Comments about ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater +20 Sleeping Bag - Wide - Special Buy:

I absolutely love this bag! I'm a big guy (5'10", 310lbs at my peak), so I bought the "wide" version. It still weighs in under 3.5 pounds, and packs down pretty small, making it great for 3-season backpacking use (4 season if you have proper under-layers). The zipper baffle keeps me from getting that "yikes, that's cold" jolt when I roll over on the zipper, and the extra width means I can actually hike a knee up when I'm sleeping or put my socks on while still in the bag! And to top it off, it comes with a REAL stuff sack with REAL straps that don't rip off the first time you cinch them down!

My first time I used this bag it was 25 degrees and 15mph wind at night. The bag performed well, I was able to close the hood easily and stay warm.
    The zipper....well I haven't found a bag that has
a zipper that doesn't snag. Overall a keeper for me and plenty of room althought you might stuff a shirt or jacket in the bottom if the bag is to long.

Comments about ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater +20 Sleeping Bag - Wide - Special Buy:

This bag is great but don't expect to fit it back into the original compression sack it comes with. We go camping about once or twice a month and we were looking for items that we could take to a walk in site and be comfortable as well as take backpacking, knowing we couldn't afford the high tech backpacking equipment that packs super tight, we were settling for something in between. The size of the bag pulling it out of the box was expected. It was packed really tight and was hard to get out of the compression sack then, once unrolled, we tried to roll it up about 10 different ways and we had no hope of getting back in. Others may be able to, but we were done. Other than that it's really comfortable and roomy, I'm 6'3" and me and my small pit could actually fit. . .

Comments about ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater +20 Sleeping Bag - Wide - Special Buy:

I used this bag for the first time over a three day tent camping trip. Overnight lows were within the range of 20+ (48 degrees) and I was warm enough that I got out of the bag and slept on my insulated pad and the bag as a cover. Bag is very roomy for a 48" chest.
Purchasing another for my wife as her new bag would up too short for her.

Used this bag for a few winter camping nights with a 20 to 35F weather and I had to wear lot of sweater, socks and extra clothing to stay warm.
May be better to spend extra $ to get a better one.

I would only recommend it to a friend if it is for 35+ weather use.

Comments about ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater +20 Sleeping Bag - Wide - Special Buy:

I am usually comfortable in a sleeping bag down to at least 10ºF below what the bag is rated for. My first impression when I pulled this bag from its stuff sack was that the bag had very little loft and the insulation was suspiciously thin. I was chilly in this bag on a night that was only 30ºF. This bag would be more accurately rated at 40ºF, than at 20ºF.

I used this bag for hammock camping from my Dual Sport motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway this October. Rained all night and very strong wind. This bag did great. I wore some fleece pants and polypro top and was very warm all night. Bag some do do fine with moisture. This is one of the best bang for buck deals you will find out there.

Comments about ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater +20 Sleeping Bag - Wide - Special Buy:

Took this bag on a trip in February on the AT when temps were in the low single digits at night and we were exposed in a open face shelter. This bag held up like a champ. I slept with my clothes on and had my spare clothes in my bag for insulation and was warm considering it was about 4 degrees outside. The only thing I would recommend is getting a compression sack because the regular stuff sack left it quite bulky in my pack. Nothing a compression sack wont fix though. If you are going to be any colder than 0 degrees and you will need a bivy cover or some type of bag liner. For what this bag cost, you cant beat it with an icicle.

It is now 11-11-2010 and I have use this bag 8 times since 1-10-2010. It has performed very well(so well that all 3 of my kids now have this bag). My first outing was @ -2, yes minus 2 degrees fahrenheit. I used a fleece liner and layers and stayed warm. And @ 20-30 I stayed warm w/o liner. I also am hot natured. Overall the bag is amazing for the price!!! And YES it does stuff back into it's included compression sack. I have used it on several backpacking trips w/ my children in the Cohutta Wilderness and the AT. All four of us love this bag!!!
