Comments about Necky Manitou Select 14 Kayak with Skeg:
I've had my Necky Manitou 14 for four years now. This was the first boat I'd purchased and after having several, I still prefer it to the others. Not wanting to break the bank, I purchased the least expensive type (poly-something or other) and really have no regrets for doing so. This boat has been in rivers several miles wide to the ocean surf (where as I've since learned from calling the company directly, I've taken the boat to it's technical limits...)
Entry and exit are extremely easy and with my nylon spray skirt,I do manage to keep almost all water out when heading out to sea. That being said, the cockpit opening is larger than I'd like for that one reason alone. Otherwise, it's perfect. I would also venture to say that if I was using a neoprene spray skirt and not nylon, it would do the job of stopping the cockpit from getting swamped. But again, I'm using the boat in ways it was not meant to be.
When the skeg is deployed, you can feel an immediate difference in how the boat starts tracking straight when you're traversing a strong side current. Initial and secondary stability are great and the only time I've ever gone swimming was when I was unable to correct the boats direction coming in the surf. That being said, with a 24" beam, I don't think it would be the best boat to try and learn how to roll. I've yet rolled the boat and will probably give it a try later this year. All in all, Necky has built an extremely reliable boat.

Comments about Necky Manitou Select 14 Kayak with Skeg:
I've had this kayak for about 3 months. I spent 8 months researching and renting/testing kayaks before purchasing. I decided on the Manitou 14 Select. I took a risk in buying before actually trying this particular kayak, but sometimes, that cannot be helped. However, I knew what I wanted in a kayak, where I would use it, how I would use it and the Manitou 14 Select seemed to fit the bill. And the reviews I found on-line certainly did not indicate any disappointment among previous purchasers.
I'm very happy. This is the best kayak I've paddled in my short "career." The 14' size is perfect for one person to cart. Not too heavy. I can get it on top of my car by myself, with a little grunting!
I'm 6'1", 175lbs. I have no problems fitting in this kayak. Plenty of room for my legs. I've adjusted the pedals nicely so my legs are snug against the thigh pads, but there's even more room to adjust the foot pedals for those who are even a bit taller.
This is a great day touring kayak. The seat is very comfortable. I don't mind the seat back at all. I like to paddle awhile, then sit back and float, taking in the scenery.
I haven't timed myself, but I can paddle quite fast and straight in this boat. Better than any recreational or day touring kayak I've tried.
I've only paddled on still lakes so far, but I'm anxious to take this down to the Texas coast on the new paddling trails around the coastal islands.
With a little more experience, I might find some things that I would improve. However, based on my research and trials so far, I had to give this kayak a 5-star rating for it's category.
