    • NOW PLAYING

From grocery getting to commuting, from the Four-Square tourney to picking up bacon-wrapped doughnuts on Saturday morning, the Swobo Dixon is a bike built for journeys through the urban scene.

    • Tough, lightweight 7005 aluminum frame thumbs its proverbial nose at the demanding conditions of urban riding
    • SRAM i-Motion 9-speed internal gear rear hub proffers a smooth range of gears to zip you through sketchy intersections, glide you through parks and spin you up hills
    • Shifting is a breeze with a simple turn of the twist shifter
    • Truvativ Isoflow crankset is outfitted with a chainguard and platform pedals so you don't have to wear uncomfortably tight pants or special shoes just to ride
    • Avid BB5 front and BB7 rear mechanical disc brakes ensure excellent stopping power in all weather conditions
    • Puncture-resistant Kenda Kwest tires deter morale-deflating flats; sturdy 36-hole Alex wheels stand up to tough urban terrain
    • Custom Swobo saddle, stem, handlebar, grips and other goodies round out the package
    • Other super-sweet features include a seatpost-integrated tail light and a locking front quick-release
    • Eyelets let you outfit your rig with fenders and rear rack (sold separately) for ultimate urban utility
    • Specs are subject to change

After an initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

    Comments about Swobo Dixon Bike:

I really, really wanted to like this bike. I liked the look of it, the fit was just right for me and I was excited to have fancy new hub gears. But.....after just a few days of commuting I was being driven crazy by the noise of the SRAM I-Motion 9 hub gear. I tried adjusting the tension on the cable (pretty much all you can do unless you're a qualified SRAM machanic) but with no luck. It was still just as noisy. After a little bit of asking around and investigating I found out that the noise is one of the downsides of this component. After spending quite a chunk of money on this bike, I was not prepared to put up with this problem, so to cut a long story short - the bike was returned. My next bike will not be either a Swobo or have hub gears.

    Comments about Swobo Dixon Bike:

I had to make sure that I didn't already write a review as "Matt from Boston" because he wrote exactly what I was thinking!

I actually didn't buy this from REI but need to express my extreme disappointment with this bicycle. I found it after shopping around for months, trying to find a bike with disc brakes and an internal hub that would fit me (I'm 5'2") without being ugly. I am not sure why the "internal hub" bee was in my bonnet, but I definitely wanted the disc brakes after one too many seasons of commuting through the rain.

I am not sure why I didn't notice at the time I was test-riding this bike, but it is LOUD. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK goes the hub. It's embarrassing. Perhaps it's because it makes more noise in the higher gears, and during my test-ride I stayed in gears 1-5? Which I find surprising, as the thing is geared in a way that I find myself in gears 6-9 90% of the time. The noise drives me insane.

I will say that this thing is built like a tank. I have hauled so much stuff on this bike it's ridiculous. I wouldn't say that I'm too hard on bikes (other than screwing with the shifting just because you CAN), but the streets of Oakland are no cake-walk. You will pay for this durability in weight, obviously. Compared to my old commuter bike (novara corsa) this bike feels sluggish, and frankly, not fun to ride. I am kicking myself for not buying it at REI, where I could have already RETURNED it. If you are unconvinced that this bike sucks, I will sell you mine for a steep discount (size small)!

    Comments about Swobo Dixon Bike:

I bought this bike to commute to work, and for that purpose, it's the perfect bike for me. The internal hub is great - I can shift gears at stoplights unlike my road bike - and the brakes work well, even in a downpour. I added a rack on the back to carry my stuff, a front and rear blinking light, and it's good to go. It's also cool looking and I get lots of compliments.

Things I don't like - I couldn't fix this bike if I had to because of the internal hub. It's heavy, which makes it a pain to carry up and down stairs in my house. And it's not very comfortable. Had to swap out the seat for one that didn't hurt my bum. And I've tried riding it further than my short commute, but my hands ache from the vibrations even with gloves.

Bottom line is that I like my bike a lot, and the pros outweigh the cons.

      Comments about Swobo Dixon Bike:

I have a garage full of all types of bikes and the Dixon gets off the hook the most. It's a hit at the local pubs and coffee shops ( I let friends ride it). The internal 9 speed hub works great and it operates exactly like the fine piece of German machinery it is. The spacing between the gears is perfect and the shifting is easy and accurate. Together with the mechanical disc brakes it is really a low maintenance machine. The alloy frame design is more than urban as it climbs great and descends fast smooth and stable and I mean fast. My only problem so far is that I wore out the rear tire. And most important feature is that it looks cool!

        Comments about Swobo Dixon Bike:

This bike had all the qualities I was looking for in a commuter - relatively lightweight, low maintenance internal gear hub, disc brakes, and puncture resistant tires. It's held up great for the past couple of years and has gotten several compliments on its styling.
