Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

My wife and I bought two of them for travel in East Africa. We camped about 2 weeks out of a 3 week trip. The bags zip together, which is good for a couple. We were warm enough even on chilly nights at 8000 ft (45 - 50 F). The bags are light and stuffed inside our backpacks, which was good since we were mostly on public transportation.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

I bought this because I needed an inexpensive sleeping bag that I thought would be suitable in mild weather (Spring and Summer in the Pacific Northwest). It was clear that this sleeping bag is not up to that task. It claims to be good down to 40 F, but my last outing I was wearing two layers of cloths in my sleeping bag and the temperature didn't drop much below 50, but I was still freezing in it at night. It felt like there was no insulation.

I also didn't like that there isn't a hood on this bag. There is a drawstring, but you have to really entrench yourself in the sleeping bag to get the top part over your head. Bottom line is that this bag isn't designed to keep you warm. It is best for warm summer night camping.

I am grateful that REI has such an awesome return policy. I brought this bag back and invested in The North Face 'Cat's Meow'. Hopefully it will do the trick.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

Purchased two bags, one long and one regular, for myself and my wife for car camping and backyard camping in a 3-season tent. Tested both bags over two nights during a period of unseasonably warm and dry weather, with official overnight temps of 63 F. at our location, actual temps probably not lower than 55 F. While initally comfortable in terms of roominess, the bags are so lightweight that they will not hold their position, even on a flocked mat. After turning over a few times one winds up wrapped in the bag like a sausage, at which point it becomes difficult to move arms or legs despite the generous dimensions of the bag. Most importantly, the bags simply didn't keep us warm, depite the mild ambient temperatures and even though I was wearing sweats and my wife was wearing flannel pajamas. It appears that without an additional liner or additional clothing, the bag simply doesn't live up to its +40 F. rating. We are disappointed and will be returning the bags.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

My BF and I bought two Allegheny bags for backpacking near Ojai, CA. Since then we've used them about 6 times on car camping trips as well. You MUST be realistic about the temp rating on this bag. It's designed to keep you alive in 40 degree weather, not comfortable in 40 degree weather.

It's super light and packs small for backpacking, which makes it perfect for our uses. We do have silk bag liners that we use if the temp is below 50 degrees at night, and I will sometimes bring a lightweight down throw blanket to stuff in there with me (I'm about 5'4" and only 110 lbs, so I get cold easily).

It's machine washable and dryable which makes it simple to care for. On super cold trips (we just got back from Joshua Tree where it was 20 degrees at night), we double it up with another sleeping bag, and our liners, and if you're wearing proper clothing you will be warm enough.

I do wish it had a hood, which would help keep in heat, but if you wear a hat to bed and pull the drawstring closed, it works sufficiently well. It is a great, light, roomy bag for those who can't sleep in a mummy bag. However, you are making some sacrifices in warmth and cushy comfort as the bag is fairly thin. Overall we're happy with our purchase, especially since we like the extra room and the bags are reasonably priced.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

I bought this bag after years of trying to deal with The North Face Cateye II mummy bag. The reality for me is, if I can't move my legs around at night, I can't sleep. I knew I'd be sacrificing some warmth moving to this design, but after just having returned from a two week trip, I'd say the decision payed off. The bag is light, compresses well and the zipper works without a hitch. I love the drawstring at the top. I pulled it nice and cozy-tight and was able to maintain a lot more warmth that way. I don't mind being bundled in at the top, so it didn't bother me. One July night in Yellowstone, the temp dropped to 33 degrees. That was actually my best night of sleep. If you are someone who absolutely can't deal with having your legs smooshed together like sardines, then I'd recommend this bag. If you're going to be in super cold conditions, then maybe another one might be right for you. I'd at least recommend a good liner.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

I have been using a 1984 vintage 20 degree North Face Cat's Meow, but I needed a smaller bag for kayak camping. This bag is so much smaller and lighter that I was skeptical it would be warm even in the 50 degree range. At 54 degrees it was quite warm just wearing a tshirt and shorts. I like the roominess of the rectangle bag over the semi-retantagle or mummy. At 5'8" I was able to sleep on my side and even pull my knees up. It easily pulls over over my shoulder to snuggle down. I'm sold.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

Both my boyfriend and I have this bag. It is my warm summer bag and only gets used when temps aren't going below 55. Anything below that and I have to layer up in long underwear and socks and sometimes my windshirt just to stay warm. I can save weight by bringing a warmer bag and sleeping in tank top and shorts comfortably through the night. My boyfriend had to layer up in long underwear and windshirt when it got to 45 and had a fitful night's sleep. I was surprised about that considering he requires less insulation than me to stay warm at the same temps! For the price the bag packs small and is great when the nighttime temps are mild, but don't count on it keeping your warm to the stated temperature without lots of layers or a liner. At which point, you are better off investing in a warmer bag and leave the extra layers and liner at home.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

Love the roominess & the lack of room it takes up in my pack, packs smaller then my 20* mummy bag and easily fits in the the sleeping bag section of my (Gregory Triconi) pack. Zipper, personal pocket, and drawcord at head area all work fine and are appreciated. The temp. rating may be a stretch for some, with a base layer and pad you may be comfy at 40* for me it's a 50* plus bag. I tried a liner and still wasn't very comfy below 50* and I'm a pretty warm sleeper. For me the bag is perfect for backpacking & car camping in the Mid-Atlantic 6 months out of the year.

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

This is a great bag for a lot of uses. It's lightweight and packs small enough for backpacking, but it's also roomy and can zip with another Allegheny to make a double bag.

My wife and I did a lot of searching and this is the lightest, smallest-packing square (non-mummy) bag out there. At 2.5 pounds, it's lighter than most backpacking bags. It's a 40 degree bag, so if you're planning on using it in colder weather, a liner works great, but for warm weather, I haven't found anything more comfortable.

We've had several other bags by Marmot and Kelty, but this one fits our needs perfectly. If you're looking for a great all-around bag and are realistic about what you're using it for, the North Face Allegheny is the best your money can buy!

Comments about The North Face Allegheny +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:

This is not a cold weather bag, by any means. I use this bag in the late spring and early fall. I sleep on my side and like the rectangular design. I have also used it in my Eno hammock and it works well there too. I am interested to see if I used a additional heat or sheet addition, if I could get 10-15 more degrees out of the bag. The bag packs small and would fit in most pack sleeping bag compartments. Be warned, this is not a bag that I would take on extended trip, where I would be unsure of extreme temperature shifts.
