I bought this light set on the recommendation of an REI employee. I don't normally ride at night but wanted lights to increase my visibility to drivers on overcast days. The rear light is amazingly powerful. It can be set for flashing or solid red. I use the flashing mode.

The front light can be set for low or high beam constant light or for flashing strobe white light. I use the flashing mode on overcast days. The problem I've encountered with this product is keeping the front flashing light on. I had to return the first set after three months because the flashing lights wouldn't stay on for more than 20 minutes. During the day there's no way to see if it's working except by putting my hand in front of it.

When I got the second set the flashing strobe would stay on for my entire two-hour rides but now will shut off after 30 or 40 minutes. I have not contacted the manufacturer but am considering returning this set as well and getting something else.

When I returned the first set to my REI store the employee who handled my return told me she'd had the same problem with her Planet Bike Blaze light set. It seems to have the potential for being an outstanding product but has not lived up to its promise.

The min. light power for use in commuting on the road at night is 10 Lux (recommended is 30 Lux or more) This light is a dim 6.8 Lux. I would not recommend this light for much more than off road rides or lighted greenways. Because of its dim nature cars on the road with you might not notice you among the other objects with much brighter lights.

The headlight has three settings. Low High and Flashing. Flashing is ideal for dusk to just dark so that traffic sees you. The low beam lighs the road perfectly and the high beam you could see going through a dark tunnel or underpass. The rear red flasher is light and provides better visibility than my old unit.
All in all the unit is well made and compact.
It's worth the few extra dollars over the next lower model for the brightness.

I use this set almost every time I ride. Many drivers in Texas seem to think cyclists only ride in hot, dry weather. When we're out in cold or wet weather we become invisible. This set allows me to be very visible. The rear light can be seen for nearly a mile. I think the mounts are easy to install and are sturdy. I don't normally ride at night but think the front light would work well but maybe not for regular night riders who might want a more powerful front light. The rear light would certainly work well at night. The one thing I have difficulty with is the rear light on/off switch which is on the bottom of the light. It's a bit hard to find and push in. Other than that, I think this is an efficient, durable set.

just to add a note on the durability:
Last night, I attached the rear light incorrectly so
when I went over a railroad track, the rear light
came off and landed on the pavement. The light came
apart but I gathered up the batteries and the top and
bottom halves. Everything went back together perfectly and the light still works great. Also, I noticed that the rear light has a gasket that
should keep water and dust out. I thought that
the light was a goner....but thanks to the quality
construction, it lived to light another day/night.

Loved both the headlight and the tail lamp. Both can be seen from a long distance and I'm totally impressed with how far the headlight casts its beam. However, after about 5 months of use the headlight starting shutting off intermittently. The only way I can get it to work is to take the lamp house off the body and reattach it. Then it works again but only until the first bump or so...and then it goes off. Great when it works but not reliable after a bit of use.

I love the visibility I get with this light set. Pedestrians always have to shield their eyes when they're walking toward me, which I take as a good thing. The light set was super-easy to install on my bike too. The only issue I have with it is that when the front light is on the first setting it creates interference with my bike computer (cateye strada). Maybe I have them too close together.
Excellent value and a great product.

Yesterday, I had an accident in my garage - Driving out of the garage, there was a slight hesitation of the car and then a bump up under the front wheel. My rear rack trunk (not attached) had fallen off my bike and under my car without my being aware of it. I opened it up to see the damage. The lens/battery cap of my Planet Bike light had popped off. I put it back on and pushed the "on" button. No worries - the light turned on. I declare this product one tough little light. Way to go Planet Bike!
