Comments about Alps Mountaineering Denali 4500 Pack - Special Buy:
I was training for a 2 week expedition to the Alaska, the Wrangle Mt. St. Elias back country area. I had purchased the Denali 4500 about a month prior to my trip. I had been training with another pack and realized that it would not be big enough for the 2 week trip so I did more research and found the Denali 4500. The info from Alps showed that this pack would hold what I needed it to hold and had enough area for my needs. When I trained with this pack I loaded it with blankets and pillows and interspersed with weights to equal 50 pounds. It seemed to work well, until I packed it with all the gear that I was taking to Alaska. We went on a short 2 hour hike and when I returned and took the pack off, I noticed that a seam had popped and there was a small hole about ½ " long towards the bottom of the pack. When I checked the rest of the pack I found that almost all of the seams were opening. I panicked because I was leaving on my trip in 6 days (including Saturday and Sunday) and the pack that I had been training with was falling apart! I called REI who said that I could return it, or have it repaired. The REI person who repairs back packs told me that this is a very common problem with all of the Alps back packs and that the repair would most likely not hold. I exchanged this pack for an Osprey, which worked flawlessly.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Denali 4500 Pack - Special Buy:
I used this backpack while traveling, on camping trips as well as during training for Mt. Rainier. It's a good pack for the price and probably the best backpack from ALPS, but that doesn't make it the best in it's class.
During my travels, the backpack was comfortable enough that I could walk long distances. There is enough space to have a decent amount of gear for camping or overnight trips.
I also used it during my training, where I loaded the pack with 40 lbs or more. After all my trips (I may have loaded the pack 20+ times with more than 40 lbs), one of the shoulder straps broke - the threading on the top side came off. As one of the other reviews mentioned, this maybe a common problem with the design. I then returned the pack to REI for a refund.
If you need a versatile pack which is affordable and not for heavy loads (under 40 lbs), then it's a good buy. Otherwise, I would go for something else.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Denali 4500 Pack - Special Buy:
I bought this backpack before I moved to Denali. The Denali 4500, sounds like an Alaskan worthy backpack right? Wrong. I spent over 40 nights with this backpack and after about the first ten uses I found it ripping in critical seams (the side compression straps) On a ten mile hike in Denali I was adjusting one of the load lifters and the strap snapped. It snapped. What. Needless to say I was uncomfortable the rest of that trip until I was able to Jimmy rig the load lifter for the next trip. By the end of my backpacking days in Denali I loathed loading this backpack because I knew my shoulders would be uncomfortable due to the weak padding in the shoulder straps.
