Comments about REI Chefware Stainless-Steel Java Press - 33 oz.:
I had wanted a coffee press for some time, but I did not want one that was made out of glass, due to the possibility of breakage. My wife got me this one as a gift from REI. She initially looked at one of the combination coffee-mug-and-press products. However, she decided against it because she thought the detachable bottom component would detach too easily.
This Stainless-Steel Java Press is big. For me, it can hold four cups of coffee, and that's more than enough for a day at work. The coffee is nice and tasty, and the bitterness is minimized by the "press" methodology. The press preserves the heat well for about an hour. As you may have deduced, I mostly use it at work. However, it is a solid unit, and I have taken it car-camping with no problems. It is nice to be able to brew some well-made coffee at the campsite.
The only minor issues that I would point out are these: First, the lock on the lid is a bit loose in the "CLOSE" position. I would not want to turn the unit on its side when it was full of coffee in this position; it would probably leak. Second, it has a little vent hole in the plastic housing on the bottom, and water can work its way into this hole if you immerse the unit for cleaning. The water can then be heard splashing around in the housing somewhere. It eventually dries out. I just won't immerse it any more.
I called it "heavy" in the list of cons, but that is only to indicate that it is too heavy for backpacking. For car-camping it is just fine.

Comments about REI Chefware Stainless-Steel Java Press - 33 oz.:
One of the first lines in the product description is that this is a well insulated press. This french press is not well insulated. The outside gets quite hot immediately. Though it is double walled it is not a vacuum sealed thermos and has vary poor insulation. If you just want a metal french press for durability it is fine but if you want it to be insulated buy a Nissan/Thermos french press. It is too bad that GSI cheaped out and didn't vacuum seal the two walls because the product minus this flaw is designed well. It has a nice handle and lid with a very nice silicone gasketed press. But because it won't keep coffee warm appreciably longer than a standard press I can't recommend this product.

Comments about REI Chefware Stainless-Steel Java Press - 33 oz.:
This press worked great until this week. So i got about 1.5 years out of it with almost everyday use. However, the press part broke. The screen is sandwiched between some plastic. The edges that snap the plastic onto the press broke off. It's not really fixable and am looking for another, probably try to find a more durable looking one.
Also, I was dissapointed that the GSI grinder did not fit this model. Seems silly that the company didn't make the companion products work with each other.
I guess for the money it was okay but I kind of expect outdoor stuff to hold up a little better.

What do you expect for [$]? Don't rip on this unit. Works great. Keeps the coffee hot. Presses the grounds well. I have no complaints other than it doesn't boil the water and grind the beans for me.
