Comments about Sea to Summit Premium Silk Mummy Bag Liner with Hood:

I'm an adventure cyclist who typically rides through alpine passes on the way to extended tours through high desert regions in shoulder seasons. Accordingly, I decided a bag liner was probably the best way to keep the inside of my sleeping bag clear of all the "road grime" I typically pick up -- pitch, playa dust, dead bugs, blood, oily chain imprints, rainy road oil and the general dirt that comes from being outdoors on the bike all day. After all, it is far quicker, cheaper, and more convenient to wash a liner than it is a down bag. I wasn't looking for a liner to add warmth to my 0-degree bag, and I don't think this adds much compared to a fleece model.

All that is true, and this liner surely does keep the bag clean as I hoped. I chose it primarily because it was made of silk, extremely compressible, and weighed the least and packed the smallest of several liners I've tried. To keep it small and light, there is no side opening or closure of any kind; you crawl in and out of the top.

It is easy to wash out in a sink and air-dries surprisingly quickly.

The liner is generously cut at the middle--34" on my example--unlike some liners I've seen (use care to avoid snagging in your sleeping bag's zipper). At the same time, it packs down very small in the included zippered pouch, and is one of the lightest liners available. I wish the former stuff-sack style pouch was still available, as it is easy to catch the liner in the zippers on the current pouch and it takes longer to get the liner stuffed than before.

This liner has some drawbacks. The specs state it is 12" at the footbox. In fact, the foot of mine is an inset square, 9" on each side. I wear size 9 shoes, and I really can't place my legs more than an inch or so apart at the ankles. The liner is far narrower than the footbox of my sleeping bag, and unlike some MTS or CoolMax liners, the silk is not elastic or stretchy to any noticable degree.

The liner is measured flat, and a good part of its length and breadth are taken up when you're inside it. I'm 5'11", and found it to be 2-4" shorter than I'd like; it tends to fall off my shoulders in use. Mine measures 69.25" from foot to top at the chest, and the hood-flap is another 12.25" beyond that; 81.5" overall from foot to top. My liner weighs 97gr (3.4oz), the zippered pouch weighs 15gr (.53oz) and together they total 112g (3.93oz).

The bag is listed as having a hood, which I took to mean a real hood, as on my sleeping bag, with a tunneled cord and cord lock around the face and across the chest so I could close the liner when using it in the bag or alone on warm nights. In fact, the "hood" is simply a semi-circular extension of the lower part of the liner. There is an open-ended tunneled seam around the hood that might take a cord, but the hood-flap is not large enough to wrap over the head, so that won't work. At best, it will only keep the lower part of the sleeping bag's hood clean.

This liner picks up a strong static charge more quickly than others I've tried. As a result, it tends to "follow" your hands as you put them into the liner, and the liner tends to cling to you and "follow" your feet, turning wrong-side out as you exit. It makes for a pretty light show at night in your tent and some frustration as it sticks to everything.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a fully-realized silk mummy liner complete with a genuine, closable hood and my desired "just right" dimensions, but this seems to be as good as the competition in basic design and build quality, and better than some that use hook-loop fasteners to close (which snags clothing and, eventually, the silk liner itself). I don't think it adds much warmth, but does _feel_ warmer on contact with bare skin than the nylon lining my Marmot sleeping bag. It feels more like the ultralight lining on my REI Halo bag. Best of all, this liner is the smallest and lightest I've found, which makes it possible to take when both weight and bulk really matter.

Overall, this liner comes close in many ways but misses in some key areas where it could be really outstanding, making it just average for me.

The bottom rips out after just one use. I sent it back and they replaced it (grudgingly) and it happened with the second one also. We also have one that is not mummy shaped and have no problems with durability.

Comments about Sea to Summit Premium Silk Mummy Bag Liner with Hood:

This was a waste of money. I've used it on a few AT section hikes and winter hiking the grand canyon. I doesn't add any warmth to a sleeping bag. I was hoping it would add a few degrees to my 30* bag during a chilly night. I didn't notice a difference between when this liner was up to my chin or pushed down to my ankles. The liner is extremely thin, you can see through it, even both layers at once.

It is difficult to get in and out of. The bag is like a tube that has a head opening, without any side entry whatsoever so you have to enter via the head area and slink into it. As far as storing it goes, I have the version with the zipper storage pouch and the bag constantly is stuck in the zipper.

The only things I can say is this is lightweight and it does keep your bag clean if you can manage to get into the liner without tearing it or rolling around in your bag. I'd rather make my own liners from now on.

Comments about Sea to Summit Premium Silk Mummy Bag Liner with Hood:

Picked this guy up at a garage sale, it had a torn seam near the draw-cord. Five minutes under the sewing machine and it was better than ever. Just took it on a surf trip for 4 nights with temps from 65 to 84 degrees F, it was perfect by itself and the sand washed out super easy. Don't see it adding significant warmth in winter camping, but will keep the bag clean no doubt.
