Out of 3 shirts (T-shirt & tank top) this was the shirt I wore almost every day for a 3 week business/pleasure trip in July in the Veneto area of Italy. Even olive oil and tomato washed out easily, it dried very quickly and was comfortable. So far it's been mainly hand-washed and I see no signs of pilling. It's stylish enough that I didn't feel conspicuous among the Italians; however, at least in white, the "secret" pocket stands out like a lighthouse. I ended up cutting it out with my folding scissors. I also needed a size larger than usual. Now I also have the same shirt with long sleeves in purple!

This is a great all-around shirt, and I have it in the long sleeve version as well. I just washed it 30" ago and I'm now wearing it to a meeting. The only problem is that at least in white, it's semi-sheer and the "secret pocket" is NOT. In fact after several comments (What on earth is that?) while I was travelling I took my nail scissors and cut it out. Anything important is in my moneybelt. The long sleeve shirt is a dark color and it's not a problem then.

I have loved this shirt - purchased it 3 times since I discovered it several years ago. It looks great on me worn like a jacket, open with a colorful lightweight tank top underneath. But...the last time I purchased (2011) I was disappointed that it had been slightly redesigned. Now the sleeves are cut differently, shorter, and not so attractive on my 50+ yr old arms. I would buy more if REI would go back to the previous styling.

Took several of these shirts with me on a volunteer trip to Cambodia. It was extremely hot everyday and these shirts are easy to wash in the sink and dry completely overnight. I have a large chest so I have difficulty finding button shirts that look good on me with showing my bra between the buttons. These were a great fit and very light weight.

I wanted a nice looking button-down shirt to go hiking in, especially on days when we might stop somewhere on the way to or from the trail. This shirt fits the bill. Although it does fit well, the shirt's best features are what those around you won't notice -- the side and back vents, as well as the drying time. The vents are great and kept me cool in warm weather. And the shirt dries in no time flat. I was honestly amazed at how quickly it dried on yesterday's hike.
My only issue is with the fabric pilling. I've only worn this on one hike and the fabric is already pilling where my daypack's waist straps rubbed against the shirt. This certainly isn't a deal-breaker for me as I don't plan to wear it as a casual shirt. But after having read the other reviews before buying, I hadn't expected the pilling to start so quickly.

Took a chance & bought this shirt last year on sale in an icey pale rosey lilac. I'm a busty XL and I wear this shirt open over a tank, which was my intention. I could close it, but it's just a tad tight in the bust. I wear this shirt hiking, for walking in conservation land and just running around in the heat. It's feminine & nicely cut, a refreshing break from the usual shapeless men's shirts I wear for outdoor pursuits. Just love the side vents and the hidden, almost undetectable zip front pocket. I hope I like the extended collar on the new model, and I hope the rest of the shirt hasn't changed much because I am ordering two more - in darker colors & at full price. Wish they'd add insect repellency to this. After a year of *constant* hot, sweaty weather wear, there are a few minor pills, one pull, no smell and a few stains. But I don't baby this shirt when I wear it, and it is a pale color. I wash on delicate and hang it to dry, which it does in a snap. Haven't noticed any serious wrinkling, but it's an outdoor shirt so I wouldn't care about that anyhow.

[...] Being a fitness Pro for over 40 years has put me in a position to see the damage being caused by those manufactures who are choosing to alter their sizes for increased sales. I've had clients that think they are fine because they wear a size 8 but really it's a much bigger size. I was so sad when I put on my shirt. I have gotten several of these in the past. I wear a xs. I'm 110 pounds and am 5"3" so I'm small but not skinny. I understand that you are re sizing this shirt. As I stated above I am greatly disappointed that I can no longer wear this shirt due to your re sizing it to make people believe they are a smaller size. You should add sizes at the top of the scale not bring the current scale down. Maybe do a large 1,2 and 3 then go to X large. [...]. I am very very disappointed in your choice to change sizes for financial gain. You are "part of the problem" not part of the solution.

I am a pear-shaped 130 lb person who usually wears a medium or a small shirt- in this I had a LARGE and the shoulders are way too narrow. The short sleeves bind badly if I move my arms at all.
I really like the material and the cut otherwise and wanted very much to keep it. I can't understand why a company oriented toward active people would cut the sleeves so that they restrict arm movement. (The sleeve opening is not too small- the sleeves are just set in at the wrong angle.) Even with my narrow shoulders, I can't raise my arms forward to lift binoculars, much less out to the side.
I recommend it only to snake-shaped people.

I am usually a medium (sometimes a small), but to get wide enough shoulders, I had to get a large. I am pear shaped, so shoulder width was never a problem until a few years ago, when many companies started cutting shirts so that the sleeves bind as you raise your arms. This is better than most, but still catches and cuts the arm if I raise my arm so the upper arm is parallel to the ground. OK for walking around and bird-watching, not for climbing or tennis
Since it is a large, it is way too long- so much so that I will need to shorten it.
I am keeping it for style and really nice light material. Having tried other brands, many have the same problem with narrow shoulders.

I bought the Sahara shirt a couple years ago when a beautiful, deep red color called Cabaret. I've washed and worn the old shirt a gazillion times, never treating it gently, and it still looks like new! That old shirt was made of Supplex Nylon, which is soft and drapes beautifully. The new version of this shirt, I was disappointed to see, is Tactel nylon, which just doesn't have the drape and so screams "polyester", as does the dull and lifeless color Burnt Rose. I'm deciding whether to exchange for a different color and size (seems to run a size large), but none of the colors grab me, and I don't want to wait and see the Tactel nylon pill, as others have described, so will probably return it. That being said, it's still a great design. REI, please go back to Supplex, even if it has to cost a little more :)
