Comments about Raleigh Detour Deluxe Bike - 2009:
I've had the chance to ride almost every kind of bike from an inexpensive Huffy to custom, hand built racing bikes (road and mountain) that my brother rode for Long Beach State. I'm definitely a consumer (and NOT a hardcore rider) who knows about bicycles. The Raleigh Detour Deluxe is a "commuter" bike that truly lives up to its hybrid classification: Like a road bike, it efficiently transfers energy from your legs to the wheels but, unlike a road bike, it is ridden in a much more comfortable position. Further, it is built like a mountain bike allowing for precise steering control, minus the knobby off-road tires that are a huge pain to pedal even on the smoothest of concrete.
My Detour's primary function is to replace my SUV that was totaled in April 2008, until I buy a nice econo-box. I do EVERYTHING in it: Go to work, buy groceries, do errands, etc. and it has been performing flawlessly. I work graveyard hours from 8 PM to 4:30 AM (driving to and from work IN THE DARK) and this particular bicycle is perfect for me.
I re-mounted my old rechargeable headlight and battery operated blinking red tail light from my previous bike but without any of my old concerns. The front hub of the Detour is a dynamo (technically speaking, it's a DC generator) that powers the front and rear lights. So, even if I forget to recharge my headlight, or the battery dies on my tail light, I still have lights that make me easier to be seen.
The factory utility rack is awesome. Most racks I've seen have a weight limit of 20 to 30 pounds. The Detour's has a limit of 25 kilograms which is a whopping 67 pounds! Normally, I just carry my lunch box but I once hauled a large box full of groceries. The only place I can't take it is the laundromat. I absolutely need a car for that trip.
The part of the bike I appreciate most is the disc brakes. I used to think disc brakes were frivolous items; a waste of money that bike gearheads installed to impress their friends. I've hauled a lot of stuff on bikes before (without disc brakes) and almost every time I had to come to a stop, I felt like a crash was inevitable. I have yet to experience that on my Detour. It literally stops on a dime. I'm actually thinking of buying a trailer. The low gears will allow me to get moving and the disc brakes will let me stop, so why not?
There was only one somewhat serious flaw I could find. The frame (top tube, down tube & seat tube) will NOT accommodate a U-lock. Not even my old, tiny Kryptonite will fit in the triangle of the frame. Don't misunderstand me: YOU CAN LOCK AND SECURE the Detour with a U-lock just fine you simply can't STORE a U-lock on your frame when you are riding.
I must point out; however, I'm 5'9" so I bought the Medium sized frame. You might be able to mount a U-lock holder within the frame if you buy the large or extra large frame. Also, I was able to remedy my problem by tying down my On Guard U-lock to the utility rack.
One last knit pick: As much as I LOVE this bike, I think it looks kind of ugly. Even though I HAVE received compliments from random cyclists on my Detour's "European good looks," I think it looks like an old man's bike. But that's probably just me.
While it may not win any road races and there is no way I'd ever take it off road, all in all, I believe this is a fantastic bicycle for commuters; an excellent value and worth every cent of the price tag.

Comments about Raleigh Detour Deluxe Bike - 2009:
This is a wonderful bike, perfectly designed for the urban commuter. Raleigh has been producing urban bikes for over a century now, and this is their answer to the 21th century; fully loaded with fenders, lights, heavy duty rear rack, quick release hubs (not mentioned in the specs) disc brakes that have already saved my butt a couple of times, and the best gear shifters I have ever used. This bike is a bargain- and contrary to the opinion of the first reviewer, IT IS NOT UGLY! IT IS A THING OF BEAUTY! I often receive compliments on its' looks. It has classic English style and charm, and only lacks an umbrella holder to be absolutely perfect. This bicycle is an outstanding bargain!
The rat-trap style pedals and adjustable seat post acommodate any type of shoe,so you can just hop on and ride- any where-any time-any way.
Buy this bike-and you won't be disapointed
