by oldavefromPoor quality Great design, comfortable, lots of pockets and carries well. Only problem is the seams blowing out. Only had it a short time, maybe three trips, 2 to the woods and one on a plane and the lower seams on the shoulder straps came unraveled. Love the pack but need to return it for a different/better made pack. Folks @ REI were very sympathetic & helpful. Date published: 2010-07-01

by AngusGTfromPoor design The pack's layout does not allow for efficient packing. The hip belt does not stay tight, nor does it transfer the load to the hips. This forces all the weight to your shoulder, and the shoulder pads are poorly designed. I spent 3 days (and 15 miles) trying to get this to fit properly and couldn't do it. As soon as I unpack it'll be going back to REI. Is sad because usually their stuff is pretty good. Date published: 2010-08-15

by discofromnot thrilled i have been travelling around the world for 8 yr straight and this was possibly the worst pack i have traveled with i am under 12 kilos all the time and the sholder straps started to tear just 8 months into travel on 3 months of hard trail use rest was central america have since switched to a rock snake black momba 28 which holds everything weighs in under a kilo as opposed to almost two the lookout is fine if you do a few hikes a year but as an ultra lighter and full time traveller it is poor at best Date published: 2010-04-30

by drkramfromGood idea, but weak in vital places Reasons why I like it:
- I have never run out of room
- Comfortable
- Plenty of pockets
- Good price
- Awesome rain cover
Reasons why I am returning it:
- The shoulder strap stitching has come undone on both shoulders. The shoulder straps are engineered to carry heavy loads (reinforcing webbing etc), but they seem to be very weak at the slightly different load bearing points when you pick your pack up off the ground by a single shoulder strap. I suppose this could be avoided by lifting the pack to shoulder height first by the handle on top of the pack.
- The net-like mesh that lines the shoulder straps and the back wear very quickly, especially if you have any exposed velcro on your coat that it may cling to. I have used this pack everyday for about 6 months and the mesh is very frayed.
- The pack will not stand up on its own. It requires a good 30 degree lean to keep it from toppling over. It is actually quite frustrating.
Overall I thought it was a good try, but has some vital adjustments to be made. Date published: 2010-05-27

by L0gfromComfortable, but those seams! I was excited to pick up this bag, so much so that on a quick weekend trip to the in-law's in DC I made a point of heading to the REI. After only a month of use (weekend day hikes, weekday commutes with a book, laptop, couple files) the seams started popping on the L shoulder strap. Not cool. Now I'll have to wait for another trip to return the bag[...] A good idea, the size/materials/etc., but ultimately not a wise construction. Even on sale, I'd say "Keep looking." by karlfromDisappointed and returning it I bought last year's model on sale and have been generally been disappointed. But... it depends on what you're looking for.
On the positive side, this pack holds a lot of gear. It can definitely be used for overnight or even weekend trips. There are straps to easily hold a sleeping pad and you can even fit a bag inside. Also, the pack is of very good quality, highly durable, as expected from REI.
On the negative side, I have a few complaints. First, it is just not that comfortable, possibly due to the bulk. Second, it is pretty hot w/ minimal air flow around the back. Also, it is very difficult to reach your water bottles without taking off the entire pack. Finally (and this may be unique to my bag/body/etc.), the straps constantly make an annoying noise while hiking, no matter how they are adjusted.
Bottom line is that I am going to exchange it for another model. Date published: 2009-09-14

by Jackpine JimfromThis pack doesn't stand up The BIG flaw is that it doesn't stand up when you set it on the ground. I like the size and adjustability of this backpack and the number and layout of the zipper pockets is nice but, given the 'cut'of the pack, the top zipper pocket could be much bigger without impacting the capacity of the main compartment. Probably return it and find one that stands up when you set it down. Date published: 2010-08-15

by xcguy6fromWhy I didn't buy it When I saw this in REI today I thought, this is it. It had everything I was looking for in a day trip backpack: sufficient storage, a bunch of separate pockets, two water bottle holders (I'm not a hydration pack person). Some little straps on the left hip belt that I could hang my camera case off of. Then I put it on. I had my tried and trusted Madden pack with me for comparison.
No one on this forum has mentioned this and the guy at the store said no one complained but the first thing I felt was the very bottom of that plastic back insert digging into the bottom of my back.
It ends just past the padded area and basically dug itself into that area, pushing on the seam down there to boot. We tried everything to adjust the pack so the weight wasn't transferred directly to that point, to no avail.
Sorry, REI, a pack has to feel comfortable in the store. Has no one else noticed this? I really wanted to buy it but didn't. Date published: 2010-09-12
