The Scott Spark 40 full-suspension mountain bike is a sturdy, lightweight build that's perfect for those that think there's little better than a cross-country trail taken at high speeds.

  • Hydroformed 6061 aluminum frame is impressively lightweight, featuring an optimized geometry and sealed aircraft bearings for world-class performance
  • RockShox Recon 335 suspension fork boasts 120mm of travel with both rebound adjustment and lockout; alloy steerer provides significant weight savings
  • Rock Shox Ario rear shock with rebound adjustment and Pop Loc remote lockout offers platform damping for improved efficiency and bump control
  • All-Shimano drivetrain features lots of the new SLX group and an XT rear derailleur for snappy shifts across the 11-32 cassette
  • Avid Juicy 3.5 hydraulic disc brakes ensure simple, effective finessing of your speed as well as outright stopping power
  • Alex XC-44 wheels are outfitted with Continental Mountain King tires, providing excellent traction and performance wherever the trail may lead
  • Scott seatpost, saddle, stem and handlebar offer reliable, comfortable operation
  • Other goodies include replaceable derailleur hanger and Shimano clipless pedals
  • Specs are subject to change

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Scott Spark 40 Mountain Bike - 2009:

I was attracted to the Spark because of the handlebar activated lockout. I test-rode nearly every brand of mountain bike and could not get over the pedal bob. I was told that I needed to refine my pedal stroke, but at 57 years old and tens of thousands of miles, my pedal stroke ain't gonna change.
After owning the Spark for a year - I'm pleased. I'm riding and racing better. The only problem I've had is trouble in keeping the brakes adjusted. I am considering adding a Joplin seatpost to improve my downhill performance. After a few over-the-handlebar crashes (and again I'm not going to change my riding style) I think the Joplin will be a wise choice.
