      The chamois is not up to REI standards and is more like one found in shorts selling for around [$]. While it is not at all comfortable, at least it doesn't chafe. The outer shorts, like previous "rail" models are nice though they are a bit lighter. Still, they seem tough. Fit's good too. But so what, I don't want to wear them to ride in.

        These are my favorite shorts for mountain biking. I ride cross-country and find them perfect for rides of nearly any length. The pockets have plenty of space for any stuff you might want to have outside of a Camelback.

        Unlike the previous reviewer, I prefer less padding. I don't like the "wearing diapers" feeling that an over-padded short has. That doesn't mean these shorts have no padding, they have just the right amount of padding for me.

        My only complaint is the outside fabric has started to pill after almost two years of wear. I guess this isn't really a concern since they are still intact without any failures in the seams, wear areas like the seat, etc.

        I would buy them again and certainly plan to pick another pair when they go on sale.

          I love these shorts. I've used them for a full year now. I bought several trying for "more comfort", but then read alot on the chamois and read that they are there to prevent chafing, not for padding. These have more padding than about any of the others. They are extremely comfortable and I like the pockets. I ride on the road, but don't like the form fitting cycling shorts, these are snug, but give so you have full freedom of movement. I wish I could find these in non-cylcing shorts to wear over my other form-fitting cycling shorts. After a year, there's no noticable wear at all, and these things get washed about as soon as I'm done with a ride because I prefer them to all of my other shorts. I'm hoping that they'll go on sale soon so I can get more.

          These are really nice shorts, not much to complain about. I was hoping these would have a little more padding than my older spandex style shorts, but these are pretty much the same in that area. Actually, these are very much like those thin spandex shorts you see with but with a bit more modesty and pockets.
