Comments about SPOT II Satellite GPS Messenger:
Purchased this for two reasons: 1) to let family/friends know where I am when I'm on my kayaking, backpacking, motorcycling and hunting trips, and 2) to have a way to request emergency help from family/friends or emergency services if needed. So far it's been great.
Had the SPOT I for awhile - it worked predictably, given the older GPS technology inside: my wife and daughter carried SPOT I on a 500+ mile scooter trip along the California coastal Highway 1. SPOT I reliably sent tracking information along the vast majority of the route, but lost connection during some of the trip.
I upgraded to SPOT II when it was released and have used it on several trips so far. Recently it worked great on a 450 mile dualsport motorcycle trip along the California coast, through redwoods, etc. SPOT II seemed to have better connectivity, is smaller and has a better user interface, especially as relates to use of the "Track" mode.
Our friends/family love the SPOT technology. They feel connected to the person carrying the SPOT and reassured when they can see where the user is. The "I'm OK" mode is great for quick check-ins. Most of the places we've used it have NO cellular coverage for the majority of the route, so the SPOT is great for that feeling of reassurance (and safety).
Have not tried the SOS feature yet (thankfully), but so far the vast majority of the SPOT messages have gotten through - probably close to 90%, I'd say. The "blank" areas where SPOT did not get through were predictable: under dense redwood cover while moving fast (motorcycle). I suspect if I really had wanted to make a connection I would have stopped and moved to an area of low foliage cover and waited the recommended 20minutes SPOT redundant message cycle.
This is NOT a GPS unit. We carry one also (as well as a cellphone sometimes). It's for emergencies, checking-in and keeping family/friends in touch with remote traveling loved-ones. It's especially nice for solo travelers (such as myself at times). Kayaking, hiking, hunting, remote fishing trips, motorcycle trips, etc.

Comments about SPOT II Satellite GPS Messenger:
I have had this for about a week. Purchased from REI. It has performed flawlessly. I never had the first unit, so I have no basis for comparison.
I have 100% message sending on it. It even tracked me under some very dense foliage. Feeling very confident in the Spot II so far.
Service and delivery comments:

Comments about SPOT II Satellite GPS Messenger:
Save your cell phone-use this product! Waterproof, easy to turn on. Used for almost a week, very nice case with secure clip & arm band included that is supposed to allow device to float for 10-15 minutes. Small size, about the size of a flip cell phone. Taken sea kayaking near Annapolis, MD and rolled with it on deck in salt water. Used while tree stand hunting under dense foliage in Fairfax, VA. Also tested in car traveling at 70 mph. Messages seem to all get through.
I set OK message and then my optional message says I finished and am packing my gear up-no need to use the cell phone, which I now leave in the car! My wife knows where I am and can estimate my arrival at home based upon my location.
Only complaint is about the time delay in getting messages out. Also, the tracking function is not worth buying for most users-I think you can upgrade later if you find you need it.

Comments about SPOT II Satellite GPS Messenger:
I had the original spot and loved it even though it had it's issues ( difficult reception in some terrain. I have only had this for a day but the reception, function and reliability is impressively improved. I would highly recommend getting this product!
