The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

I picked up these bad boys on clearance one summer because someone returned them because they rubbed their feet the wrong way...haha...i love these boots. The first trip i guided with these one i had to stand in a creek for 15 min helping my clients cross safely...with the help of my trusty gators my feet stayed toasty and dry. I use them for short weekend trips as well as guided trips. They are awesome with a bunch of gear in a heavy pack which is what they seem to be made for. However, when you don't have much gear on they can be pretty stiff for a day hike. Also, the sole is a bit narrow making them prefect for snow but walking on ice on the trail can be a bit treacherous. I think these are worth every penny.

This boot in and of itself is great! For most climbers this boot will suffice in very cold probably under 6500-7000 meter conditions. Crampons were a bit of a pain and laces were a strain. I used a winter mountianeering sock with it which worked great! They just weren't the right fit for alpining. My climbing partner had the Nepal Evo's and my feet were warmer with the same sock he had if that helps you decide.

Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
To be fair, I've had these boots for more than three years and they've held up to moderate use very well. The boots keep your feet very dry, but the leather absorbs and retains water, then freezes at night. In the morning, your feet are COLD for a long time.
I admit that my feet perspire a bit. To fix this problem, I wear a liner sock combined with a thick mountaineering sock. This practice keeps my feet comfortable, but the leather still seems to trap the wicked moisture that once again freezes at night.
I've used these boots for waterfall ice climbing and was very impressed with how well crampons fit, not to mention how well the boots climb 80-90 degree ice.
You MUST wear gators to keep out snow/ice and pebbles. The boot sticks to rock and edges well up to a grade of about 5.5 (I'm an average rock climber.) On near vertical ice the boot supports well, but after three full pitches my calves were on fire. The boot supports well and performs well above the average in all other mountaineering tasks.
If you are only able to get out on the weekends and maybe a week-long trip or two per year, then these boots are for you. Bottom line, the boots outperform their cost in all regards and are a superb value for the price. I had to give them three stars because of the water retention problem.

Bomber boot! I use them for ice climbing and they are the perfect combo of stiffness on the ice and flexibility on the hike in. I pretty much was climbing on running water and my feet were still dry. Great boot, to say the least.

These boots are extraordinary. I had the La sportiva Nepal Evo and thought they were well made, yet my feet suffered in them. Boots are very personal so that was simply an isolated experience. However, for a person with a low volume foot I do believe the lacing system on the Lowa is superior. It locks your heel more securely than any boot I have tried. The Lowa's are supremely comfortable and capable in the mountaineering environment.

Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
I have put quite a few miles into my Mountain Experts prior to my review and I have to say these boots are pretty darn good! I have yet to have water intrude through the boot and they stay warm throughout the course of the day. They remain comfortable even on the toughest days. The laces are a bit difficult and the boot did require a few miles of break-in time. The factory insole also had to go. I swapped in an orange Superfeet and they're much better. These are my go to boots for anything snow-ice related. They are a bit heavy but the warmth makes up for the weight

Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
Got these boots for potential use with crampons and off-trail mountaineering. They are made for the job, just not the right cut for my feet. I normally wear a size 11, but had to get a 11.5 to feel comfortable in the toe box, which seemed fine after months of break-in hiking. But when I did some conditioning work under the weight of a pack, I realized too much movement in the heel cup and subsequent heel blisters. No amount of breaking in will resolve the dilema. Although with liner socks and tape, I could manage, I need a boot comfortable enough to use as camp shoes, too.

Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
I bought these for winter backpacking/peak bagging in the Adirondacks. They run a bit tight - to comfortably get in two layers of socks I should have ordered size 11's, but got 10 1/2's for my size 10, medium volume feet. They're beautifully, sturdily built, well-padded around the foot with good wiggle room in the toe box and a very snug heel lock. In 10 degree temps on our six hour snow-shoe up Algonquin my toes definitely got chilly. Nothing dangerous. My buddy's toes in his Kofflach plastic boots were cold too, and we're both warm blooded. More sock might have warmed things up a bit, but as long as I can wiggle them back to warmth I figure it within suitable range. The laces are too long, which is a minor pain. A locking eyelet half-way up would help, but my chief complaint is the tongue. Its a half inch too short to completely avoid shin pressure from the top lace. And you must take great pains to push it flat as you cinch up to get them snug enough for decent ankle support. Even then I couldn't eliminate an unwanted pressure spot over one ankle, which may be from a fold in the leather, not enough padding or an anomaly of my own battered ankle. Bottom-line, these are extremely comfortable from the ankle down, with some minor comfort and support issues up top.

I bought these boots to climb Rainier which I did on August 24th. I hiked about 20 total miles in these boots before the climb to make sure there were no issues. I had no hot spots or blisters. I wanted to make sure that I didn't have to think about my feet on the climb. I wore these with silk liners and wool medium weight socks. These boots are very comfortable. I wear size 10.5 shoes but bought in size 11 and had no toe bang issues. I had to use a surgeons knot after the ankle lace and at the top. These boots are awesome!
