The Alps Mountaineering Meramac 4 is a freestanding 4-person, 2-door tent—great for fun family camping trips!

  • Shockcorded fiberglass poles are 1 size larger than normal for added strength and sturdiness
  • Polyester taffeta body and fly are lightweight yet long lasting
  • Walls have been left uncoated so the tent can breathe under the urethane-coated fly, reducing condensation buildup
  • Center fly pole creates an awning over each door; full coverage rainfly ensures excellent rain protection
  • Factory-sealed seams on the floor and fly increase water repellency
  • 2 doors allow convenient, easy entry and exit, eliminating the need to crawl over others to get in and out

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent - Special Buy:

I bought this tent because I was looking for 4 person tent with two doors. The price, especially on sale, was pretty good but I was also a bit skeptical about the quality. We set up the tent in our living room and were pretty impressed with the dimensions but at the same time pretty unimpressed with the quality. Particularly the floor material and the rainfly were our biggest concerns. The floor was pretty much see-through and the rain fly was very difficult to install and did not nearly cover the doors. I could easily picture rain getting blown in by the wind. So we returned the tent to REI and settled for a considerably more expansive one from Kelty. We never put the Meramac to the test but the material just didn't seem right to take chances on. If you are camping under deal conditions with no rain and only a few times a year this might be a great tent for you - for us, it just wans't.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent - Special Buy:

The tent goes up in a flash with the quick connect hooks onto the poles. The fly is easy to set up as well. The one major draw back was insulation. We went camping at San Onofre (So. Cal.) in March, where the temperature only dropped down to about 40 at night. The inside of the tent did not seem to show any difference as compared to outside. We went camping with some friends and their tent was much better insulated. Overall, this tent did well for keeping the wind, bugs and moisture out and goes up quick, but doesn't provide much heat retention. Also, at 11 pounds, its a little heavier than other tents suited for backpacking. Don't know if you can beat the price, however, for a quote four person three season tent.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent - Special Buy:

I was a little skeptical about the quality of this tent given the large price difference compared to similar REI and Kelty tents, but knowing REI's flawless return policy I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did.

On the first night of my first outing with this tent we were greeted with thunderstorms and rain and even after a full night of that weather the tent stayed completely dry thanks to the rain fly and sealed floor seams.

My only minor complaint was that there didn't seem to be a footprint specifically made for this tent, but based on measurements I bought the Orion 4 footprint and it worked well as a substitute.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent - Special Buy:

I have the Meramac 6. Put it to its first real test last week in the high desert of the Nevada/Idaho border on a fishing trip. Needlesss to say, had about 24 hours of relatively high winds and rain blowing sideways.
All in all, this tent performed well and kept us dry. It proved to be quite sturdy given the high winds testing the strength of the poles.
