Comments about REI Micro Tote Bag:

This is ideal for last minute shopping items before a flight. Since it is "only" 1,000 cubic inches (vs. 1,800 for the typical "grocery" bag) it is not well suited for shopping, unless you really don't eat much.

On the other hand as an airport shopping bag, it's not so big you'll get "busted" by the "carry-on" police at the boarding gate, but it's certainly big enough for the typical paperback and other last minute junk we buy before a long flight, not to mention winter gloves or a hat or other small items that start to get too hot once we are actually in the airport. So for these purposes it's ideal

And unlike a plastic bag from an airport store, you won't be adding to the land-fill, and your fingers won't get cut by plastic "handles" that narrow down and pinch. And this tote will never, ever let you down with handles that start to stretch out of shape and then give way.

Compared to the recently discontinued Granite Gear "Air Grocery Sack," on which this seems to be modeled, the REI Micro Tote is made of regular, but thin, ripstop nylon with a standard water resistant urethane coating, vs. the Air Sack which was made of silnylon, which is impregnated nylon, very strong and thin, but also very crinkly and hence noisy. The Micro Tote is thankfully free of fabric noise. The Air Sack also used thin hand-grips instead of a wide shoulder strap as used on the REI Micro Tote, making the Micro Tote much more convenient, since it can be carried "hands free" (the Micro Tote even has a small, stitched in "anti-slip" pad on the shoulder strap). Although silnylon is slightly less bulky than riptstop, allowing Granite Gear to make a true grocery-bag bag that stuffed down as small, or slightly smaller, than this Micro Tote, the Micro Tote stuffs down to VERY small size too, thanks to the use of less material (smaller bag).

Please note that the black version (thank you, REI, for black) of the Micro Tote is good looking and opaque; the brighter colored versions are as garish as the old Air Sacks and similarly translucent, so that items inside might be identifiable from the outside. If you like colors, the blue and wasabi looked good in the store, but I chose black.

The self-stowing "pouch" sewn on the inside seam of the Micro Tote, near the top, has a cord-lock closure and would work well for keys.

Styling is a little to the distaff side of unisex.

Finally, there is no zipper or draw string closure for the bag, although to my eye, the online illustration makes it look like there might be. I think this is intelligent design, a closure would have added a lot of bulk and made it less attractive for daily carry in a regular backpack.

Ok, here's my intended use. I am taking the bus from Bangkok Thailand to Ban Phe, the jumping off point for Koh Samet. I am keeping my luggage for this side trip, at least, down to one rectangular backpack, sized like a school backpack. That's so I don't have to check my luggage under the bus and risk soiling, damage, and theft. The backpack will fit fine across my lap (overhead racks are VERY small) so I don't really have room for a second bag. This Micro Tote will come out at the bus station where it will get packed with a friendly array of local Thai snacks (dried squid, taro chips, candy) and bottled water to tide me through the 3.5 hour ride. Unlike the incredibly flimsy bags that each individual bus station snack vendor uses, none of which is large enough to hold the items from the other vendors, the Micro Tote will carry all my goodies, and after I throw away the trash at the end of the ride, will go back in my main bag. Then while I'm down there, I'll use the Micro Tote for carrying things I pick up while on sightseeing - from sunscreen to snacks, to laundry soap, to take-out.

A good bag is hard to find. This is a good bag.

Cons

  • Small Capacity

Comments about REI Micro Tote Bag:

Just big enough for wallet/IDs, water bottle, camera, phone, and other smaller necessities. I took it to India and Thailand and wore it shopping, traveling through airports, and tourist-ing (taking pictures). It fits snug to the body when worm across the body. The nylon fabric can be hot and lead to sweating in warmer climates, but I guess that is a weight tradeoff.

Comments about REI Micro Tote Bag:

Very thin material, wondering how it will hold up with heavier items. Got green, and it is translucent and very transparent-people will be able to read the title of the book you are carrying. It is NOT as structured as it appears in the photo, its quite flimsy and rounded, but i like how I can put it over my shoulders and across my chest so i'm hands free. i like the clip. if it were less expensive i'd get a whole bunch of them(it really is pricey for a stowaway bag of this size)
