Comments about REI Desert Gaiters:
I actually have the 08 model that I bought on clearance, but they are basically the same as these. I use these primarily when tromping through long grass or other vegetation that has prickers, burrs, sticker, or any type of seeds that tend to get into your socks and shoes. With my hiking boots, I can go for hours, and not a thing gets through. With my Vans tennis shoes, they are not quite as good, but still keep out a LOT. They are also very useful when hiking on hillsides composed of loose dirt, sand or small rocks.
They weigh very little, so I just leave them in my day pack now, and get them out when ever I think I'll need them. The only thing I didn't like about them was that the chords on the bottom were a little short, but I modified it to work perfectly the first time I was out and decided to give them a go.
All in all I love these things even though I may look a little silly wearing them. They have already saved me hours of pulling prickers out of my socks.

Comments about REI Desert Gaiters:
I was tired of having trail debris getting stuck in my sock and hiking boots. When they got stuck in there either I'd have to take the boot and sock off and remove the debris or endure the irritation/annoyance for the rest of the hike. When I discovered these gaiters, I no longer had that issue.
Yes, gaiters do look a little weird. People ask me if I go wading or if I'm paranoid or ticks or poison oak. The dorkiness of wearing gaiters is totally outweighed by the benefits of having clean boots and socks.
I've been been wearing these desert gaiters at my summer camp job for the past few years. It does take a little extra time to put them on but it's worth it.
The only thing I'd consider changing about the gaiters is having the strings/cords a little longer. I'm afraid the knot I will tie will loosen and I'll lose the cord. This hasn't happened all these years though.

Comments about REI Desert Gaiters:
I bought these for spring and summer hiking on dusty trails. I primarily hike using a pair of lightweight trail runners.
These gaiters are very lightweight and probably do a good job with boots. However, they are ostensibly meant to be used in warm weather environments where most hikers do not wear water/dustproof hiking boots. If wearing trail runners, dust and sand penetrates the shoes directly, rendering the gaiters relatively useless. I ended up returning these.

Comments about REI Desert Gaiters:
After a spring and summer of heavy rains, my favorite hiking area, Lakewood's Green Mountain, grew massive weeds and brush, including a generous amount of burrs, stickers, thistle, etc., which crowded in on the trails. I'd get home with my socks, and inside my boots, filled with these scratchy, sharp and hooked buggers. They drove me nuts and were very uncomfortable. Thought I'd have to give up on my mountain until the drought returned.
Bought REI's Desert Gaiters (2009), and from the very first use, the problem was solved! These gaiters protected all of the important places - nothing caught on my socks or penetrated inside my boots.
Easy to put on and remove. Just adjust the length of the cords (once) to fit boot size and type, and tie a single square knot to maintain that length. The cords hook under just ahead of the heel, so they do not seem appropriate for flat sneakers that have no defined heel.
The gaiters are so lightweight that you don't know you have them on (except for lack of stickers daggering your ankles). They're flexible so that hiking uphill or down, they stay in place.
Nice product, and well worth the price.

Comments about REI Desert Gaiters:
Before I got these low gators I would get so many stickers in my socks that I would often throw them away instead of picking stickers out for however long that would take. I have used these gators now for over 3 years and they do a great job keeping out any particles that I come across and have yet to leak water even in heavey rains and running through mud puddles. I've had to re-lace the bottoms a few times from normal wear but there's nothing unusual about that. After 3 years of abuse they still perform like the day I bought them.

Comments about REI Desert Gaiters:
I hike in Colorado where the trails are either sandy or granite pea gravel. I was constantly getting stones in my mid-high boots. I got these gaiters 2 years ago and they prevent the stones in the shoe problem 100%, they dont make my feet hot and they wear like iron.
