I got one pair of these a few years ago and they are holding up nicely. So, I thought since I liked them so much, I'd get a few more pairs. That was the following year, and it appears REI -- just like they did with the Sausalito shirt (see my review there, as well) -- went cheap with the materials. And, it shows...big-time. I have maybe worn each pair 10 times, and now, the zippers -- not just on the fly, but on the watch pocket and side cargo pockets as well -- are all breaking like they're made from crystallized sugar. And, since the zippers are so small and the material's so cheap, if you try to fix it with a pair of pliers or something, it just breaks altogether.
I have been a big fan of REI for years, and continue to buy a lot of their products. But, they're really starting to fall short with their REI-labeled clothing. If you bought it 3 or 4 years ago, you're in good shape, probably. If you try to buy the same item from last year's collection, however, get ready to be extremely disappointed.
I'm writing this as I wear a pair of these pants at my office after my fly zipper broke...after my commute, at my office. Thanks, REI.
If anybody from REI is reading this, please consider improving some of the material quality in your clothing items. The disintegration of quality couldn't be more glaring over the last couple of years, and these pants are a fine example of that.

These pants are great. I bought them for a trip to Greece and ended up wearing them the whole 12 days (I did wash them, see pic). They fit right in hiking through the city and country and just as well in the fancier hotel we stayed at on the last leg of the trip.

Although I was originally super excited about these because of the pocket placement, I was quickly disappointed by the material quality. They weren't too comfy at first, but after a few months of wear and a couple times through the washer (they're pants, they have to be washed a bit more than shirts generally) they lost their luster and became little more than scratchy and super wrinkly.

I consider these the ultimate summer trousers for Texas heat. Originally purchased for travel, these are my favorite to wear to work in the hot months. Pockets aplenty for smart phone, book, reading glasses, keys, money clip, wallet, coins and contact lens solution. I find these pants should not be put in the dryer. Wash, then hang from a hanger in the bathroom to dry overnight.

Bottom line, this is a good pant. I bought it for a 16 day backpacking trek in Nepal. It was my only pair of pants (though I didn't wear them every day). It performed well with no major complaints. No rips, tears, or other breakdowns.I bought the dark grey 'shadown' pant at my local REI after reading some reviews online. It was one of the only brands to offer 34" length, which was a deal cincher for me. The fit is true. The feel of the fabric is nice and soft versus some cheaper pants (Sahara included). The fit is a great cross between roomy and classy. I feel as comfortable wearing this out to a nice dinner as I do hiking all day in it. The pockets are great, especially the dual hidden pockets. The zippered back pockets are a nice touch. The zippered fly feels cheap (not rugged) and flimsy, I'm hoping it doesn't break soon. I like that the pants are lightweight but not super thin. After hand washing them they would almost completely dry overnight. The gusseted crotch is also key.I had no major problems with the pant and would recommend them to anyone. The downsides are the price- [$] aint cheap. And I missed having a zipper or similar for the pant legs. I found myself wearing the pants less often because it is almost impossible to take these pants on/off with your shoes/boots on. Getting hot and sweaty and stuck in long pants is a hiker's nightmare.

These pants are great when hiking, backpacking, and even wearing to work! They are very comfortable when hiking in hot conditions and also warm enough to wear during summer evening backpacking trips. No stain has been able to stick so far which allows me to wear these pants any time for anything and not worry about ruining them.

Awesome pants and so comfortable and easy to wear and use. BUT, the achilles heel is that they almost seem to magnetize lint to them with reckless abandon. I have never seen pants grab on tightly to more loose debris. It's baffling! Even washing them, the debris just balls up on the surface but actually can't be pulled from the pants unless done manually :-O

It's hard for me to find pants that fit. I have very big legs and most 34"-36" lenght pants fit like spandex. If you need the leg room just buy a waist size a couple inches bigger than your waist and use a belt. Love the hidden zip close pockets. Great pants.

They Shrink!!
Bought a pair of 36-34 for my husband for his trip to Archaeological dig in Israel. Based on reviews here, bought 36 waist (bigger than his usual) and 34 length (his usual for jeans and Docker-style pants).
They fit in the waist, but were about 2" too long.
Exchanged the 36-34s for 36-32s, which fit in both waist and length (with all DH's pocket stuff).
Washed the pants and hung them up to dry. They are now about 1" TOO SHORT!!
They do have a small hem. When he gets back from his trip, I'll unstitch the 2 rows of stitching and make a smaller double-fold hem (more like a jeans hem). That should make them almost long enough.
