Comments about Osprey Kestrel 48 Pack:
The last reviewer must have missed the sleeping bag access zipper on the bottom of their bag.... which is actually very useful for access to the bottom of the bag... your sleeping bag or a jacket or what ever you put down there.
More nice features.... the side zipper pockets.
and... the handy mesh pocket on the back.... good for the damp jacket that needs to dry.... or anything else that needs a quick secure place to stash and still remain handy.
Over all... a pretty well thought out pack.
Nice for travel and trail.

Comments about Osprey Kestrel 48 Pack:
If you're new to backpacking or just looking for a all around sold pack, this may be the one for you. The Kestrel is a very comfortable pack even with 35+ pound loads. I've used it on two trips so far. A long four day trip, and a overnight out and back trip with plenty of positive things to say.
*PROS*
Top and bottom pack access.
There are a multitude of external pockets.
Straps and attachment points are abundant.
Built in rain cover.
Thick padding for comfort.
The pack is highly adjustable.
Stow-On-The-Go™ trekking pole attachment.
*CONS*
Little on the heavy side(all the bells & whistles).
Lid pocket is attached to pack.
Placement of the water reservoir pocket.
Once again...
If you're new to backpacking and looking for a pack that will allow you to have enough room for a weekend trip and pack down small enough for a overnighter this may be your pack.
If your an experienced backpacker and looking for a medium sized pack that can handle your heaver loads and still be comfortable, this may be your pack.
All that being said I did return it for a different Osprey pack.

Comments about Osprey Kestrel 48 Pack:
This is a great all around pack. It's way too big for a day pack though. I went to a very backwoods group of islands where the weight limit on the plane was 25 lbs and local transportation was via dugout canoe only. This pack was awesome for that. It held all of my clothes, toiletries, camera, binoculars, and two books for four days, plus my snorkeling gear (including fins)! No problem. It was comfortable to carry and small enough to be easy to manage on a tiny boat. It holds a 3L bladder easily, too. It has a couple of different compartments that allow you to keep wet stuff apart from dirty stuff and both of those apart from clean stuff!
The pack is so ridiculously adjustable that I actually had to tie the ends of straps up so that they weren't just hanging all over the place. On the bright side, once packed, it's easy to cinch the pack down a lot to make it smaller.
There is one draw back: it's top load only. It could be improved by adding a side zipper that would allow for access to stuff at the bottom of the pack without removing everything on top of it.

Comments about Osprey Kestrel 48 Pack:
The designers of this pack have thought of everything. It can swallow up a surprising amount of stuff, but can compress down nicely when carrying smaller loads. The fit is highly adjustable and super comfortable. The stow-and-go feature for hiking poles is sheer genius. There is even a whistle built into the clip for the sternum strap!

Comments about Osprey Kestrel 48 Pack:
This is a great all-in-one pack. Its best used for trips of 4 days or less. If you are a light packer you could make it a week if you aren't anywhere to serious.
Tree hit it right on the money with their review. Has loads of features. The hardest part about packing this pack is deciding where everything should go. So many pockets and options. One of the better features is you can cross the side straps across the front and pull the lid tight to compress the bag into a normal sized day pack. Two packs in one!!! Can't go wrong with this one.
