trail I just carried the dirty bag and filter one hose coming out of the dirty bag. I filled 2 one liter water bottles and if I needed more I just kept it in the dirty bag for later giving me a 4 liter capacity. At one point had 8 people using it. never clogged never slowed down. Getting water into the bag from shallow standing water is a problem but the only problem and you just need a scoop of some sort takes time but why are you in a hurry? this is a great filter. I will be using this for years.

Very easy to use - Read This Review!

Look no further. The 2-liter dirty/2-liter clean system is a must for backpackers/hikers. 1-million gallon guarantee sells this thing, but purchase from REI just in-case. After much research, I purchased this system compared to any pumps, UV, etc. types out there. Product is made well. Would recommend for 2-4 people, though more is fine as long as you have a nice water supply. Quick connects on filter work directly with Camelbak brand products. Purchase the Sawyer or Camelbak quick disconnects for your bladders/either or is fine, they are the same. Recommend bringing a collapsible cup to help fill the pouches. Bags will collapse if shoved underwater + helps for stream water etc. Fast-fill using quick disconnects (purchased separately) straight into your bladder, saves lots of time & not needing to empty your pack on a day hike. Recommend purchasing an additional set of quick-disconnects to attach to "drinking hose" end piece. This helps if you have the clean full & want to fill directly into bladders that use this same component. Group of (4) we had a Katadyn Pro Pump / Katadyn Base Camp / & Sawyer 2-liter system. (Yes, way too many filters, but the Sawyer system was being tested on this trip.) Sawyer put both to shame because of flow & ease of use. Never ended up using the Pump, & Katadyn Base Camp sat empty for half the 7-day trip. It started to run slow on our 7-day trip, but back-flushed 1x and ran nicely for the remainder of the days. Be careful or know in advance that the screw on caps do not have any connecting elements so be careful not to lose them. Also, does not come with a carrying case for the field, but a storage bag worked fine to house all of the pieces. Overall, great product, & worth the cost because it is cheaper in the long run NOT needing to purchase an additional filter each year! Get it & you won't regret it. Also easy to fill Nalgene's or other water bottles for those that don't use hydration packs.
