Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
i bought this pack to replace my north face recon that i've had for over three years. so it had some descent shoes to fill. this pack blows the north face out of the water. its the same capacity, but thought out more as a hiking pack. the main compartment is large enough to fit either all my school books, or climbing rope, or a descent size blanket/ sleeping bag depending on what the days plans are. the small pockets at the top are well thought out and placed appropriately. they're perfect to store all the little stuff, and to retrieve it quickly. my favorite feature though has to be the two overlapping pockets on the front. the larger one fits my climbing shoes perfectly. other than that there are plenty of loops and straps to tie on a chalk bag, beaners, or whatever. the waist strap pocket works great for a camera. and to add to the coolness of the pack already, its almost entirely made of recycled materials. it took me three weeks to decide on the perfect daypack and i'm possitive this is the one. in short, buy it.

One thing about this pack i love is the removable plastic support piece. Keep it in for more structure or remove it to make the pack more form fitting and lighter. I use this pack for cycling.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
This is a great, well designed and well made pack. The pockets are all in just the right spot and are of just the right size, and the pack is highly adjustable, making it disappear onto your back when loaded. The vented back and waistbelt pockets are great too. It's very well made, and I have no doubts that it will last a good long while. The lash-on and ice axe loops seem particularly well made, which is great. It will also hold a 3L water bladder, but beware that doing so will take up a substantial amount of space in the pack.
Perhaps the only negative is that it's smaller than it looks. It's perfect for day hiking and carrying the ten essentials, and I haven't yet had any issues with it not fitting what I needed for a day hike, but you're not likely to be able to get anymore than that out of it. Additionally, adding a water bladder to it seems to take up more space than one would expect in such a pack. The main pocket, with water bladder, will hold a shell, food, SLR camera, and light fleece/sweater, but not much more.
The excellent design of the external pockets helps to alleviate the size issue--I can fit all of the ten essentials except rain gear in the outer pockets without even touching the main pocket. Just be aware that this is strictly a day pack, not a dual-purpose day pack/light overnight pack.
Bottom line--great pack, I use it often, love it, and recommend it, just know beforehand that it's not a cavernous, bottomless pack that could double duty as a light overnight pack.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
Great little pack, just very clear that it was tested on men only. Sternum strap hits straight across your chest if you are a female, very uncomfortable and the design prohibits sliding the sternum strap to a higher, more comfortable spot. Strange that it was designed this way, most packs allow you to slide the strap wherever. Also the shoulder straps need to be cut to fit females (ie, curved to widen out across the chest area). The way the shoulder straps are placed also leaves a big gap at the top of the shoulders - all in all, designed for someone with no bustline and big shoulders (ie, men). I've got a small frame and am not big busted (34 B) but this clearly is not going to work. A shame, because it's otherwise a great pack at a great price. I'm returning it for this reason only. REI - design a women's specific version please!

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
I bought this pack for a vacation out west. All of my packs are for multi-day excursions and I was in need of a day pack. When I got this pack I was impressed with the multi-pockets that are hard to see on REI's web site. This pack perfomed flawlessly. I was able to pack rain gear for my wife and kids plus snaks for our day excursions. Plenty of room and good organization compartments. Only complaint is it needs a fully adjustable lumbar strap. Would definitely buy again. Thanks REI!

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
Being a nature writer and avid fly fisher, I spend a lot of time outdoors and on the trails. I own a lot of daypacks, but the REI Traverse 30 is by far the most comfortable, easily accessible pack with room for all my gear, which includes an slr digital camera.
This is a tough, smartly-designed pack at a good price.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
Very comfortable and great ventilation on the hot days. I had the pack on about 8 hours each day and my shoulders weren´t sore at all. The seam for my water resevoir hose seemed to be coming apart a bit.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
I just recently purchased this so I can hike with my dog and carry enough gear and water for both of us to get through the day. In an effort to build up my endurance for longer trips, I carry more weight than I probably need.
On my first trip out with this pack, I twisted my back while getting ready to hit the trail and really thought I would have to skip the hike. This pack carried the weight and the pain in my back wasn't a factor at all. The weight was well distributed and both my dog and I had plenty of food, water and gear to handle a very long day hike. This was well worth the money and the fact that it is eco friendly is a great bonus.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:
Perfect sized pack for a long day hike. Big enough for enough gear for poor weather day; and it also compacts nicely when less gear is needed.
