Comments about GSI Pinnacle Backpacker Cookset:
I treated myself to this setup after doing a lot of research (and taking advantage of REI's anniversary sale). We just put it to use this past weekend. So far, I'm more than happy with my decision.
What I like:
GSI put a lot of thought into this set. Every aspect was well thought out. The fry pan and pot cleaned up very well and cooked nicely on my Primus Yellowstone stove (note: the pot doesn't balance well with the handle extended if there's nothing in it). The cups/bowls were a perfect size for eating. I didn't use the strainer, but that plastic is tough as nails and the heat didn't effect it (warping, melting, etc.).
The best part? I can pack my Primus stove, a foot stand, a mugmate coffee filter all inside (which is a huge bonus when you're trying to pack a kayak). And, there is plenty more space inside the cups for spices, kitchen items, etc.
What I didn't like:
I ordered this online since our local REI doesn't carry this particular model but I was able to get the gist of it when comparing it to the Bugaboo. In-store, the wash basin holds the whole set together with a buckle. When I received the set, the wash basin connector was velcro (odd considering the box showed a buckle), which for my purposes is completely useless. Kayaking + sand & dirt + velcro = slow death. I had to contact GSI (call, emailing doesn't work) for a replacement wash basin with a buckle.
The jury is out:
I'm unsure about the durability of the fry pan. I expect it to hold up better than the lower end Bugaboo backpacker. It does scratch which could be the beginning of the end but we'll see how it holds up after repeated use. I didn't use the wash basin, but I assume it'll work just fine.
Overall:
Great value for a well thought out system. There is plenty of extra storage and let's face it, it's a very good looking system.

When I am hiking I like to prepare good meals for supper and breakfast. This cookware set makes it easy. The weight is good considering what you get and everything packs up nicely. I recently got my teenage son into backpacking and we take trips together every chance we get. This set is perfect for the two of us. Pot heat evenly and clean up easily with the great non-stick surface. Draining pasta is a breeze with the strainer built into the lid. Insulated cups and mugs work great and keep you drink good and warm on those cold mornings when coffee is a must. I even love the fact that the stuff sack doubles as a wash basin. I will be using this set for years to come.

Comments about GSI Pinnacle Backpacker Cookset:
We got this set after reading all the wonderful reviews. Although I don't care for the shape of the mugs and bowls, it makes up for it given that it all packs up nicely into the pot for transporting. The pot and skillet are non-stick which is awesome and they transmit heat very evenly. The strainer lid is great feature.
Now for the dissapointments... the plastic strainer lid is just that.. a strainer lid. Don't even think about using it as a lid when cooking popcorn or anything else- we did, thinking if we kept the flame low it would be ok. When the popcorn popped, the kernels melted little dents in the top of the lid. Would be really nice if the skillet would fit as a lid, but it does not- feel this is a design flaw as they could have very easily made the skillet a durable lid. I am trying to get in touch with GSI for a replacement strainer lid, but nothing on their webpage says anything about being able to get replacement parts.
The description says the carry bag serves as a wash basin--- my experience was that if I was super quick it would work.. but when I put water in mine it all drained out in about 20 seconds... there again, would not be all that hard to make the bag so it would hold water.
Overall this is a great set and I would recommend it as I have not found anything that packs up as nice. If GSI would just make a few design improvements, this set would get 5 stars.

I've loved my kit! I wanted one with a fry pan because if you go on an overnight why not pack a little extra and eat gourmet food?? I've loved! cleans easy. The first one I got had a crack in the one of the mugs but REI hooked me up! The pot doesn't poor water the best but with a careful hand you're good to go!

Comments about GSI Pinnacle Backpacker Cookset:
My husband and I used this as our only cooking system the 5 times we camped this summer. We used it in both car camping and backpacking situations. For backpacking this is perfect, super light weight and compact. I found if you get smaller spork utensils they fit easily into the cup along with a small bottle of cooking oil and spices so that was really nice as well to have it all in one container. I really enjoyed the sink in backpacking situations because it didn't add any weight or space but worked perfect for cleaning. For car camping I added an additional pan but that was out of convenience, we could have done easily without. The one thing that makes me regret buying this system as opposed to the next step up is the lack of an additional pan and plates, however in the long run for backpacking I probably wouldn't want the extra weight and for car camping we just slipped in plates in our kitchen packing.
Not sure of the durability yet, but after a season it is holding up good.

I took this kit on a 6 day, car camp/backpack in the Never Summer Wilderness. Myself and my teenage son were both in attendance. I was really impressed with the way that it preformed. It did everything very well, from frying bacon to gently simmering soup. I used it over propane and white gas at altitudes from 600 to 12,000 feet. I had my doubts about the frying pan when I saw it, but it actually held up very well frying up some awesome bacon. The kit also has a lot of well thought out details like a bright orange tab on the lid so you don't lose it and reflective logos on the sink so you can find it with your headlamp even though it is black. The bowls and mugs both have measuring graduations for both standard and metric. The handle was easy to use an functional with the same attention to detail as the rest of the kit. The insulated cups actually keep your beverage warm and slip inside the bowl snuggly for additional insulation, or for packing into the kit.
The only things that keep this from getting a perfect rating are that the main pot has no measuring graduations in it. I took out the auto center punch and made my own, but this is something that almost everyone does now. I wish the designers of the gear would catch on! The measuring graduations for the cups is hard to see from the outside of the cup. Also, under red or blue filtered light I can't tell the difference between the blue and the green cups. These need to be colors of a greater contrast instead of red neutral.
Other than that, it performed flawlessly. My hat is off to GSI for a great product.

Comments about GSI Pinnacle Backpacker Cookset:
Our family of four enjoyed this cookset on our backpacking trip. It has room to hold items in the cups such as my stove, matches, bandana (hot pad), etc. It isn't big enough to hold utensils, but they fit nicely in the carrying bag.
I love that the outside container doubles as a sink (also used it to prepare bread dough). I love that the two pans clean up very easily.
The pans are big enough to boil a lot of water, but that size makes them a bit unstable on our tiny stove.
Warning - the plastic strainer lid WILL MELT if you let the flames lick up the side of the pan (we rotated our pan to avoid burning our pizza dough). We completely melted the edges! Looking for a replacement now.
Otherwise, it's a great family sized cook set.
