Comments about Mammut Smart Belay Device:

I remember reading about it when it first came out and I was looking for an auto-locking belay device. It got great reviews, but it wasn't available at the time. I ended up getting a Gri-Gri as a gift and forgot about the Smart. Then on my weekly REI trip I saw it in the store. It was so inexpensive I had to buy it.

It was a little rough at the begining. The biggest problem I had was letting people down. I am quite small, and I belay people about 50 lbs heavier than me. The instructions tell you to pull out away from your body, which hurt my thumb. It would also occasionally slip back into the unlocked position and the rope would slide a little out of control.

However, once i got used to it, it was great. If you tilt it up a little, it eases the tension and lets the person down smoothly (at least as smoothe as my Gri-Gri). But it is much better than the Gri-Gri when it comes to lead belaying. All you need to do is grab the hook with the thumb of your break hand, and the rope slides through easily. Since you have to lift up to give out rope, instinctively pulling down to catch a fall will lock the device unlike other devices with similar designs. The only problems i had was at the begining when I forgot to hook my thumb.

I also like how light and small it is. I notice it like I do with my Gri-Gri. The only problem i had with it in this aspect is that it hooked onto a rope next to me (not that big of a deal).

Overall, once you get used to letting people down, this product is great. I use it instead of my Gri-Gri except for really thick ropes. Since it is less than half the price of a Gri-gri, I think it is definately worth getting.
