Comments about PacSafe VentureSafe Pack:
This bag is great! I have a bit of a bag fetish, I have about 6-7 Backpacks, believe it or not each one fills a niche, at least in my eyes. I bought this bag to use as a daypack for a month long backpacking trip in Europe. I wasn't able to see or try it before buyings, so I bought and shipped it free to my closest REI store. As soon as I took it out of the box I knew it was perfect. My Arc'teryx pack has a detachable day pack but for day long touring around town it wasn't enough especially holding camera gear and a little netbook.
I picked this up because of it's security features, the steel cabling, steel mesh, but most importantly the zippers. The way the zippers hide and clip are amazing. I don't leave the zippers clipped when I am using it around town here but when I am unaware of my surroundings in a crowded area I just clip the zippers and I feel so secure about no wandering hands creeping into my bag. The slash resistance is just and added bonus in my eyes. The organization of the pockets is perfect. It has good deep water bottle holders and pen pockets and place for a sketchbook. I put thin high-density foam around my lenses and at the bottom of the pack to protect my camera gear and turn it in to a little camera bag.
The only thing I would be critical of is the lack of a waist belt. When the sternum strap is clipped it holds the pack in place pretty well but it would have benefited from a small waist strap when scurrying over rocks or doing some light hiking. Not a huge negative because it is mostly a travel daypack but I noticed this while in the Caribbean. I used it not only around the town but as my daypack when hiking to remote, isolated beaches.
The number one reason it worked for me is the fact it has no internal frame and it is light. Since it has now become my dedicated travel pack I need it to fit in my big pack when I am not using it. It does just that. It is no where near as light and packable as an ultralight but it has 10 times the security.
One last thing to note is the durability. The stitching is great and just about everything on it is metal. The back padding is comfortable and very usable over the whole day.
