Comments about Osprey Grab Bag Accessory Pocket:

This is a nearly perfect product - more on that later...

I admit to being a die-hard Osprey fan. I've used their packs for backpacking for more years than I can remember. I'm currently carrying an Atmos 50 for backpacking and a Talon 22 for day-hikes, travel and around town. The Osprey Grab Bag is great for all of the above.

I recently did a 16-day tour of Ireland and used the Grab Bag with the Talon 22. It was a PERFECT combination. The Talon held snacks, "the essentials" gear, cold-weather & rain gear plus my Manfrotto tripod and fluid head.

The Grab Bag hangs across the chest at the perfect height (adjustable) to keep maps, tickets, sunglasses, pens, gum, anti-bacterial hand-cleaner, micro-fiber cleaning cloth and more right at hand. Would you believe that even with all this neatly organized within, there is still enough room for a Canon HF-11 compact HD video camera to tuck inside? Yeah, it may be a small bag, but because of the shape it holds vastly more stuff than you think it will. Most importantly, it's always right there within easy reach.

I use the Nite Ize #3 S-Biners on the Talon shoulder harnesses to clip things to whenever needed. When you release the Grab Bag buckle on the left side in order to take your backpack off, you can clip the loose end of the Grab Bag to the right shoulder harness so it's not flopping around. (See picture below)

There is only one flaw with the Grab Bag, and it's frustrating but easy to fix. The plastic buckles that attach it to the shoulder harness of your pack have slits in them to allow it to thread into your webbing. Unfortunately, the slits are wide and not well placed/designed and they come off easier than they go on. As another reviewer noted, they'll disappear quickly if you're not aware of this. I fixed it in the field (in Ireland) with small strips of tape to close off the slits. The buckles haven't moved since. This is a pretty big design issue because if the left-side buckle (not permanently attached) gets lost, the unit is useless.

Because of this design flaw, I have to give this product only 4 stars. Having fixed mine with tape, I'd give my personal Grab Bag 5 full stars for it's absolute perfect functionality!

Comments about Osprey Grab Bag Accessory Pocket:

Ever since micro four thirds camera came out a few years back, I've been trying to find a 'perfect' camera bag. It hasn't been easy. I've tried out many, most of them are designed for much bigger cameras, too bulky, too much padding, too hard to carry, or all of the above.

This grab bag from osprey is probably the best I've tried so far.

First, the size: I can easily put my Panasonic GF1 with the 14-45mm lens (lens hood reversed) into the main pouch, and leave my pancake 20mm lens and other accessories in a separate bag in my backpack. The pouch still has room for some small items such as tickets, lip balms, energy bars etc.

Second, flexibility: this pack can be worn in many different configurations. ideally its worn across your chest/stomach area, attaching diagonally from your right waist to left shoulder. When attached like this, the bag will hang slightly below your armpit, near your ribs, perfect place to keep the camera safe, and easy to access. Another useful configuration is to wear the bag like a waist pouch. This works great when you are going ultra light and don't want to bring a backpack.

Third, protection: This bag is very light weight, and while it's weather resistant, it's not waterproof. I don't feel save using this in rain. As for padding, the bag's not padded at all, so if you let the bag bang on something hard, your camera might not survive. Some care must be exercised when using this pack as a camera pouch.

Overall, while the pack doesn't offer much protection to the camera inside, due to its placement when worn, and its flexibility, I think its one of the best bag I've used when it comes to hauling a M4/3 on outings.

Comments about Osprey Grab Bag Accessory Pocket:

I wore this pack for nearly 3 months of walking with a backpack through France and Spain. I never figured out how to attach it conveniently to my pack to get it easily off and on, but wore it around my waist under my pack, where if fit surprisingly comfortably.
It was not waterproof and one very wet day everything in it got soaked through, but it was small enough to fit under my rain parka or poncho in downpours. When it got really wet, I put it inside my pack. I liked the security of having the buckle fasten inside the back of the pouch, and the fact that the zipper was covered by a flap. Security wasn't an issue when walking in the country, but in cities I felt the pouch was fairly secure. The main problem I had was that the zipper began tearing apart at the teeth, so close to the teeth that sewing it back together did not work. I don't think this should have happened, even though I tended to stuff it pretty full with a small camera, tissues, money and credit card, glasses, small notebook, pen. and sometimes a small folded map from a guidebook.
I agree with other comments about the easily lost buckle, which I ended up not using. More instructions with the pack on various ways to attach it would be good.

Comments about Osprey Grab Bag Accessory Pocket:

This is great on my Osprey React pack because it stabilizes and distributes weight more evenly, like a chest or waist strap, and that's exactly what I was looking for when I found this. It's convenient for quick access to things like my sunglasses, film cannisters, asthma inhalor, chapstick and tickets. One side is anchored to my right shoulder strap, and the left side clips easily. For all purposes it's like a permanent and secure extension of my backpack.

This also comes with a long strap to convert it into a waist pouch.

Comments about Osprey Grab Bag Accessory Pocket:

This works really well - it fits snugly against your body and is easy to undo to take the pack on and off. It would have been better if slightly larger (although the size is growing on me!). The main problem with this is that one of the buckles is attached to the main pack, which makes it easy to unclip, but if you put the main pack in a bus or on a plane without removing the buckle, it's gone. (Been there, done that. Trying to contact Osprey for a replacement ...!).

It's shower resistant but I would not trust this in a downpour because the front pocket is stretchy mesh and likely to soak up water.

I'd absolutely recommend for the type of trip where you want to be able to grab a phone, camera or small map/booklet for reference regularly without having to take off your pack - very useful.

Comments about Osprey Grab Bag Accessory Pocket:

Despite the minor flaw of the attachment buckle designs mentioned in previous reviews, a quick tape job in the field is an easy remedy. I was looking for a minimalist bag to carry around fly-fishing tackle in the backcountry, and this is by far and away the best item I have come across. The oval-esque patterning and the stretchable fabrics (outside pocket) are amazing at cramming a minimal (but thorough) amount of fly gear into a tiny bag that doesn't take up any space inside your pack. This includes a small fly box, tippet, leaders, tools, floatant, and even my reel. The only caveat is that I would recommend a rigid fly box, as there is only padding on one side. The straps are configurable as a hip pack, or a shoulder sling-depending on which you prefer. Furthermore, if you want to hike and fish at the same time (hint: Evolution meadow), the attachments to the pack straps keep it out of the way, but quickly accessible-it even has tabs that work perfectly to attach a retractor for nippers so you don't have to poke holes in the nylon. I can't believe this isn't sold in every fly shop in the US. I bought one for my fishing buddy immediately after the first time I used it. Absolutely brilliant.
