Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Women's:
Unlike the other reviewers, I like these boots. Now, granted, I'm not out climbing the big volcanoes... however, I am out every week in these boots. I find they work well for hiking, scrambling, hiking in snow, steep snow. My feet have stayed warm, dry and comfortable even after a 12 hour day. There are comments about bad/loose ankle support. I don't agree. That sounds like a lacing problem (ie user error) rather than a flaw in the product. I have been able to lace these up so securely that I bruised my ankle! (user error!).

Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Women's:
I bought these boots for a late August summit climb on Mt Rainier. I'll start with my biggest complaint first and then talk about some other issues. No Ankle Support. I was traversing with crampons across a very steep section and my ankles gave out with every step. I'm young, fit, and have no prior ankle issues. The boots feel very secure, but it's impossible to get the ankle tight enough to provide stability and support. It's only fair to point out that I was wearing a 60-lb pack. With less pack weight and on less steep terrain, these boots might be okay.
The boots required little to no break in. After a 6-day climb (we climbed multiple glaciers on the mountain), I had no blisters on my toes or backs of my heels. I had very deep blisters on the soles of my feet despite wearing thick socks. However, I would expect blisters of some kind from any mountaineering boot after 6 days of hiking. The boots are very warm when dry, but even after sleeping with them in my sleeping bag at night, I could not keep them dry. My feet were cold the entire trip. Not life or limb-threatening cold, just 'annoying cold' and 'not wanting to stop cold'.
Overall, could work for summer mountaineering on non-technical gradual terrain.

Comments about Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boots - Women's:
I was hoping to use this boot to replace the La Sportiva boots I've been using for years. This boot was comfortable right out of the box - and is really warm. Delightfully warm! I've used it on trail and off trail, on rock and on snow. It does well scrambling - even though it doesn't have the best friction it does alright. It does well on snow and glaciers as well. Although anything technical from steep snow on it isn't that functional. The ankle is quite big and loose and does not provide adequate foot or ankle support, especially when crampons are being used. It looses its technical edge. So good approach shoe and good for moderate alpine terrain - but not a technical shoe.
