Comments about Brunton Echo Pocket Scope - 7 x 18:
Got this out yesterday, has been in a box with other outdoor gear for a few months. Tried to turn and focus and could tell pieces were loose inside. Shook it around and sounded like nothing was connected inside, just a lot pieces rattling around. Took it apart and a couple pieces were broken - the magnifying crystal, as well as some of the black trim in front or behind it.
The construction of this product must be very poor if it couldn't withstand being in a box with other gear without breaking. That box has been moved several times but doesn't have heavy gear in it.

I find it nearly impossible to focus - very small change in focus position produces large change is actual focur so very difficult to find and keep the correct focus point

A sweet little monocular! I had originally purchased the REI monocular which probably has better optics but it was impossible to hold steady enough to actually use. I picked up this little gem and have been completely satisfied.

Comments about Brunton Echo Pocket Scope - 7 x 18:
This product is a "hit and miss." I'm a photographer (published photos on magazines and books) and am obsessive about optical quality--I shoot mostly Canon L professional lenses. I was not expecting great things from this monocular, but at least the product I tested inside the REI store worked. Purchased one and tested it outside...and noticed it was BLURRY looking at distant objects. Had NO SWEET spot. Went back and tried the display model, tried it outside, and it was much clearer than the one I bought. I asked the REI staff if I can exchange mine for the display and he said, Yes. The display model has a "sweet spot" in the center (about 25% of center)...okay, now I'm happy. Found one that isn't blurry at 25% of its center. TEST your monocular before you leave the store! Cheers.

Expensive for the quality, but I purchased because of the light weight. Optics are equivalent to those $15 dollar Baska binoculuars sold on sale at that other sports retailer that sells lower quality merchandise, since it's a monocular it should be less than $10 :).
CONS: significant barrel distortion and color fringing between dark and light objects. Clarity and contrast is below average. Focus is very touchy on distant objects. It will focus down to about 24" (but who cares?). The carrying case weighs almost as much as the monocular, so ultra-lighters might want to use something else for protecting it
PROS: Light weight.
SUMMARY: Below average optics, but very light and meets my basic requirements to see at distance. Overpriced for the quality

I wanted a monocular for casual use on canoe and backpack trips. It worked well in the store, but in the field it is difficult to focus and objects are fuzzy around the edges. It is useful for 'in the pinch' viewing of landscape features or distant objects. But, its not really useful for extended viewing, such as wildlife. Overall, I find my camera with its telephoto features performs better. So, this item is now in my pile of garage sale gear.

Comments about Brunton Echo Pocket Scope - 7 x 18:
I use it as a lightweight general purpose monocular. I wanted something tiny & light that feels solid enough for outdoor use. Finding this new for [$] and being able to try it in store sold me instantly. I could never imagine anyone complaining about the optical quality on this monocular: it's dirt cheap, but still actually looks good (for reference sake I'm more a photographer than outdoorsman and am used to spending $1000s for "good glass.")The only constructive criticism I could provide Brunton (why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars) would be- 1. offer an identical model that's submersibly waterproof lol2. Maybe on the waterproof model offer a tiny eyecup, tiny can be better than nothingbottomline: this thing's great at what it was designed to do and be.

I bought two of these inexpensive monoculars - my wife and I sea kayak and wanted optics that would fit in a chest pocket and not be lamented if dropped overboard. We both found the focusing to be aggravatingly difficult. The focus "sweet spot" is almost impossible to find, and coupled with the budget optics, we didn't get a bargain.
