This was recommended to me by a fellow backpacker. I've gotten accustomed to carrying several bottles of wine on my hikes (usually between two to four bottles over four to six days). This product works great. I stow it in a plastic bag to catch any leaks (only leaked once) and am careful how I pack it in my backpack so the lid doesn't unscrew itself. I always rinse and dry it when I get home, and I've never had a problem with residual wine smell.

Purchased in early July 2017 for a backpacking trip in Yosemite. The product did what it was supposed to do. Unfortunately I had higher expectations as I was comparing this to the now discontinued Clif Family Winery Climber Pouches. Those things were great... essentially great wine in a pouch designed for adventures like backpacking. It would have been ideal if the Platypus had hook loops for things like a rope or a caribeaner (much like the old Clif pouches used to have). Being able to tie a rope to the pouch would have allowed me to chill my beverage in the cool running river/ creek nearby.

Fantastic...just Fantastic.

This is a great product. Beat the hell out of carrying a Nalgene full of wine/liquor. I have been using this bladder for the past year, and I am pretty much settled I can't live without it. Hold a full bottle of your favorite wine perfectly. Preserves the flavor very well also. I use it now for Jack or "Kickin' Chicken" and it holds a complete bottle with enough room left over for about a cup of water to pour in for stretch purposes. Everyone I hike with now has one or is getting one. I'm sold this is one awesome product and plan on switching over the Platypus' water storage and eliminating all Nalgenes from my gear.

These are AWESOME!!!

I purchased 3 of these for a two night backpacking trip, and filled them with Cabernet Sauvignon so I could have some red wine with my dinners, and they worked flawlessly! They were easy to fill with a small funnel, I squeezed out the air and wallah, perfection! There were no leaks, the cap sealed tight, and the wine stayed fresh as if it was still in it's bottle but with out the bottle weight in my pack.

Leaks

Not sure about these other reviews that say their's didn't leak. Mine leaked. Luckily, I'd been worried about that, and, fearful of getting red wine all over my gear, put this wine pouch inside a Ziploc Freezer bag. Thank god I did! Although I double checked the lid, I decided to try it again at home, and see if it would leak again. Sure enough, it did. If you know that it's going to sit perfectly straight up, like on a shelf in your house, then you're good. Would not take this item backpacking.

Lightweight wine bottle!

My boyfriend and I love hiking (almost as much as we love a good bottle of red). Last time we went hiking we brought a glass bottle of wine and it was great! However, I thought it was pretty ridiculous how we spend hundreds of $$$ on "light weight" sleeping bags, pads, tents etc. And then bring this heavy, solid glass bottle with us. With this plastic bag we can now justify bringing wine with us. It does not leak, saves the flavor and cleans easily. Love it!

alternative idea...

Since some people are saying this leaks, and/or retains flavor, I have an alternative solution. Go to your liquor store, buy a 750ml bottle of spirits that comes in what Jim Beam used to call a 'lightweight traveller' bottle. Drink, decant or throw out the spirits, and then use the bottle for wine. I find they retain little odor, are the perfect size, naturally, and you can squeeze them to reduce or eliminate the head space. They are tough, and do not leak. I like whiskey, so that's what I buy, but I suppose vodka might leave less of an initial odor in the bottle. (I can't believe we used to hike in bottles and a corkscrew. This shaves off nearly a pound -- more for those super thick red wine bottles.)

Fabulous idea!

I recently hiked the lost coast trail with friends and one of them brought this along. It was great! Having a bottle of wine the first night on the trail was a fabulous luxury. I am normally a very lightweight backpacker (pack<20 lbs), but once the wine is gone this little number weights less than an ounce! Good for car camping or a picnic as well, since there is no glass to worry about. I loved this so much I went out and bought one for my next backpacking trip.

Nice idea but...

Thought this was a great idea for taking wine on camping trips to remote float/fly in places and avoid the extra weight of glass bottles in and out. The second time we used a bottle the seam separated -- not from over pressure or abuse, it just gave out as we were filling it. I agree with other reviews that these are hard to clean, especially after using it with some hearty red wines that have a bit of precipitate. I didn't expect to need to pre-filter my wine!

Retains Wine Flavor - Gross

After the first bottle of wine I have not been able to remove the residual wine flavor from this (yes, I did follow the instructions for "cleaning"). It was so bad that I tried to just use it as a light weight water bladder but after a day of hiking the water smelled and tasted just like the bladder smelled. Yuck!! IT GETS WORSE!!!!! I contacted Cascade Design asking for help and got NO RESPONSE!!!! I would NOT recommend this product.
